I am so in love with this game. I love how a full run of the game only takes about 25-35 minutes, and how its base difficulty is so much easier than Slay the Spire. And then you start working up to +25 difficulty!
@ddd-op5wy2 жыл бұрын
Its base difficulty being so low is making me dislike it so much. There's so many mechanics and things to play around with but I don't need to do any of that to win, in fact, playing with it makes the game too easy and boring.

Just started playing it a few days ago, having a blast. I am puzzled though by the huge amount of wasted screen area on the left and right sides of the battle zone, space that could be used to enlarge the battle area.

Just played it. It's legit, and just as addictive as STS. Not something I say lightly, as other similar deck builders have missed the mark in one way or another. This one does everything right, and it's own twists on the genre work really well. It's hard to say, because it's so fresh, but I might even like it more than STS.
@solsystem13422 жыл бұрын
I think I agree. Technically there are tons of different decks you can build in sts but, with the tower defense/auto battler mechanic at the heart of monster train along with score being a more ever present consideration I find it much easier to engage with monster train on a deeper level. It might also have to do with me having 250 hours in sts and I've hit the point of diminishing returns on runs being interesting. One thing that's definitely an improvement is how ascension works. In sts you always start with the same deck which makes the first few fights quite dull (ignoring a curse card which just makes your draws a bit worse, once). In monster train you always have to at least somewhat think about how the random cards you're given affect your strategy. Or at least consider how you're going to build around them.

100%. It's similar so it's easy to pick up if you've played Slay the Spire, but it's a lot different to StS as well. The main mechanic that makes it different is obviously the train itself. This little implementation alone makes it soooo diverse, even if you know what enemies you'll get each level. I've "beaten" the game twice and I'm still on difficulty +1. The mixture between the clans makes the game super replayable. Definitely worth the money!

Thanks for the review! I like your audio/voice, but the visuals are all over the place. The story you told was coherent, but the video was just quick/short bursts of scrolling cards and clicks (difficult to follow how this game plays).

I’ve put like 700 hours into Slay the Spire but I’ve been playing it less and less lately. I think my time with it is finally coming to an end. Luckily Spelunky comes out in 3 days on the Switch so that’ll keep me busy, but I also saw this game and remembered a lot of people comparing it to StS back when it released. I mostly ignored it until now but I think I might pick it up as well.

how does this compare to slay the spire? As i'm loving StS, im thinking of getting this due to the roguelike similarities

It definitely has a lot of similarities. If you enjoy StS, you'll almost certainly enjoy this I would think.

Not really. It's hard to describe how much monster train shakes up the roguelike deckbuilder formula. I'd say it's on par with Alina of the arena adding movement. It's similar things but totally recontextualized by the different focuses. With monster train caring more about minnions then spells and Alina focusing on movement and positioning as much as blocking.

How many times can I expected to lose before I win the 1st run? So far I’m 0-3. The “synergy” thing isnt clicking for me. Lots of cards to read, different stuff going on, different icons. Its not a quick game. Seems like you need to read and understand EVERYTHING written on every card, every turn, and well, that makes the game slow imho. Lots of keywords you need to know… not as easy as some people claimes. Cool idea but I hate having to read everything, literally, every card, yours or the enemy, has stuff to read, icons/effects… this is definitely one of those “i think i get whats going on but will never understand everything” kind of games. Too much going on.
@solsystem13422 жыл бұрын
I might be cheating because I have synesthesia but I felt like all the cards had an intuitive position on the tactical landscape. One big thing that I noticed though is taking challenges early is really essential. Don't take it if you think it will kill you otherwise just go for it. Other then that make sure you have a "money" floor or two where the minnions there can spiral out of control to be able to kill bosses. In monster train good isn't good enough, we want units with 40 spikes and 40 regen or multi hit units with 120 attack. It is methodical in a way sts is not though I won't lie.
