Yama Tsukami was actually a siege just like Lao, you would follow and fight him across the whole tower, until you two reach the top where you can slay him. its very likely they changed that for Freedom 2/G cuz the psp couldn't handle, so we get a arena fight instead. As for the map quantity. FU has EVERY Map and Monster from MH1 to FU. so yeah lot of content haha

31:20 so uhh, fun fact; in Dos, Yama Tsukami is fought as you ascend the tower rather than simply just at the top. They also removed the part of the fight at the top of the tower where his main body is further away from the tower, which I found to be weird. Also, for some reason, he was absent from Freedom 2, making him the first and only monster to skip a game prior to Tri. As for reasons to play Freedom Unite, the only real reason to play it outside of the roster that has yet to come back is honestly the Dual Blades moveset as the second gen moveset is more or less completely different....But at that point you may as well just play Frontier as the Frontier DBs are based off the 2nd gen DBs but with some extras that make it a lot of fun. Other weapons? May as well just stick with 3rd and 4th gen if going back to older games. Also, thoughts on King Shakalaka and Vespoid Queen? :^

11:00 as for that, my theory is that they were made this way to balance ranged weapon, as large monsters often get destroyed by lbg/hbg and the dev team must have realized it at some point, they made the small monsters a threat which isn't really the case when you play melee because the small monsters will often get hit by large monsters attacks. Personally I think it's amazing and offer a completely different perspective to the fight as a gunner in MH where as hitting the boss is far easier but you have to take into account everything in the arena with you, notably genprey and vespoids which WILL paralyze you and get you vulnerable to heavy hitting attacks as you have low defense. It's a perfectly balanced world achieved very early in the series which fell off a bit with the generations as small monsters became weaker and large monsters became stronger but not strong enough to be a threat to gunners, even nowadays. edit : as for how dangerous are the charges, sure they are in that game, but I think you playing from a quite long distance most of the time is what makes them dangerous, often the motto in that game is to always stand near, on the side of a monster even with distance weapon, because otherwise charges will caught you nice video overall it was cool to watch, also holy fuck that texture pack looks amazing

@@aaa1e2r3 Oh, I was just reminiscing. I see how "has been" could've been misleading, though. When I did it, I took the brute force method... grinded out hayabusa (wanted to get it anyways), farmed Alatreon for his bow, and used a mixed set that consisted of Alatreon Commandment with crit eye 3, dragon atk 1, pierce/pierce up, and true shot up. Finished with 3 and half minutes and 20% barricade integrity to spare.

MHFU has this issue where like half the weapons will feel like actual dog water but you'll have a great time with the other half. The way I explain freedom unite to my new world friends is basically "It's either gonna be a clunky piece of shit or a masterpiece and there will be no in between. It has so much fucking charm, so much atmosphere and so many fantastic moments, if those can make you ignore the clunky swamp water that's hiding underneath then you're gonna have a great time!"

Playing the Freedom Unite for the first time, for me so far has been very refreshing coming back from Rise. I started with Tri and have played some of every entry. I actually miss a lot of the less player friendly features of the older titles because to me it makes it feel like you earned what you got. Sure, later in the game in Rise you do still have to farm for your gear, but you're given so much for free in the early game of Rise. Freedom Unite to me has felt so good, more like an experience than a game, if that makes any sense, and progression has felt slow but meaningful.

I never touched another MH title ever till years after World is out. The QoL in World amaze me.

It is how much better the game is compare to what is on the market. At that time there is almost nothing like the MHP2 and MH2G out there so when we play it it feels like the best thing in the world. But after MH3P, there are a lot more open worldish large monster fighting game available. So although the quality is there for later gen, it feels much less special and never have the feeling like its "the game" to play anymore.

I've always hated them in mhfu, but it amazes me that they don't come close to the level of awful that they were before. Small hermituar dealt more damage than large monsters if they hit you from underground, and the small conga were the worst thing ever conceived in mh. I played it all the way through white fatalis, and seeing 2-4 small conga in a room was all it took to instantly make the entire team despair.

