Tornado Caught on Camera Hitting Homes in Pleasant Hill, Iowa - near Des Moines, IA! A GoPro was set up just before the family took shelter and this is what it recorded - Some very intense video
The "Main" Tornado that was rated an EF-4 passed just in front of their house (seen in the video), however, that strong vortex that hits the house is likely what we call a satellite tornado...

That is our local post office but we live closer to the town of Pleasant Hil", "Neither city has a claim to our area, roads are managed by our county and not by a town or city", "It is very confusing to anyone NOT from this area", We are Near Pleasant Hill or Southeast Corner of Polk County"
So we went with the "more accurate location".

@@voiceofreason7567 It depends where the main vortex is and if the tornado itself was a multiple vortex. If this house was just on the outside of the tornadic circulation than it's entirely possible for the house and truck to be relatively unscathed.

0:12 Right before the tornado hits you can see the rain/hail shaft move from left to right across the screen. That is the precipitation that is wrapping around the tornado. That is why it doesn't look like a tornado, but a wall of precipitation. That's the danger of rain wrapped tornadoes. To the Middle-right of the screen is where the core of the storm is. That's where you would be having your hail/torrential rain. 0:25-0:40 you can hear the sound of the hail, and also see some hail falling on the ground. Hail is mostly small, around the size of dimes and pennies. 0:45-0:50 wind suddenly changes direction from left to right and then right to left as the inflow to the tornado changes direction because of the tornado's motion from Southeast to Northeast. That is the inflow wind that is now coming in. The initial wind was the outer winds of the tornado that are wrapping around, but the shift is the winds that are flowing into the tornado. From 0:50 are in the tornado, and are not dealing with the RFD anymore. Tornado itself makes it's closest approach between 1:10 and 1:20. Tornado makes it's closest approach at 1:30 as one of the tornado's outer vortexes strike the house. You can actually see the mesovortex just before it slams into the house between 1:31 and 1:33. Basically a satellite tornado. 1:40-2:10 RFD winds 2:20-3:30 it Starts pouring and hailing from precipitation wrapping in on the backside of the storm from the core to the Northwest. Even through all the rain and hail you can see clearing skies from 2:55. The most intense hail falls from 3:40-4:00

Saw the owner on one of the Weather Channel videos that comes with your phones "weather". Guy's name is Curtis Cunningham from Runnells IA. Damage they showed was partial missing roof and busted windows. Nowhere near EF4 damage ! The NWS tornado track of the EF4 tornado has it well north of Runnells.

We just feel/hear a jolt, or rolling (like on water), and hope it doesn't keep going. The big ones roar immediately and it isn't subtle! Trying to run while the earth shakes is difficult. But at least they don't chase us and we don't have very many.

It's not a satellite tornado, it was a suction vortex that's part of the main tornado circulation and yes they do sometimes stray from the main circulation, but they are notorious for being much more violent and destructive than the main funnel is, given they can and sometimes do have have faster wind speeds than the parent funnel does. In many cases of the larger and more violent tornadoes that are of EF4 to EF5, most of them are multiple vortex tornadoes and the suction vortices are often the culprits for destroying a house and leaving nothing, but bare foundations.

This might be one of the best videos ever filmed of a satellite tornado. I think this house just missed getting hit by the main tornado, but did get hit by a small satellite tornado. It definitely sounds like the house lost a window. I hope that any other damage was minimal, besides for that window. Most importantly I hope that no was injured here.

Came here to say effectively the same thing. You see the satellite in the field and maybe 1 second later it hits. They definitely got skirted by the larger EF-4, and that sound is just ridiculous. I've heard the roar from a lot of tornadoes in my 20yrs chasing, and this one is as classic as it gets. You don't hear that kind of deep, low roar on weaker tornadoes. Additionally, the RFD cuts in around the 3:50ish mark then the sky clears.

Luckily this was only at an EF-2 intensity when it hit this home. It was doing EF-4 damage in Winterset just a few miles away. And they were hit with a sub-vortex or satellite tornado rather than getting the full brunt of the main base. Great footage and I'm glad it sounds like everyone in this home was okay.

@@ext93 Bigger tornadoes sometimes create their own weather systems sometimes and can create smaller tornadoes, or satellite tornadoes, in the area around them. The thing that hit the house wasn’t the main tornado, because if it was, the cam would be long gone as would the truck and building itself. What hi5 this house and cam was the satellite tornado spinning around the main one. Look very closely at the field across from the cam from 1:27 to the point of glass breaking and and you’ll see a small spinning vortex come flying at the camera.

That is a good question. I was born and raised in Kansas. Bad as the tornadoes are, they often cut a path 1/4 mile or less. I never have been hit, but my family was 3 times. Seems like people forget and get complacent if they are spared during these storms. When we have a really bad one, sometimes there is a push for storm shelters etc.. but then it wanes later, as the years pass.

In Texas, we dont have any, at least in the area im in, because it has to do with something called the “Frost Line” and because of how the soil is. We have a lot of clay soil and in the winter it expands and in the summer it shrinks so that could cause cracks and lots of needed repairs constantly. Basements are also super expensive in general.

I wish we could measure how fast that was moving at the 1:33 mark. That was at least 70 MPH if not more. You can see where it was stalling in the field and then it gets a huge push from the back and just picks up and insane amount of momentum! Just look at it!

@@Rick-rb3nk Officially, the Pleasant Hill, Iowa tornado was rated an EF-4 ... but I don't think this house was hit head on by the main rotation. It's possible the rotation seen coming at the left of the camera (and breaking the glass) was either a subvortex or possibly a satellite of the main tornado.

