I have so many amazing memories from 4U, but my 2 favorites are: 1) Was 2-manning Teostra with a buddy. He changed areas and we went after it. I entered the area first, he immediately charges at me and then starts to supernova right by the entrance to the area. My buddy was scarred for life after he got OHKO'd immediately upon entering. 2) 3 of my friends and I were going into G Rank Ukanlos. Friend A says that it's actually his first time fighting it, but that he's sure he'll be fine because he's really good at the game and he's wearing full Gravios armor which gives him big dick defense. After talking all that mad shit Ukanlos put him in his rightful place. I kinda sound like a terrible person when my favorite memories are of my friends suffering lmao.

I think 4U is one of my favorites in large part due to monster pacing. Some of the more recent games want to get you to the real big lads really quickly, but I love how long it takes for you to get to zinogre and tigrex in this game, it makes the journey you took to get there seem so much more significant, and you get so many dang cool monsters along the way. Gen U is fine but the monster pacing is a little destroyed when I can fight sireggios in village low-rank pretty easily, 4U avoids that and does a great job of pacing and building the player up to even more shocking heights

I'm so glad 4U is getting more love these days. It wasn't my first MH game (that was Portable 3rd) but man it's my favorite by a long shot. And I think you hit the nail right in the head for me... It's such a pure experience, stripped down of a lot of """""fluff""""" that later entries introduced, while still having probably THE MOST charm out of the entire series, and the best story imo. Hell, if you compare this to gen/GU on the 3ds, 4U is the better looking game. Yeah it's not HD, but not only it runs at 60fps on a new 3ds, I think the lighting and textures look better. And the reason is probably because Gen/GU added a lot of visual effects to not only arts but the regular feedback like hit effects and etc, so they had to dial down on the visuals... I still play 4U solo from time to time, I wish I could get some of my friends to play it again but most of them don't even have their 3ds anymore.

Still my favorite MH game, just had the best endgame imo and Apexes were the absolute pinnacle of challenge for solo players. You get 2 minutes to maximize your damage with wystones and de-apex the monster in order to have a steady DPS window, and its really damn tense. You either pull it off or spend 3 minutes playing really cautiously while waiting for your wystones to charge. The first time I soloed a Lv140 Apex Rajang and Seregios, that was the best feeling I got from a MH game. Hands down.

I used charge blade for a majority of 4U, and I always liked it’s play style more than Worldborne’s and rise’s, like you couldn’t just spam the ultra slam, you had counter and attack very precisely. The guard points were also super tight and had very small windows, but that made them more satisfying to land. That and it was busted and could knock out monsters with ease.
@mhk69432 жыл бұрын
The Savage Axe playstyle from Iceborne was similar in that vein which was why I liked it. Mantles do seem to take a bit of that experience away but I never use them anyway because of how annoying it is to equip/unequip constantly.

