@@robithaler184 I completely flopped on the roleplaying but everyone looked like they had fun. We're using Roll20 and I took the time to place NPC's on the GM layer and then pop them out suddenly. When the players were taking too long to do something, I would sneakily move the enemies a little closer until someone noticed that the Hell Hounds were staring at them hungrily. lol. I used some custom monsters I thought of years ago for my creative writing class. I made little bug-like creatures about a foot long. They were hidden underneath a thick layer of volcanic ash in a dried lava riverbed. Someone took some water to make sure it wasn't hot and it woke them up. Hundreds of them started clicking their rock shells against one another. If any of them had gotten too close, the entire swarm would have gobbled them up. Instead, they took a little hint from the DM and used the nearby lava to kill them all. But a few remained and attacked them while the party was busy with the hell hounds who killed an innocent giant rock crab minding its own business. lol

I found this video while looking for Monster Of The Week stuff (the game), and one of the things that MOTW does is it gives you monster motivations, and I think that's very fun. You can mix it with this stuff too. Here are the monster types in motw: • Beast (to run wild, destroying and killing) • Breeder (to give birth to, bring forth, or create evil) • Collector (to steal specific sorts of things) • Destroyer (to bring about the end of the world) • Devourer (to consume people) • Executioner (to punish the guilty) • Parasite (to infest, control and devour) • Queen (to possess and control) • Sorcerer (to usurp unnatural power) • Tempter (to tempt people into evil deeds) • Torturer (to hurt and terrify) • Trickster (to create chaos)

I commented on your last video about how I was running a player based campaign using the holes in my player's backstories and we've recently reached a huge milestone and I was kind of debating on which way to continue into the next part. I won't be running a "monster of the week" game, but I feel that the Chaser idea has given me a ton of inspiration on how to transition to their higher level adventures and create a lot of lore along the way. Thank you for continuing to inspire me.

I'll admit that the "Shadow" type villain you presented has been my most successful. It gave me the creative freedom behind the screen to alter events and improvise the most. It also had the best reveals. I've also used the "Chaser" type as well, taking inspiration from Clive Barker and creating a series of fiendish hunters that pursued the PCs. That created the most genuine terror. I've found that "Heavy Hitters" lead to the most PC death, as no player seemed to be able to figure out when they were in over their head. Apart from the types presented, would you consider something that possessed/took over one of the PCs (or close and trusted NPC) to be a "Shadow", a "Chaser" or would it be an "Insider/Betrayer"? It's entire purpose is to get close to the PCs and either pull a "bodysnatch" or to kill them secretly such that it can move on? I've had monsters infect/inject seeds/inject eggs into a PC, so I guess this is actually a "Chase" (the race for the cure).

I ran a campaign a few years ago that I poured every bit of my creativity into for several months before I even had my session zero. I pulled out all of the stops. Interdimensional horror a-la-Lovecraft, Yuan-Ti temple, forays into the Feywild, a mysteriously abandoned giant stronghold, and a well known (to the players) city upended by an undead invasion from the undercity. I was particularly proud of this plan, and if I had seen this video prior to running that game then I think that it would have went significantly differently. It ended poorly, unsatisfying to my players, and I had no idea where it went wrong. Your formula is something that I stumbled into without understanding it, and I treated what should have been my "racer" BBEG like a HH. Nearly to the letter of your explanation. Thank you so much, now I understand why that campaign failed. Next time, I won't make that mistake again. This is a game changer!