In the past 3 weeks. Of the 19 tornados that touched down in Texas 10 of the warnings/sirens only happened 3 minutes after touchdown. Few days ago when we had 30 tornados touch down several states didn’t even give a warning even after touchdown because they simply weren’t used to a tornado forming (ie: Florida panhandle which resulted in the death of 2 individuals). There is definitely some issues going on with tornado detection and warning indication. When observing these tornados I’m looking at 3-4 different softwares and they all line up with the warning delay. I hope some research/ study can get to the bottom of this issues as this is unusual to some degree.

The few seconds of calm as the eye passed over was incredible. Once the rear of the tornado then passed by, it was even more violent. It's the backside of a Nader that's most destructive since it has the RFD following it. Also, the tornado you see at any time, not just this vid, is FAR wider around than it looks like. That surrounding area is called The Lions Den for a reason. Many storm chasers have misinterpreted that 'invisible' area and find themselves in highly potential severe danger.

There is a chance they were already going off but you didn't notice until windows were broken and the tornado noise died down. That is why it is preached that sirens are not for people who are inside but instead for those who are outdoors away from any kind of media source. Weather radios and emergency alerts on cell phones are much more reliable.

People need to stop waiting on government and emergency management to tell them they're in danger. Paying attention to the weather when it starts to get crappy, is worth more than all the tornado warnings and sirens and cell phone messages in the world. You KNOW you're doing it right... when you are already in your shelter, or at least are getting ready to go, BEFORE the warnings are issued. We call this 'staying ahead of the storm' and it's ALWAYS going to be a superior strategy, to waiting on NWS and Emergency Management to issue a warning.

This is an amazing video of a tornado, some of the best I have ever seen. I have to say, it was fascinating watching it roll in, and seeing the satellite directly hit you. It was interesting how at around 1:24 , the wind suddenly calms down a lot and the trees (nearest to the camera) appear as if they are barely moving, despite the fact that you were (very obviously) still within the outer circulation of the tornado, where the wind should be really blowing strong still. Notice how it picks back up after the votext hits the house, as by that point the suction winds from the tornado and the vortex become evident as it pulls away. Also interesting to see the RFD following the tornado transition to the hail core as the tornado and mesocyclone pulls away, seemingly as a added "bonus" of sorts to what you already captured. Since I mention the RFD, it is also cool to note the quick transition to a rain-rapped tornado before it hits the house, as you can see the rain shafts quickly cover it up.

Was it a satellite, or a subvortex inside a multiple-vortex tornado? Some of the other video of this storm leads me to believe it might be the latter. SUPER DOPE VIDEO… The speed in which it slammed into the house plus the windspeed of it’s own circulation…😳😳😳

1:31 there’s either a subvortex in the main circulation or a satellite that directly impacts the house. I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a clear cut example of a subvortex coming straight for the camera like that…

Wow, you can really tell it's going counterclockwise; at the very end after it's passed off to the right the camera gets pounded by the back wall wind looping around, followed by the trailing edge with a dollap of hailstones. I'm sure that was an awful mess to clean up, and you lost some stuff, but I'm glad your house only got clipped instead of taking the brunt of it.

Great video and audio! The extreme darkening of the sky in front of the camera shows the direction of the EF4. Of course this wasn't a direct hit but the size of the tornadic wind field was impressive enough to cause damage this far away.

Could have been an EF-4 tornado at some point but there is clearly no EF-4 damage visible at this location. EF-0 to EF-1 here

This home had part of its roof taken off. Town of Runnells IA. According to the NWS tornado track of the long duration tornado was well north of Runnells unless this neighborhood was north of town and got EF1 winds as it moved past. I saw the owner on the weather channel video. They got side swiped Damage of the house is busted windows and part of the roof gone. Nowhere near a direct hit by EF 4. House would have been flattened. Pick up on driveway didn't even budge . What ever passed was off to the left of them. They got lucky.

Actually, it wasn't near Runnells - TWC, and many others "kinda" got it wrong, hence the position of what you're talking about is off We talked with the family who filmed this video prior to posting and they said the following - "We are in, what is called, an unincorporated area. Our mailing address is Runnells. That is our local post office but we live closer to the town of Pleasant Hil", "Neither city has a claim to our area, roads are managed by our county and not by a town or city", "It is very confusing to anyone NOT from this area", We are Near Pleasant Hill or Southeast Corner of Polk County" That said, we went with the "more accurate location". Furthermore, instead of what you're saying and being south of the track, this put them closer to the track and our information stands correct! You are more than welcome to check the official info here: www.weather.gov/dmx/March5th2022Tornadoes, but that tornado was an EF4, they just didn't take a direct hit however just passed them... ​@@LiveStormChasers I'm not disputing the was an EF4 tornado that day. I was just saying the damage they sustained was EF1 wind levels as it passed them. They were lucky. One can only do as well with given information at the time and Google maps without definitive GPS coordinates. We have all sorts of unincorporated little towns in rural Wisconsin as well. I had relatives with farms just had a Hwy route # for an address. I wish them well. Iowa has had some pretty bad storms already for 2023. 🙏🤗

Its a cold hearted tornado that tears a roof off , breaks te windows then rains and dumps hail inside their home. 15 min before everything was normal. You never stop feeling for all those affected.

I was a storm chaser for 20 years and I have NEVER been able to figure out why people drive into massive tornadoes. Like in this video u see headlights. If you are driving and you see trees coming down and houses come apart STOP FRIGGING DRIVING.

holy crap they got lucky. That tornado had some serious power. The house got hit by a satellite or multi vortex. you could see it slam into the house right when the glass broke. that loud roar as it moves in is menacing to say the least. You guys were very fortunate it wasn't a direct hit as I would guess there would have been nothing left...