So, I'm with you on that boat about LS bloat. Truthfully, it's the one weapon that I can't quite seem to unclick from my older ways of playing it, and worse yet, most people find my opinions on it to be somewhat ridiculous - those being that 4U had pretty much the perfect LS, and it only needed some slight adjustment. In 4U, the Longsword's red aura was at one of its strongest points. Good duration, great power output (1.3x !!), the only thing 'wrong' with it by most folks' interpretation was the fact that when it ran out of aura, it dropped to zero. Now, here's the thing about 3U's longsword. In 3U, longsword did not have a roll-attack. Also, once you fade slashed, your current combo was ended. Your only way to raise your aura was via a full spirit combo, 1-2-3-F. Back in Tri, when you hit full spirit, you KEPT full spirit for a long time - it was temporarily infinite, and as long as you kept spamming the spirit combo, you kept your red. In 3U, they changed it - you had to maintain both your spirit AND your aura, and you gained basically no new moves. In 4U however, while you did run out of Red Aura eventually, and you'd have to do your spirit combos to get it back up, there were two differences that had a HUGE impact on the weapon's gameplay: First, you had a roll attack, so you had a way to close distance AND get spirit at the same time, this alone made spirit maintenance significantly easier; Second, you had the Fade-Spirit Closer, which allowed a fade slash to go into a move that not only closed the distance you had just cleared, but acted as the second step of your spirit combo, essentially skipping one move and a significant chunk of time, while allowing you to keep the pressure up out of a fade slash, which prior to this point was a move purely for repositioning and evasion and thusly ended your attack pressure. Yes, your Aura faded. But it lasted longer than it had prior (60s in 3U, 90s in 4U) and did way more damage, and not only that, you had a new path into the spirit combo that significantly shortened it and gave you MANY more opportunities to get into it, and on top of that, with the roll-attack alone, spirit became significantly easier to manage. Whereas in prior and later games both, spirit and aura maintenance would constantly be something on your mind, a kind of gentle pressure that altered your gameplay slightly that was always there with that weapon, in 4U you had basically the ability to go into a superpowered mode where you could focus entirely on using the appropriate moves at the appropriate time, instead of constantly having to worry about the spirit/aura gauges. It wasn't uncommon for people to stay in yellow until they sensed it was a good time to pop red to take full advantage of it, but that only strengthened the flow of 4U's longsword even more. Following GU however, they put in a few old samurai memes as actual moves, like the delayed cut, or the counter, and even though they were hunting arts, from that moment onward they became part of the Longsword's identity. While the original core of the weapon was there, starting from World onward it seems to be leaning more and more into the anime-esque samurai identity. The helmsplitter, the counter, the special stance/iai slashes, they don't feel right to me. They feel like something the weapon originally wasn't. It doesn't feel like there's been any real adjustments to the Longsword's core moveset for a while, just additions in the form of new mechanics that outshine the original moveset. Watching Rise demo footage consist so much of spirit dives and perfect iai spirit slashes is a bit disheartening; while these moves are certainly cool in a vacuum, the way they deprecate so much of the rest of the weapon makes me sad. And this kind of idea is making its way into Hunting Horn, as well. The hardcore fans of it are beginning to see something that wasn't originally there creeping its way in, and are understandably worried that it'll stick the way you can feel that some of these new LS additions have stuck. It makes me all the more thankful that some weapons, like lance and hammer, silkbind moves aside, still keep so much of their original identity; their simplicity is their identity. Meanwhile I have to suffice with being happy that my boy Axe Mode Switch Axe is getting some attention, it feels like for the first time since 4U gave it the roll into upswing and roundswing finisher. It took until GU to get Tempest Axe, and until Iceborne to get Power Axe, but it's nice to see the activated phial apply to Axe Mode, too. With knowledge of the leaks, I'm looking forward to the next Rise stream, too.

Excluding the random guild quests which locks up the higher end charms into them, MH4G/4U is one of the most fascinating series out there. Personally I still hold MH3G/3U as my personal favorite with the implementation of underwater battles, but 4G/4U has a charm of it's own that even XX/GU can't beat. This was a great video keep it up, I like how you understand that mechanics dont always start off great in the game they're introduced and may need refining, I honestly hate when someone says they wish they dont bring back the world skill system cause of the end game being bland and complain its in rise instead of seeing if they attempt to fix the mistakes of world's system, cause we know nothing about the system in Rise (I still think negative skills are coming in as we only say the starter set and I dont think they'll put negative skills on the starter set, plsu the problem with world was a lack of endgame monsters and armor variety which is something that honestly can't be as good as the older games due to just having move monsters its was just a flaw of having monster hunter in a new engine and will take a few games to really fix) The weapons do just feel good to use in any game, from the moment I played sns in gu I knew, that any monster hunter game is an amazing game, I do agree the long sword is bloated to kingdom come even if its in my top 5 weapons, mostly in the 5th place but still top 5, sns and hammer just are well rounded and balanced weapons, and playing guild with no hunter arts in gu is just good especially with something like long sword and Hammer, and if what you're saying is true that sounds like such a nice experience Before this video I would have given 4u a try if I got a chance but wouldn't be expecting much or go out of ny way to play 4u, but now I'm hoping that I can get to play this game to experience what you've said, great video love your stuff

Recently had someone saying that they didn't like 4U because they didn't like guild quests. I was like "Bro, even if you just choose not to do them entirely, the game still has more content than 3U, Iceborne and ANY of the high rank games. If that's your only reason, then you're actually an idiot."

Next time I meet someone who doesn't understand how I could possibly dislike the direction MonHun is going, I'll send them here. They don't need to dislike it with me, but when faced with the greatness that is 4U, there is no other option but understanding.

I've played this entire game. All the way up to HR Break and G4, I've tried every weapon, I've mixed sets, and took on every apex monster the game has to offer (yes, even the Apex Rajang), and one thing I've taken away from all those hours is that the Charge Blade is absolutely broken in this game, because charging it and hitting those guard points is so easy and quick, you can really get out of most situations. It gets to the point where I have to stop overusing the charge blade, its that versatile. Chernobogs Scythe is one of the deadliest, as by the time you've put the monster to sleep, you just barely got a red shield, and with status atk +2 the sleep effect gets wild.