Immense comment, good watch, I too have solo'd funny FU though there was a pointy weapon and not a pew pew (If someone makes me gun Ukanlos, I will lose my Felyne Temper). 4:36 my biggest L with the portable canteen is in F1 Gunpowder is a very important hidden skill and in F2, it's still determined by cat, but you can at least see it. 5:25 in mainline ps2 there are rotating stocks online, she is essentially that, but without the "I'm only fighting Fatalis on claw day" side of it, the DLC granny with meat and flashbugs is a lifesaver, I personally didn't use it until well into post Ukanlos. Ah right she also has Kelbi horns, in a game where having a mega potion will not put you in get one shot, it's basically max/ancients or nothing. 9:35 Yian Garuga is absolutely fucked, It has two spawns, it really likes going to one of them, naturally I lose 10 minutes of raw running around trying to find it because on my last one for a wing, it spawns at it's different spawn (8/9 spawned in the same place) and yeah flap flap turbo. 10:02 in F2 your box stacks to the number you can carry and in 1+2 you don't get that third page, it's gross. 12:50 Interestingly in dos, they have the repel system for the two sieges in FU and all offline elders repel, not hub elders, why? god knows because they had it working in MH1. 17:09 Gotta love flashbugs being mutual with flashbombs for thunder, or ice crystals being mine only. 18:00 the monsters are so fucking robotic 19:38 the Psuedo Wyverns (Tigrex model) and their fucking bite hitting you while you're on it's back leg. 20:07 in the visuals here you can see both Pink Rathian and Black Diablos getting stuck on the terrain propelling them, but they absolutely do Drift, Lunastra is a drifter, the metal raths are the most notcieable drifters. 22:45 the old gen variants/subs you can really see why we don't have many of these now, what's the difference? It's just blue. 26:40 in 1jp, you cannot frog Plesioth in the jungle to get him out due to the infinite (or whatever the cap is in 1, probably 99) Vespoid. 27:22 I think it's once again the monster getting caught on the map and pushing itself to you here, Lagiacrus in 3rd really, REALLY does this way too often, You'll especially see it on Ivory because the things just so fucking big. 29:28 fuck the crabs - Blademasters (gears strong though so we must perform remove crab) 31:40 In his original incarnation he can appear in the battlequarters, his frame one instakill suck can fuck right off though. 32:10 I'm surprised you didn't mention the swim, it's super magnetised, the middle of the map is completely fucked like Akantor, but here's how you avoid the swim I shit you not, Stand Still it will sometimes not damage you, you'll get stuck in there, then you walk out. It is absolutely the stupidest thing I've encountered in 1-fu monster hunter bar HRP. 37:00 I'll give you another point digging ps2 mainline, you don't have to spend 15 years grinding HRP furthermore in 1G and Dos you're actively punished for assisting players that are lower ranked than you. (if you're hr and help a lr you get reduced hrp etc) FU Is the best way to experience ancient monster hunter and what it doesn't have is what makes it stand out compared to the 3rd and 4th entries, it's also the last game in the series without infinite rng HELL (charms are tri onward) because gear, is gear, weapon is weapon. 37:34 Genuinely don't, you've already seen everything 1st can offer here, because 1-fu is going atop one another, like the series is now always trying to move forward and forward building on the past.

An interesting comparison I've always thought of is MHFU and Dark Souls 1. People will say FU (or Dos) is god's gift to man, "Real MH", better than World whatever, but it really doesn't have much of an identity. The old MH games were all iterative, and all basically just added stuff onto each other, Dos being the only exception but FU brought back Yama Tsukami which had skipped F2. Dark Souls 1 meanwhile has a ton of stuff unique to it and that is foundational for DS2/3, even if it is mechanically more simple and its design much less interesting in terms of boss fights there's so much there that is just DS1, while FU is just "old MH" and you can get a better experience with literally every monster in the game in another title in some way (Hypnoc you can fight in Frontier with the more fun weapons there, same w/ Yama) and it really is just nostalgia goggles hardcore on people, because objectively speaking the game is a lot rougher, less polished, and more limiting than anything since while DS1 despite being limited mechanically compared to DS2 and 3 is much more its own thing so still worth being considered as its own tier of good. I think 3rd and 4th and 5th gens were huge leaps by comparison to 2nd and I really think people are just in love more with some of the ideas rather than the reality of the execution.

Definitely love Freedom Unite as much as a feared Tigrx and hated Ashen Lao (couldn't pass him 10 yrs ago, never tried again, but definitely will), but you perfectly summed it up: "those fucking small monsters". 2nd gen was intro to the series and I do hold very close as one of my favorite games of all time. It’s my favorite in the series simply because of how difficult it was and the game felt rewarding when you finally got past whatever was giving you trouble. No other MH game has done that for me as everything that came afterward was too easy imo. However yes, from a modern take the game is dated and isn’t welcoming to newer players who would like to experience traditional monster hunter in its purest form. If I where to recommend a MH game who wants to try the original formula of MH in its perfected form, I’d just tell ‘em to play MHGU.

I find it funny how much of your criticism in the early section of the game is because you come from newer gens. monsters run away often? well in dos they'll literally run from zone to zone if you're not fighting them, it's hard to even get to where they flew because they'll have switched zones like 2 more times by then. Not enough bag space? freedom unite is crazy generous with its 3! pages! what luxury! small monsters are hard to kill and the bane of every hunters existence? in dos you'll have like 4 semiboss-level small monsters that actually take a ton of time to kill in every zone, and they respawn when you reenter. Overall this is really a trend of change that started even in gen2 and went all the way to world where everything's like the opposite. Dos is a bit too much for me but freedom unite is at the perfect level of "qol" for me. prooobably because I've been playing it since release... anyway, great video. I'm on my gunners journey through this game myself atm and it's been super enjoyable.

Not to say that your main conclusions about this game would be any different otherwise, but solo maining ranged weapons seems like a pretty bad fit for this game. The monsters already have a pretty low amount of attacks, like you said, and due to their simple AI this means many spam one or two moves over and over if you're at a distance. Handling the overly agressive small monsters is also much less of a pain with melee

So I also tried this game and I can definitely say, a lot of the criticisms are more so nit picks. It's a fun game that tells you to prepare before the fight and such. Also imagine complaining about a strong skill having a downside. Also the complaint that's most the monsters are trash is not true at all. I will say that if a monster is bad, it's really bad but the whole "only has 3 attacks" is absolutely not true. The fight are simple but fun. Garuga and Kush are good examples of being more fun to fight then in other games like in 4th gen. Another thing, charges while annoying, aren't hard to avoid and definitely don't always require you to superman dive. Sometimes you do have to but it's not that common. Saying that it purely nostalgia for why people love the game is bullshit and just another case of this man making him look like an entire circus