While watching this I somehow got a thought of a topic you haven't touched on yet I think. Adventures with a lot of timeskipps. Here's an example: Last week the adventurers defeated a young dragon that was causing chaos in the area. They had their epic battle, found the dragons treasure and had time to celebrate and reflect a little. This week you start of by saying: "Ranger you found the foodsteps of what ever caused that villagers to disapear and are currently discussing it with the druid youn your way back to your camp with the others. You can tell it is mostly bipedal, with 2 claws on each foot. Sometimes it uses it's hands to support it's weight or to push branches aside. It is heavier than a human and somtimes you spot small strings of web it left behind. Druid roll for nature. By the description of the Ranger you would say that it's an Ettercap a..." Basicly you skip a lot of the time between two adventures and put the players right back into action. Making it so the heroes are not constantly in dangerous adventures, without having the players to sit through longer times with little action. Monster of the Week is a campaign type where I think this could work. Have you ever tried this style of gming and have any thoughts about it?

Excellent content as always, Guy. I tend to use a combination of all these types of stories and villains (which you managed to succinctly summarize!) in most of my campaigns. There might be another type of BBEG, though it could just be a subclass of the Shadow. That other type is the Infiltrator, the villain who has insinuated themselves in the party's lives, working with subterfuge to thwart the PCs at every turn.

This is FANTASTIC. Definitely going to reshare a link on my blog to my roleplayers and followers. Another Monster of the Week that I like to use in my games: The Sympathetic Monster: Not a monster you sympathize with, but a challenger that the party will feel bad beating up/hurting. Best example of this is the street urchins who are asking for money and capable of stealing from them as they walk through town. It's a nice challenge because the party could just blow their way through them if they wanted, but the consequences would likely be too high. So it's an endurance monster that encourages creative thinking beyond the tip of a sword.

As I'm currently planning a monster of the week style campaign, this was a really interesting video for me. But I think you forgot at least two kinds of monsters. First is The Mystery: this is a monster that starts off as an unknown. It could be a murder that the party needs to find or just rumors of npcs going missing that the party needs to solve. What makes the monster interesting is that the party needs to find it. The second is The Puzzle: this is a monster that isn't what it seems to be. Perhaps there's a trick to dealing with it, or some misconceptions around its identity. The party might be able to brute-force their way through it, but if they can solve the monster like a puzzle, it will get a lot easier.

I would add the Manipulator. The PCs know who the villian is, but the villian gives them a nearly impossible choice. Or maybe the villian forces the PCs to do his bidding. Maybe this is a hostage situation like Die Hard 2 and 3. Or maybe a sick and twisted horror like the Saw movies. The PCs have to this horrible thing or the villian will kill their family. Something to that effect.

I really like your new format. I haven't checked your videos for a few months, and I like your new backdrop, music, and onscreen text. My friends and I run a true "Monster of the Week" campaign where we spin a wheel to randomly determine who will DM next week. So there's almost no cohesive over-arching story - just an unpredictable variety of oneshots with (mostly) the same characters. That's why I checked out this video. This was helpful, but I was a little disappointed when you said these ideas are more like 4-session mini-arcs. Do you have any videos with advice for adventures truly limited to one session? I can see how a Heavy Hitter easily works in a oneshot. Do you think it's even possible to do a Shadow in a oneshot? Thank you for your great content and help.