I just beat the Caravaneer's Challenge after playing the game on and off since I first bought it on launch day. Never felt so happy to beat a certain quest in a game before. Everything about this game is PERFECT! I also love the graphics for what they are. I think the game looks beautiful when 3D mode is on.

Glad to see you enjoying 4U as that's my personal favourite monster hunter game and I honestly don't think it will ever loose that status for me it just did so much right, so much for the series from interactive cutscenes to mounting and it actually has a awesome story that weaves itself into the gameplay along with having in my opinion the best flagship monster and the game just has a personality about it that just makes it a cut above the rest

Still didn't watch the video but I can say without doubt, the best story plot in a Monster Hunter game, it MAKES YOU WANT TO PLAY FURTHER, and also the game where the 14 weapons felt super good without arts and stuff like that. It is something sacred in my heart

What I love in 4U is that even though it’s not as fluid, the game feels designed around those limitations. The only movement complaint I have is when I roll to a ledge and hop off, losing all momentum and getting flattened by an attack lol. But for the most part, I only have myself to blame when I screw up and I love that

Tri was my first monster hunter game, and I ended up putting a ton of time into 3 ultimate, but even though I prefer the 3rd generation of monster hunter I can't deny how awesome 4u was. Up to that point in the series 4u had the most monsters available to hunt, with a grand total of 98 monsters in the game. 3u had 73 which was considered massive at that point, and when 4u came out and had 25 more than 3u it was colossal. 4u is to this day the entry in old school monster hunter that I've put the most time into, being that its the only old school monster hunter game I've reached g rank in. 4u really felt like the best of all the MH games that came before it, combined with the best of Capcom's new features and innovations in the series.

This was my first game and easily my favorite so far. The best cut scene in my opinion is from the first time you meet crab boi. It wasn't that unique but I was not expecting to start off the fight in a tree

4U is by far my favorite story-wise. I really liked how going to the different themed areas was actually linked to the story and how it was the squad moving on to the next thing. Then generations is like "alright you did the intro quest, here's all the villages you can jump to now". Would *really* love 3u and 4u switch ports

I wanna quickly call out the blood splatter and general hit effects in MH4U, as opposed to any game that came after it. In MH4U, blood swirls and sprays, when you hit a weak spot. It muted in color and gone in an instant, but so bespoke and it feels so good to hit that head with a cutting weapon and just seeing it swirl around in wavey shapes. Same goes for the element effects, fire bellows around in swirling circles while dragon and thunder burst over the screen. It was such a contrast for me from the very first japanese MHgenerations trailer, and how much the hit effects lacked in style. Massive amounts of dust particles linger for seconds at a time on occasion, and bright white and yellow sparks fly up from just any old weapon. MHWorld was more readable, but lacked the artistry, MHRise brings it to new heights to where a crit on a pierce shot nearly completely hides the monster. It kindof bothers me to be honest. Call me a boomer, but hit effects and feedback hasnt been done better since MH4U

I never got to play the full game as a kid because my mom wouldn’t let me get new videogames (I was “too old”) I only had 2 3DS games but I managed to get the demo of this game off the Eshop and boy did I play it. I fricken loved the little camp you would start in on one of the available levels the game was so fun and I played online a few times. Sadly, I don’t know if anyone really plays 3DS anymore and there is probably almost nobody playing this game. But I am currently buying a ton of gameboy-3DS games I never got to play when I was young and this game will surely be one of them.

Favorite 4U moment is when I tried the Ukanlos quest I can't finish on G-rank. I always do it with 4man random peeps who never learned how to coordinate with the aggro which always ends up failing. One day, I saw someone put the quest on the tab and I help the person. We are only two but we actually managed to beat the Ukanlos without much problem. Another story is when I hunt with a person on my friend list. We just decided to hunt Rathian for punching bag and someone joined the hub. During the hunt, the random person just keeps mounting and my friend said "autiistic pole vaulting!!". I just wanna keep hitting the Rathian like a punching bag, not watch someone do a rodeo....so I flash bomb it, hehehe

I've yet to play rise, but 4U is definitely my fondest MH title. Great monster variety, and some of the best weapon and armor design. They integrated vertically beautifully. I much prefer it's mounting system over Worldborn. It's awesome seeing the monster frantically try to get you off it's back, and is faster paced

About mounting, yeah it's easier to perform compared to later games, but also not that broken imo You just waste time (if u don't play IG, that is) going on ledges and trying to land jump attacks properly (at least after the first mount which can be donr in 1 or 2 attacks). I usually only do one or two mounts in 4U cause otherwise you just waste time, you're faster just hitting the monster and occasionally land jump attacks when tou have ab opportunity. The really broken thing is the IG + CB combo. Basically with IG and a good armor, u can often flinch the monsters and then knock them out with a stun phials CB. Then u just bully it in a corner. High level Guild Quests don't have that problem tho, since the monsters have a much higher mounting resistance, so it's even more pointless to try to mount them over and over, you just waste time.

