Producing a HUGE pepper plant has been a dream of mine for years. I am a Cane Smith by trade and have had a Pepper Plantation (in the 90s) I use all kinds of materials to develop one-off designs. I want to make a cane from a Pepper plant stem. THAT is why I'm overwintering some plants. Once I get that huge trunk base I hope to prune down to a single straight chute and develop it into my masterpiece

I love this and I really love the lessons learned segment at the end. Always striving to learn more each year. Maximum yield per plant should be everyone's white whale. As I mentioned to Calvin on one of his videos, bigger is better obviously, but form factor is more important. I've tested up to 202 gallon with capsicum. The wider/shallower container is better than a taller/thinner container shape due to capsicum's natural root structure habit.
@TheDuckofDoom. Жыл бұрын
Wash the plant with a blast of water about twice per month, it will knock off a large number of aphids and the sugar excretion. For better control you could spray an incecticidal soap a few days prior to washing. If you have very hard water I would recomend a final rinse with rain water (And using rain water to mix the soap, Ca and Mg tend to bind it into soap scum).

2,000 pods is one solid goal to strive for Shaun! What could happen if a second 90l pot were started at the same time, with the added benefit of sliding the second pot outside once the weather breaks towards summer? Try keeping nutrients and water the same. Just curious of how such a comparison may work now that you have a couple very nice greenhouses. Stay Spicy! -Bob...

For the 160L pot I wonder if it's worth using an overwintered plant rather than a seedling. Hopefully the root system can fill the container earlier in the season then focus on producing a bumper yield.

Another good video shaun. I have brought nearly all of my last unripened chilli plants into the house now, as you suggested, but the aphids have followed. I know what you mean by sticky leaves......little buggers...........probs because the leaves are wilting often now and the plant is weak as I am not feeding them. I have noticed that some species of chilli, especially my still green jamaican rosso have definitley turned yellow with red tinges since I picked some of them from the plant and am storing them in a kitchen window. Is picking the unripened fruit from the plant a known option to ripen them? If so I will just do this straight away next season instead of waiting for them to turn red in the greenhouse. Just wondering how this affects heat and flavour though. I guess I will find out!
@ChilliChump2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Leigh! I would try ripen then on the plant as much as you can. There is a definite drop in flavour, heat and definitely sweetness.

Aphid problem - solution ; a clove or 2 of garlic grown with the chillies may help , or , take a Combe of Garlic , cop it up , putting it into a sterile jar with boiling water over it , allow to cool , stain the milky liquid into another sterile jar , for storage , or into a sprayer unit , and spray the plants , this will make the plants unpalatable to the aphids . Hope the suggestions help with minimizing aphid damage .

@FC-cz6zd2 жыл бұрын
Quick question. You've convinced me to try a 25 gallon (close to 90L) potted plant this season. What size potted up plant would you suggest? Since I usually plant my 3-4" potted up plants into their final 10 gallon pots, would you go larger on the potted up size going into a 25 gallon pot? I'm not sure why, but in the past I've found that trying to plant a small plant into a much larger pot doesn't work very well. Thanks for your time and great videos!
@ChilliChump2 жыл бұрын
You would need pot up to a 9l or 10l pot before going to the 90l. I go with a rule of thumb, of 10 to 1 ratio for potting up

I bought the buffalo extreme and the sting, I like both but the sting is a little more vinegary than my preference and I was thinking that both of them would be hotter, so what do you have hotter than these two hot sauces? And any with less vinegar or none at all? They don’t have to have the vinegar if they are fermented do they?
@ChilliChump2 жыл бұрын
The Sting is my version of the Scorpion Tabasco, so needs the vinegar for the style of sauce it is. And my blazing buffalo is a Louisiana style sauce (like Frank's, Crystal etc), so again is going to need vinegar for the style of it. The heat level of those two aren't ridiculously hot...but should be hotter than the examples I gave. I have a few more superhot sauces coming out in the next 2 months. Problem is, I do those in smaller batches, and they'll out ridiculously quickly! My Pain in the Bhut sauce just recently sold out. My Weapons Grade sold out without 3 days of putting it in my store. Make sure you are signed up to my newsletter to get alerted when I have new stock ready..

So this plant achieved its size in just a single season including germination? That's insane, my chocolate bhutlah DM plant that reached 6.1 took a whole two seasons to get that big but didn't have any where near the girth that your plant achieved. Now I didn't bring any of my plants indoors to save during the winter time this time around but I did pull many of my plants out of thier 5 gallon containers and buried thier base Underground with a little bit of plant food pellets in the soil to see if it keeps the plants alive during the winter. Just an experiment, I thought if maybe I can prevent the roots from freezing and dying that maybe the plant will spring back to life next spring. It doesn't get too cold here in Georgia in the US so I want to see if this technique would keep the plant alive so maybe I'll have some productive plants far sooner and maybe manipulate some of them into growing bigger before they flower and fruit.
@ChilliChump2 жыл бұрын
yeah, one season. That was the challenge really! This could be a beast if I decided to overwinter for a couple of years. But that brings about its own challenges! If you can keep the roots from freezing, then you should be ok....just make sure they aren't getting overwatered, that is a common issue when overwintering.

Hi Shaun, great video! I tried to get Dorset Naga seeds but they were sold out everywhere, I did find som Naga in a supermarket and have planted some of those seeds. The chili was bloody spicy and looked the same as yours so I guess they were real Naga. Are there any major differences between Dorset Naga and normal Naga in regards of taste, spicyness, plantsize etc? Your plant was huge but with a bit less fruit than wanted, a lot of leafmass though... do you think that you might have been a bit too generous with the nitrogen in the end of the season? Maybe a bit less N and bump up the P and K? Just a guess from a happy amateur. :-)

Don't take this as criticism, but in every clip and photo, the largest plants were begging for water. Not sure if you just needed to water them more or more frequently...but throughout the whole video your big plants had sagging, very sad leaves. I'd say they were at a 1.5-2/10 moisture level. Water starved plants won't grow or produce an abundance of pods.
