Look at the actress who was called "not black enough to play this role" by many "fans" that yelled whitewashing/palewashing over this saying she Identified with Clawdeen well before that role because "she looked like her which wasn't very common back then". Seriously. G3 brought out the worst of the fandom, and I am still very much ashamed by it as someone deep in said fandom. I also always thought she looked like me and I am mixed, too. When I created my MH-Sona I specifically color-picked Clawdeen's skin color for my OC. I saw her as mixed, too. If you saw her as fully black and Identified with her because of it, that is awesome! But like don't say the people in charge of the movie/casting are racist because they whitewashed a character just because you believed she was black-black. Don't tell a mixed person that they aren't "black" (or white) enough to play a certain role. Because that in itself is just racist. People like us really struggled to be accepted by either side for a long time, you know. Still do sometimes. You are allowed to hate something. You are allowed to hate G3. But don't make it about something it just isn't about just to justify your hate. Sorry for my rant. Thank you for sharing this

I think the frustration comes in when you see how the film industry, and the animation industry, is constantly lightening up characters that were previously darker skinned. Clawdeen was one of those characters. And I don’t think it’s fair to say peoples feelings aren’t valid in being frustrated with that after it happens time and time again. Brownskin and darkskin girls already have the such a small amount of representation and it is frustrating to constantly be erased by their lighter skinned counterparts. Now, that being said, this isn’t Miia’s fault and it’s sad she was the one getting attacked for it. All she’s doing is playing the role given to her and I’m proud of her for getting the role and happy she could identify with Clawdeen. But again, I don’t think it’s fair to invalidate how people are feeling about this. It also has nothing to do with her “not being black enough”. I know people have said that, but it’s not right to invalidate her blackness. It’s honestly just frustration with the pattern of brownskin and darkskin erasure.

@@penne4107 Clawdeen was not one of those characters, though. As I said, I identified with her, because I think she looked like me. I am not black-black I am mixed. I am not the only mixed person that saw her as mixed too. And it is not invalid to see her as either, but it becomes a problem when you claim she was one over the other. Clawdeen is a werewolf. She pretty much has that color, because fur does not come in "white skin color" She was voiced by a white woman mimicking a black accent (which in other cases is seen as appropriation, too), that, could've come from a mixed person growing up in a black community as well. There was NOTHING that told us she was black-black or mixed before. Her sister Howleen had lighter skin as well. Because mixed kids can actually have a range of color depths to them. They can come in you wouldn't even see they have a white parent from wait, they have a black parent? And just by looking at Howleen next to Clawd and Clawdeen, it actually speaks more for them being actually mixed than black-black. Speaking of the industry whitewashing or light washing characters...you are aware that, at the moment, they do the opposite, yes? We got a black Ariel, which, I am not hating on, I love it! But look at the new Scooby-doo cast as another example. Black Hermione? Black is in right now, and a lot of old characters are recast as Black, which is absolutely fine in my books if we aren't talking historical figures. If it doesn't matter to the plot and story what ethnicity a character has. And I also think it is weird to cry about Clawdeen when we also got black Bloodgood in the same movie. Like how the fuck can we be calling the people behind that movie racist for supposedly "lightwasing" Clawdeen (which again, I don't think they did, In her case it is REALLY just a matter of perspective. As I said, mixed people identify with her just as much as black people) when they turn Bloodgood into a black women in the same vein? That is called cherry picking and creating issues where there are none. ALSO ALSO, I think as a mixed person myself, saying someone isn't "black enough" to do whatever is incredibly racist in itself. I have had to deal with this kind of stuff a lot growing up. It wasn't fun, I can tell you that much. Mixed People are a part of black culture, too. And arguments like that are just denying us half of our heritage because we....have a white parent? I thought we were way past that being scandalous and an issue? We still face god damn racism and from both sides at times as well. So yeah. Yes erasure is bad, whitewasing is BAD...IF IT HAPPENS. But in this case, as I said, it just didn't happen. And as I previously said we are actually having a lot of black representation at the moment, ever so growing.. (and to the collateral damage of Ginger representation in a lot of the cases, by the way)... So yeah, I kindly disagree.