I love Gore Magala and I would say he (and Shagaru ofc) is one of if not the biggest reasons to play the fourth gen. The frenzy/apex mechanic is better than tempered/AT monsters and hypers combined. The story surrounding frenzy and your hunting caravan is better than even MHW and it's more cinematic style. Gore/Shagaru Magala is in my top 20 monster list and while I like monsters like Valstrax and Glavenus more, Gore is the best flagship to me
@emblemblade92453 жыл бұрын
*Sad pinecone noises* Gore seriously stole the show though. Phenomenal identity, and I love Shagaru even more

There is definitely a threshold increase to mounting! Usually it takes 1-2 jump attacks to mount, then 3-4 after that for the next mount, and then about 5-6 and so on. If you haven’t heard of it, there’s a database for the series called kiranico, where you can see the thresholds on each monster’s page. Even if it’s hard to tell the exact damage you deal from mount attacks, the threshold data gives a sense of about how much more you’ll have to do after each mount. Also while mounting was definitely at its best in 4U, part of the reason was the Insect Glaive, which could do jump attacks from anywhere, whereas other weapons needed the monster near a ledge, which was sometimes surprisingly hard to get them to do. I started 4U last year and have been playing almost nonstop until now, just wrapping up things before Rise. Trust me when I say you have a wild ride ahead of you! Also heck yes to the SnS love! I used it the whole game and it felt so good improving with it over time.

My favorite weapons in 4u are 100% the long sword, charge blade, and insect glaive. I'm a big fan of the range and combos each offer. Charge blade with full Impact Phials is insane, same with sprit slashes with longsword, and the pure unadulterated mobility and power of the insect glaive makes me moister than a God damn oister my guy.

I know it'll never happen, but I wish capcom would pick this one to come up to the switch. It's my favorite entry and I'm missing the simplicity after world and rise. This one by far has my most hours in the series and I'd do it over again if I didn't have to get another 3ds after mine broke :/

Once you reach high rank and specially g rank mounts are not as easy to spam... generally. You can expect to get 1 mount per hunt with most of the weapons... other than Insect Glaive. With IG you can get 2 easily and even more if you just spam aerial attacks. If you have the Mounting master skill then it's even easier. I can still remember 4-5 mounts per hunt with the final boss.

THIS game is to me the best MH game i played and my favourite game of all time, the flagship monsters were the best in my opinion, the final boss was epic, the end game challenge was insane (harder than most of the game i played) and the community back in time was adorable and sweet by far the golden age of the MH series

But the more I play it, it might go MHGU, Rise and then World as my tier list. But that's my tier list. I am sure others would say World is the best no matter what and that's okay too.

I would recomend to try 2 gen and go foward from there ,all old games have so much charm and are fun but its easier to experience and like them from older to recent games cuz going from 4u to Freedom Unite (last 2 gen game)for example is harder and you will feel the combat bad ,simple, boring or harder without some moves and attacks on your fav weapons. And thats a shame because all old games are fantastic games.
@meikahidenori3 жыл бұрын
I'm hoping to see one of these for 3U eventually since there's still players on the WiiU and the 3ds (and you can still get the DLC on the 3ds version along with 4U & Gen.) Tri was where I started and while many complain about underwater combat, I actually loved it, it was really designed to use the wii remote and nunchuck over the pro controller and was alot more easier to control with them. It did however take a bit of getting used to and many just didn't get the hang of motion controls and always brand any game that uses them to be terrible....when there was actually many games like Tri on the wii where motion controls were the better way to play if you were willing to learn them (atm I'm doing two player co op arena with my daughter, both using the remote/nunchuck and we're having a ball.) I still love 4U though, but unfortunately unlike Tri I never finished, hitting the G rank wall. Will have to try again before Rise. Also anyone still complaining about HH in Rise, please go back and play Adept Style HH in GU. You'll realise how similar they are.
