I worked around that truck in the late 90’s at the Williams oil refinery in Memphis Tennessee. Barnhart used it to pull Goldhofer trailers around to move giant towers and such on site. Watched it and another prime mover tied together pull a 250’ separation tower off of a barge on the Mississippi. If I remember right they tore both trucks up in the process. They used to call that Truck Big John

Hey, did you ever work with a fella named Byron that you can remember? Tall fella, mustached, had a bit of a limp from shattering his foot escaping a house fire. My dad also worked at the refinery from 91 to roughly 2010, and i'm watching this truck wondering if he mightve seen this same one many years ago.

What a cool truck. I figure with planetaries you don't need a bigger driveline than that. The diff gears it down and then the wheel ends gear it down even more. This monster must put insane torque to the ground.

I picked this truck up at a transmission shop in CT and took it to Memphis about 17 years ago. Driving it onto the trailer was different. In 1st gear you almost couldn't tell you were moving. The whole trip it was quite the conversation piece.

Awesome truck. I love those Pacifics and Hayes. It probably had 12’ wide log bunks on it, early in its life. If I remember correctly those would be 90,000 or 110,000 Clark rear axles. Triple frame. All the good things in life.

That's good solid design, engineering and construction in that 6X6 tractor. Pacific made excellent tractors back in the day. My favorite was the Pacific P-16 with Cat V12 D3412 diesel engine. In this tractor, all of the axles look to be Clark, unless I'm wrong. The Cummins K19 is a very good, proven engine. Cummins makes one which may fit under the hood, but would be slight overkill, it's the Cummins QSK23, a 23 liter displacement, and bigger brother of the QSK19, with a bigger block than the K19 and weighs on or around 7,000 pounds, dry weight, if I'm correct. I do not know if the QSK23 is emissions rated for a tractor like this, but is used in/offered for marine and standby power applications.

Pacific had International cab parts, doors and interior accessories assemble in house, but there have been some where cabs work full International Hayes was the one who's cab inspiration was of Kenworth styling aesthetics but also custom built in house.The cab you see here would be similar to the conventional 4300 Transtar of that era. K-1150’s were a better engine than 1693’s from an objective standpoint….6 individual cylinder heads meant easier service, they actually had a compression brake available from jacobs (Never, ever did they make a Jake for a 1693 and there has never been one with Jake’s, although some misguided cat fanboy old-timers will say different), and a lot of their design was similar enough to the 855 a guy that knew his way around an 855 could work on them. The 1693 on the other hand had one single cylinder head and was a very early OHC design, only using the cams to run the valves because they still used a fully pressurized injection pump and simple poppet injectors unlike Cummins or Detroit who had figured out a camshaft actuated unit injector was better in most ways. Also the injection setup is why Jake’s were originally only available on Cummins and GM / Detroit engines.
@thesteelcowboy1621 Жыл бұрын
@J.R. In WV great info bud. 1693 were a big motor but very very expensive and harder to work on than a 855 or 1150 kt. Kts are expensive as well but back then they were even expensive. Thank you for your input! Great stuff!

I believe you must have Hayes and Pacific trucks mixed up…That’s is absolutely not a Paccar cab. Look at the door handle. The shape of the roof and that big drip rail…it’s an International Paystar / Transtar Conventional cab with a few minor modifications. I drive one every day, it’s fairly easy to spot. It would have been a nearly brand new design in 74’, there are actually quite a few later Pacific trucks with this cab. Now Hayes trucks did use cabs from KW, another company with a factory in Canada that could supply them with cabs.
