I first met San about 15 years ago. He came into my place of work and tried to discreetly charge his ankle monitor with one of the power outlets in the lobby. Someone noticed that he wasn’t there as a customer and asked if we could get him to leave. I was tasked to escort him out of the business. I walked him outside and instead of making him leave I offered for him to use our outlet that was on the side of the building. We sat outside and talked while it charged. He told me all about his past. I was sad to see he passed away a few years ago. I’ll have to pick up his book and give it a read.

I'm from NYC. And this book didnt make me want to be a gang memeber. But it helped me understand why my brothers on Los Angeles were in so much pain. And it helped me understand them better. Theres no fighters like the brothers in Los Angeles. On the East Coast we had Blocks and Crews . So it was just a much different world. The life in Los Angeles seemed so intense and stressful.

We are a product of our environment, unless we move away or completely abandon our past ways, we will always return back to the system.. I myself changed after beating a life sentence at 22 years old, it was the 1st time in my life I was ever scared. While incarcerated I was interviewed by a local news station, they asked why do I think people reoffend, I said for starters the system is designed for failure, it’s a set up, it’s literally a business, they want you to reoffend. I said most people from a bad background don’t know any different, and when the system tells them they can’t hang out/live in a certain area, or associate with certain people, this is their family, friends, and where they have spent their entire life, where are they supposed to go when they get out? She said why don’t they just “change”…I said let me ask you a question, if I took you from your good life, and threw you in a ghetto with $200, do you think you could survive? She said no, I’m not from that life, I don’t know anything about living there, I said EXACTLY, how are they supposed to change, you expect them to change, but how can you change if you don’t know how or what to change into?

I blame monster the most for the gang war the eight Trey’s had with the R60s, and the gun culture that street gangs now have. He has an interview where he says the war popped off because a member of 82 of the R60 had gotten in a fist fight, which resulted in a crip member retrieving a gun, from a car I think. and killing the R60 member who was involved in the fight. Everyone scattered when the bullets started flying. This shooting started the whole gun culture street gangs have today. The 60s demanded Monster give up the individual who had shot and killed their member. Monster told them he didn’t really know dude, he was from out of town of some shit. Who knows if monster did know him of not; the refusals to give the 60s a body amounted to monster basically telling the 60s to f-off. Monster could’ve given up anyone remotely fitting the description of the shooter. The false flag never occurred to him. And really, he should have just given the shooter up-or have the 83s dish out the justice themselves, if the 60s allowed it. Instead monster dared the 60s to retaliate-and the 60s did Huge blunder-stupid af