@@JinsanSama Well, firstly, I already said that I wasn’t saying she’s not black enough, it’s not about that at all. Please don’t twist my words. It’s about the lack of representation for a group that is constantly being degraded and put down in the media. And for once girls with brown and dark skin had a character that looked like them, yet was popular, desirable, funny, cool. They don’t get characters like that. So I think to downplay the importance of seeing that on the screen down to “well she had to be that color” is invalidating. People have an attachment to her character for that reason, so no saying that “well they have bloodgood” isn’t going to fix that. There was no attachment to bloodgood. In that same realm, you can’t really compare The Little Mermaid to this situation because they’re not the same. White people (and light skin in general) has always been praised in media. And there’s many, many characters that look like them. The same cannot be said about brown and darkskin people. So the small percent of characters who they have that do represent them are special, so again, I don’t think it’s fair for you or anyone else to invalidate how they’re feeling. Especially after this happens time and time again. This is a form of “whitewashing” a character. We can agree to disagree, but I’m not budging on that stance and I know many other people agree with that as well. You’re still allowed to like this interpretation and identify with it, I’m not here to tell you that you can’t.

TBH I really hated the movie. IDC if it's a reboot and that means that it does not have to go with the previous show but the was AWFUL and TRASH. NO CHARACTER development whatsoever. The storyline was BORING. Since when was clawdeen HALF HUMAN. Since when was Draculaura so rude and anti-social she had so much energy but no they basically made her emo. Also, when did she want to practice witchcraft? ALSO since when was Frankie so annoying and smart she was literally so dumb and how is she smart enough to know what pronouns are but not a HIGH FIVE. Since when we Cleo and laguna BEST FRIENDS. Since when did the zombie girl talk she never did but why did they make her. Since when was Cleo mean to them like they were friends and everything but sometime Cleo would be mean. IDC but clawdeen does not wear glasses. Since when was Duce and Cleo not a thing they loved each other but did get in some fights but would get over it. Since when was laguna PINK. Also, when was laguna able to have paruna-like teeth that just made her ugly and unlikable. Since when did clawdeen like duce like that's not it. THIS IS MY OPINION DO COME AFTER ME IDC.

@@isabelladimas5472 Well the Were in Werewolf actually is old english/german for (Hu)Man. Werewolf means (Hu)Manwolf. Werewolfs are half human by definition, so that she wasn't up until G3 imo was a major flaw that they finally fixed. Clawdeen had desigsn where she DID wear glasses in G1 too. Just putting that out there. And hating on a character for having to wear glasses? oof haha. I am certain Lagoona changed because Frankie HAD TO CHANGE (licencing issues) and they didn't want similar color patterns on the main Ghouls to avoid mixing them up. If a set of sharp teeth makes a character look ugly to you, then Idk what to tell you. You are complaining about the appearance of a character in a show that preaches acceptance, flaws and all. Preatty sure that also include like visual flaws haha. But you do you. It is okay to dislike a design. I just think the way you formulate it, is very superficial and just hating on it to hate on it, not really giving a reason other than ...you find it ugly? Which again, that's fine, beauty is in the eye of the beholder after all but geeez. xD The movie was fine for me. But I am aware that I am easily entertained. There was stuff that I found super cringe and "ugh really?!" too but I don't hate it. I also don't love it, but it was like, just fine. I know people HATE change and love their Nostalgia, but I still think some of the hate that is going on around the G3 reboot is just vile and nasty and again...very contrary to the ONE MESSAGE, the one Moral lesson that Monster High taught. Be yourserlf, be unique, be a Monster. Everyone is welcome, flaws and all. And a lot of the characters were changed so that the current generation of Kids can identify with them more. They target today's children with G3, not the now grown-ups from over 10 years ago. For those, Mattel will continue to produce G1 Dolls. Check out Clawdeena9's recent video on the topic, they provided good inside.
