Florida winter weather can be like a winter day in NJ or like summer in Central America on any given day. In Florida, Bass begin spawning in the winter months and continue into late spring. The bass holding on the beds can be active or inactive, according to the weather. If it is really cold, they may even suspend bedding activity and head back to deeper water nearby. You can often catch bass on sinking lures when they are inactive but present on the beds, especially on lures that crawl on the bottom, but even when the weather warms up just a little, they often hit topwater for a short period at the warmest part of the day. If the warm weather becomes even warmer and extended for multiple days, and especially with warmer nights with increased humidity, then the bass often become very active hitting topwater and become increasingly more irritated with invaders into their territory. There is not any creature much more irritating in very shallow water than an extra-large dragonfly flapping its four expansive wings on a calm, quiet surface just over their heads. And --- oh yeah! In a couple more months, the bass will be franticly leaping several feet into the air to get them. It’s a big, noisey, irritating, irresistible, unexpected opportunity!