I'm running one now that my Assisting GM get a overview of the campaign and the wants and needs of the different fractions. His job is to, between sessions, help me as the GM decide what the fractions do in respons to the PCs action in the sessions and come up with NPCs and their background which carries out the fractions orders. I find it extremly useful to have a fellow GM who knows about the plot and campaign to have as talking partner between sessions. A suggestion for a future video: I'm trying to take of the ground a SF campaign in which the players need to build a sustainable colony in a hostile world. While there'll be combat, it's a secondary problem. @gnarthdarkanen7464
@gnarthdarkanen7464 3 жыл бұрын
So... a pioneering Campaign... While I'm (as of yet) not aware of a particular system or module to supply it, what you seem to need starts with mechanics... the Rolls for what the latest threat(s) are... Obviously, to start with, we need to idealize exactly HOW hostile this world is. It can be so horrific that human life is simply incompatible without technology to house and protect them... All the way to basically Earth with drastically different evolutionary principles at work... There are a fair amount of SF books and series about far different worlds and species, and even GURPS has supplements for creating variations of animals and mutants... BUT scarcity of resources aside (a mainstay in nearly any traveler adventure) there are more issues for pioneers than plagues and natural disasters... You can have various factions (and species) of hostile intelligent natives, predators (since pioneer colonists will have a hefty investment in agriculture) and invasive pests... even without a plague, necessarily, there can be dramatic losses in livestock and harvest that eventually run into shortages of foods and then plagues (as immune systems are taxed without re-energizing)... While we're on this subject... Let's also answer... "If this world is SO prohibitive, then why the Hell do these colonists want to go there???" Sure, the America-story is rife with colonists shipped over to penal colonies... BUT there was also a push to hype the "New World" as a solid investment "at the ground level" to improve one's life and the lives of his family and children and eventually descendants. Keep in mind, you DID mention a specifically SF Campaign. With Space-faring technology, it would make some sense that we (humans) would have some evidence of a profit to be made, and likely a reasonable plan with reasonable expectations of success... SO the relative "hostility value" needs off-set by some anticipation of reward, and a penal colony doesn't sound like much of a return on investment. While we (society at large) might well be rid of this bunch of psycho's, rapists, murderers, and thugs, the sad reality is, it's a matter of time before we've acquired or grown an all new batch of them... SO then what??? At base, then... I'd suggest there's some outward goal(s) and resources to be targeted to attract these pioneers and colonists to go to start a new civilization... or civilization anew. Somewhere, some how, then we have a "logistics" issue to address... harvesting or gathering said "primary resource" and then transporting it back to Earth (or homeworld X) such that it's useful so we (colonists and everybody) gets rich... or at least, that's the sales pitch. Hope this helps, and at the same time, I don't want to inundate you with the lines of inquiry... The main thing is, take your time... At some stage, you'll have numbers and problems to throw at the Players, and they'll have to supply solutions and apply skills to implementation... BUT if there's little or no relevant mechanics for this kind of scenario, you may have to design your own across much of the board. ;o)

@@gnarthdarkanen7464 Thank you very much for your advice, it's very welcome - and useful. Some of what you'd suggested I'd already thought of. here's what I came up so far: The Planet Arcadia is barely habitable, with an incredibly hostile ecosystem, much of it unknown. It'd not be colonized if not for the fact that's the only world marginally inhabitable in the region, and it's location have strategic importance. It's a sh***ole, but an important one. Some of the problems I came up, themes for the sessions: search and rescue, hunt and destroy hostile creatures, resource gathering, natural disasters (mudlsides, planetquakes, plagues etc.), the odd science expedition etc. My problem is that the only approach to overcome these obstacles are by choosing the appropriate skill and roll it. No interaction and very little in the way of planning or puzzling out mysteries. This won't fly with my players, problem solvers one and all (both of them at the moment) - or with me, to be honest. I need obstacles that I can create and they can stop, analyse, make questions and solve. There's a japanese RPG one of them pointed out to me, but thus far it's the only source material I've come across (and didn't read yet). @@sergioaccioly5219 If it was me, I'd start with anything Chronicling the actual lives and times in the old American West... say through the 1850's or so... Still primitive enough to get the verbal "feel" of pioneering, and yet recent enough we still have some reasonable documentation... Wagon trains were a thing, so when you want to mobilize, learning anything you can about that sort of process, along with encircling for improvised fortifications, would probably help... Even if you're not so much after the "roll skill to hit and roll for damage" kinds of adventures so much, a few should probably pepper through this Campaign... Dark Sun (from AD&D and 2e) was a fairly resource-starved setting. A steel dagger was worth a king's ransom, and magic use could get you killed, as there was a propaganda that using magic spent other people's souls... Finally, if you can find them, Survival and Field Guides and Manuals from the military are a great resource for the "how and what" you'll want to know as far as how the real world people do that "thinking on your feet" thing... I've long RP'ed things like traps and puzzles, and even combat, so long as I have Players who are willing to learn the terminology or reach some reasonable agreement without all the idio-sophical BS. RPG's are a balance between creating narrative license (a reason for something) and then delivering action. If a Player actually has a skill involved in survival, I have no problem giving a benefit (usually +1 to +5 bonus) to applicable skill rolls if needed... AND otherwise, you can let a properly descriptive Player even avoid some rolls all together. With a "Strategic Advantage" to the world, you've excused away a proper richness of resource, but now we have the imminent need for some "enemy" to be considered... while we think on this. Sooner or later, that enemy is going to realize this strategy and do something about it... SO there's yet another potential source of anxiety and demand on the PC's and others. To get everything into RPG terms, I'd suggest perusing GURPS and Traveler, and while you're looking into supplements, Seth Skorkowski does regular RPG and Module reviews and play-through expositions as well as War Stories from his past in GM'ing and other entertaining and informative vid's over on his channel (just search his name)... The love of visual aids, demonstrations, and all as part of the Game has driven me to crafts and building my own props, something you might also consider for some of this... Start simple, but even just sketching things out and explaining it can help both for Players AND the GM. ;o)

