IWhen I was a kid there was a slot car track in my hometown. there was a bunch of kids that raced cars and I would build cars using old model cars and beer cans. They were metal and I shaped chassis from them. I would buy motors and electric brush systems, and shaped them into cars that could compete with the expensive cars the rich White kids raced. The management of the place loved my cars as I did things like staggered tires, offset drives, and if i crashed I would fix the cars and race them again. Some of the rich kids would give me their old stuff and i would use it. I amassed a large collection of parts like this. I didn't win much but I just liked racing. Eventually I outgrew slot cars and became a worker but I never forgot what I learned in those days and I am a racing fan to this day.

Edward, great story. I've been into hobbies like slot cars and r/c stuff my whole life and I'm 67 now. Still flying. When I was about 12 years old a place opened near me with a huge slot car track. I would ride over on my bike and race there. The only thing I take exception to in your comment was about the rich white kids. I am white ( I still long for the day when all of us do not identify ourselves by our skin color, kinda like what I heard when I listened to Dr. Martin Luther King's great speach ) but I was by no means rich. Many of the other racers were white too, but not rich kids. I worked at various jobs like mowing lawns, etc. to make money for my hobbies as a kid, as did the others there. God Bless you sir, but most white people are not rich. Most live day to day, paycheck to paycheck. Bottom line though is your story is great. brought back nice memories. And I, like you, always liked to make my own, or improve on existing cars. Hope you are doing well.

Another great reason to move to Canada. This would be awesome as a two lane 6 car layout. 52 years after I thought the hobby died ( i had a Ford GT 1/24 with mag chassis and Hemi motor I re-wound in 1964) I recently found it still lives. Now I need some space!

As a kid growing up in the '60s, there were at least 4 excellent tracks in my hometown. My brother and I had 1/24th scale cars, dad didn't have much money but what he did have he made sure my brother and I had fun. Often times he'd take us to a hobby shop that specialized in Lionel trains, but in the 'back room' had this AWESOME slot car track, and the shop owner would let us race on the track for next to nothing, knowing the financial situation my dad was in. I still have my first car, in fact.Great times, good memories.

Great setup. You brought back memories of when I built this track in HO scale and raced for hours in my basement. I had no lights down there so I I ran an extension cord down there from the first floor and plugged in a lamp and the track. My mom thought I was smoking pot and she laughed when she realized after I got off work after school I would run down there and race all my new cars on a slot car track and was not some crazy teenage pothead. She was like your just like your dad lol I remember in order to create this track to match the batman episodes one I had to custom make some track areas out of tin foil, foil tape and in laying a slotted line in the wood. Took me months to figure out lane changes and I also used a digital hotwheels track counter to determine speed and laps. All I know was it was no easy task and I had years of fun. Thanks. Im currently getting back into slot cars HO and 1:24 scale :D

Moro Craft Hobbies in Edmonton had an enormous slot car installation in the late sixties. I think it had 8 lanes and may have had more than 100' of lane length. I rented cars there a few times but I was rather hopeless. It was more entertaining to watch the skilled operators with their own cars. Several were capable of lapping the field in 3 laps and 100 consecutive crash free fast laps. I kind of forgot about it until I saw the video. Curious that you should also be in Edmonton. I'm glad people are still doing this cool hobby involving actual, real, non-digital objects.

I have a tip to share. If you want to rent the track to one person take my advise. Prepare 3 track cars. The track cars are like bot cars that drive themself. How to prepare them is you need 3 donor cars. Each car will be fit with a rear track guide. This will prevent them from spin outs and prevent them from coming off the track. Then you need 3 controllers with tape on the throttle so they drive themself. Each care can be set at a challenging speed! It’s a TON OF FUN for one person to enjoy!

There are plenty of slot car clubs in Britain, ranging from the 1/64th scale up to 1/24th scale, from shop bought cars to home built cars, from scratch built to kits, ranging between approximately £20 to £400 a car. And I've raced at various clubs through the whole range up to national level. Try searching for BSCRA (British Slot Car Racing Association). They are also on Facebook. They are mainly for the expensive kit type cars, but they do list some clubs that use shop bought cars, but not all of them.

Check this out, they could be coming back. www.imfromdenver.com/brand-new-celebrity-sports-center-coming-to-colorado/ I use to go there with my dad when I was a kid. My dad built pools and worked on theirs and I would wonder around and remembered the giant slot car track they had there. We had a hobby shop in Longmont that had slot car track on the ground floor and an HO track upstairs, Bob's Toy Chest.

@@randy1203 Sorry Randy. I never really calculated the track in length per foot, per lane. When I said "big", it was meant, in part, as a joke. The whole track rests on a 8' x 16' table and has multi-levels. I'm not a mathematician that can figure out how long the curve sections are once you straighten them out and add that length to the already existing straight sections to tell you that one lane is a scale 300 miles while the other is a scale 310 miles. I just never took this so seriously to figure that out.

what and how does your point system work?
@monsterhobbiesonlinestore9 ай бұрын
It's basically a copy of the points system used in vintage auto racing from the real world 1960's Formula 1 points system. From memory, the first place winner gets something like 15 points for coming in first, second place is 10 points, third place is 7 points...and reducing as you go along until the last place driver gets 1 point. Since we usually did 8 races in a night on the same track, I tallied up all the driver's points for each of the 8 races and then ranked the drivers scores on the final chart of the night. So if you were a really good driver and you came in first in all 8 races for the night, you would get 120 points. If you had a "Mixed Night, you could get between 9 - 119 points in a night, and if you totally messed up the entire night, you would get 8 points. Secondly, we would race between 8 or 9 races over the 2 months of the league (every Thursday night) and the points from each night of racing would get added up across the board. Therefore, the guy finishing first over the 8 racing nights (2 months) would end up with 960 points for the league while the worst driver would get 64 points. Once all these league points were added up at the end of the league season, I could announce the league winners.

Hello I have an old track from my youth. Looking to rebuild it for my son. Looks just like the size of this track. 3 questions. What the scale of this? Whats a pair of cheap cars that would work for it? I'm also looking for a GT 40 1966, 68 69, style model. Would your store sell them? Thanks for this video. Enjoyed it and has inspired me to build my old track
@monsterhobbiesonlinestore6 жыл бұрын
Well, to answer the 3 questions : 1.) This is Carrera Digital Slot Car Track. It can handle both 1/32 and 1/24 scale. 2.) The cars, because they are Digitally Equipped, are going for about the same price as a PS4 game. 3.) Carrera brought out a model of the recent Ford GT 40 from 2016, but there is nothing in the 1960's version. Below is a link to my available Carrera Digital Slot Car stock. www.monster-hobbies.ca/Hobby_Products/c22-carrera-digital-132/

We tried to set rules to make it fair but guys found ways to cheat including myself because I knew they were cheating . Heck of a lot of work. Well done. Really liked the reply to the "person" (Insert adjective where applicable) who has nothing to contribute down below. Being in Florida, I'm afraid I'm too far to visit, though I'm hoping to see Canada someday. Did you meet your goal of 12 racers? When I was a kid back in the 60's and early 70's, we had a number of racing facilities down here. But you touched on one of the main reasons the hobby died in these parts. As video games started to become more available to the average consumer, the want for actual human contact waned until it became what it is today. I miss those days and still have some of my 40 plus year old slot cars, the H.O. scale ones, spare parts and all. I remember those Batman episodes, but being a kid, I hated to be in suspense for a whole week. So I would miss one week, and then they would recap anyway, but I just couldn't live for A WHOLE WEEK in suspense. Kind of silly now, but back then, A WHOLE WEEK. XD. Thank you so much and God Bless from Florida.
