There *is* a civilized Orc Kingdom called Many-Arrows in forgotten realms, lead by a lineage of an orcs that are more organized and civil. They're not exactly evil, but they're certainly not good at all. They have a long series of power struggles and interloping with demons, giants, dwarves, drow, and other orc tribes. Makes for a really good campaign focus. Check it out!

Tolkien Orcs are based on Legends of monstrous men from the Orkney Islands raiding Scotland and England. (Vikings had a raiding base up there for 400 years) The word Drow also comes from Orkadian legend from the word Trow (derived from Norse Troll) they where depicted as enemies of the native Orkadians hence the elves and orcs hating each other in Tolkien lores.

Way back in earlier editions the orogs were found in the underdark I believe?! There was some awesome art of one with bigger milky eyes and some wickedly long ears.

1:50 the Famine Perishable, that's probably not how its spelled, but that's what is called. No one except Eru had access to it. The dwarves were created by a separate Valar, and were granted true life by Eru when he saw that unlike morgoth the valar who made it did it because he was excited so he gave the dwarves the Famine perishable.

My favorite orc specific designed weapon was the Orc Shot-put. I think it may have been a Pathfinder thing, or maybe homebrew. Just a heavy metal or stone ball, dealing like 1d10 bludgeoning damage, but only about a 20/40 range. Just brute strength short range weapons. Maybe still use strength as the bonus instead of Dex because it’s too elf like to be precise and much more orc like to just throw heavy smash rock. Idk I love the flavor of orcs ambushing and just letting loose some heavy freakin cannonballs before trying to overwhelm the party.

I used Orcs once as a kind of plot point and a bit of forboding as to what the adventurers are coming across. They had attacked a group of refugees but it was with spears and bows. And what was unusual they didn't loot the bodies, in fact they didn't even retrieve the arrows and spears from the attack.

From what I've learned the non-native orcs were (in preious editions anyway) the grey orcs, who live in central faerun. Which is kinda weird, since most adventures take place in the sword coast, which is as grey orc free. The locals are called mountain orcs and they are different. They also have snouts. Which might explain why anime orcs always have pig faces.

I have a character in my Storm King's Thunder campaign who is a half-orc paladin, mother was a dwarf. I'm concerned that he only sees his orc heritage as "evil." Should I pursue this plot and make orcs despicable or have "good" orcs try to change his mind? We are in the north Sword Coast and Northwest Faerun regions presented in SKT, but I'm willing to let them travel. I'd love any suggestions!

Its 6months too late for a reply but maybe look into the Ondontie Orcs. The "Lawful Good" grey Orcs that worship Eldath the goddess of peace and tranquil places.

Orcs and tieflings breed true. So orc + tiefling = half orc, tiefling or both?

Good question. I would rule that the Tiefling bloodline would win out. Asmodeus' Curse > Orc genetics.

So I've came to a similar conclusion. However, such a tiefling may just take over if not driven out or killed. The follow up question I have is: can the Orc dieties still...bless...the tiefling, for running such a 'tight ship' or brutal campaigns.

In second addition the two sub races of orc were wierd they had same blood lines but it depended on there father wether orc or ogre the problem with multi writers lol

If theoretically anything can become a demon lord if all they need to is conquer a level of the abyss, what if Orcus was once an Orc that just made his way to the abyss some how and just conquered it and once he was promoted to Demon Lord decide his name would be based off what he was, an Orc!

Orcs were not a tolkein idea. Everything Tolkien used for his story was based in mythology. Orc from the latin orcus.