@@sergioaccioly5219 One thing that comes to mind if you want the players to interact more would be giving them a problem without an obvious right answer, such as social issues. Let's say one of the colonists commits a crime, then what? Imprisonment, forced labor, banishment, even outright execution, none are necessarily off the cards. How about if the perp is an important figure either in the colony's function or back home, like a doctor or has ties to an influential politician or a wealthy sponsor? Being lax with the punishment could lower the colony's mood and breed resentment, but being harsh is likely to have its own comeuppance later down the line. Of course, not all players are rational adults that can separate fiction from real life and won't take their characters butting heads personally, so whether it's the right call to include such things is ultimately up to you.

Hey Guy, regarding ideas for future videos: I have a problem engaging players. I know there are dozens of videos with tips how to do that on this very chanel however I still suck at It. When I try to make engaging npc or locations or storylines players are not engaged - because they have nothing to do nor agency. On the other hand when I try to give them free hand and try to go with whatever they come up with... they do nothing. They stare at me clulless as if dead inside... then I try to drag them, in more or less subtle ways by npc or even bluntly stating their options still no response. Other reaction is ruckus that they feel raillroaded or coerced into doing something. In sumarry when I try to move the story allong then players are unhappy, when I give them free will they do not use it. I've changed player groups and the problem persists so it clearly is my fault. I think I might quit GM altogether... any word of advise that might change my mind?

You encounter kinda shitty player I think, or new players, with them this kinda situation is frequent. Also try 3 things, first boredom, if you come to my game and then do nothing it's on you noton me as a gm: they will eventually do something. Second add a common goal to their background, such as working for the same organization or having the same quest, now you have a powerful hook built in their background. In this sense you should ask your player to always write a reason for their charachters to be an adventurer, this is what the background is for. Third use background, personal goal and everything is written on their sheet as a hook. Not only that but you could try some fun roleplay with npcs and then use these new friends the party has made as a hook, they will be more invested

@@Rey99m Well true my first player group was novice as I was. Still I can't say I have more than two dozen games under my belt as a GM and even fewer as a gamer. So I'm still novice apparently. My current player group is a different beast entirely they've played rpg since school regularly for the most part so they basically are much more advanced than me. Regarding using backstory or making engaging npc I try to do that to some success. The problem is that I only do that. I have tremendous problems with player agency. Also when it comes to rolling some dice or combat players are disinterested altogether. It seams I simply can't provide them any goals or my hooks are insufficient. I feel like they play along just not to make me feel bad. ;/

@@HowtobeaGreatGM I'm not sure if I can narrow it down, but with this episode I think it was a combination of cadence, the music in the background making me sleepy. And the video feels like being in class. I actually do take notes during your videos sometimes.
