It's all about aesthetics adding to the sonic experience. I've got some very nice modern integrated amps. They have great sonics, but no 'soul'. When my kids come to visit it's always the SX-3700 that gets turned on.

I was incredibly fortunate to inherit a SX-1250 in 2016. I had it professionally recapped in 2017. I use it almost everyday day with a mixture of new and other vintage components. It’s the center piece of my system and I hope to have it around for decades to come. Great video. Love your channel.

Marantz today, builds a full line of audio equipment at some pretty high prices, but nothing near the look or build quality of the 2500 or 2385. What would be so difficult for Marantz to come our with a new receiver model of the same look and build quality as these two units, and price them accordingly?
@calebhansen37
@calebhansen37 3 жыл бұрын
Not difficult for Marantz at all, or other HIFi companies. It’s strictly business and simply comes down to maximizing profit. It’s just not as profitable for audio companies to make such high quality units, especially out of metal along with other high quality parts that last forever. Plastic is much less expensive than metal to manufacture. Plastic is also much lighter which costs much less to ship overseas. Quality vintage Japanese HiFi units have lasted for 50+ years with regular maintenance. At that rate, most customers will only make one purchase over their lifetime. Now compare modern HiFi stereo to modern auto manufacturers...they strategically use cheap parts that’ll are engineered to wear out quickly, because the auto companies want you to keep purchasing vehicles less than every 10 years. Same with modern HiFi stereo. When a unit breaks, they want people to get rid of it and buy a new one, instead of paying an electronic technician to repair it. Most these plastic stereo models are made so cheaply, that it’s more cost effective to buy a new one than pay for repairs.

Marantz management lack vision. Saul Marantz was a graphic designer and he made sure his products looked as good as they sound. The only modern receiver that compares is the McIntosh line made in the USA. Hooray!
@arnoldschloss9634
@arnoldschloss9634 3 жыл бұрын
@@roberte.andrews4621 That's correct Robert; the only modern receiver comparable to the top vintage offerings, is the Macintosh 7200 - $7500 and 200 watts per channel. They realized that there is still a market out there for product at that level!

Although i love all the 1970 vintage equipment, the Marantz line up has always been my favorite. I especially like the fact that you can still get the original lamps to resurrect the original sea blue dash color. The LED blue is ok...but not as appealing as the original color. The 2500 has the original color, and in a low lit room it displays it's powerful esthetic value. Love it.

You would be surprised at the amount of speakers that can handle 270 Watts per channel at 8 Ohms. Most damage to speakers happens by using an amplifier that isn't powerful enough and having the volume turned right up, introducing distortion and heat to your tweeter - Soft Clipping. That's your tweeters fried.

I still got my Sansui 9900Z receiver, still works great! I use to work at "Custom High-Fi" back in the day and I loved and would still like to have the Sansui G-9000DB, it's a beautiful receiver. If I remember correctly, my receiver came out the very next year of yours and was the last production of the Monster Sansui receivers. Mine is rated at 160 watts per channel at 0.015 THD - DC rated power also! I lucked out, in 1986 I bought mine from a local pawn shop, mint condition, for just $100.00, I think they retailed new at around $1200.00 in 1980, couldn't believe my luck. They really didn't know what they had! I wouldn't sell it for anything, and I've had more than a few offers!

@@vintageaudioaddict I know this sounds like bragging but I'm going to tell you anyways, completes the whole story. Back when I got my Sansui 9900Z receiver, on the same day, I also was able to buy a Nakamichi 682ZX cassette deck for just $50.00, it came off the same Pawn ticket - pull as the Sansui receiver, they literally thought it was just a plain, everyday cassette deck, I luckily knew exactly what it was and what it was worth! The Nakamichi 682-ZX cassette deck in 1981 sold for $1,800, and will still bring that much today in great condition! It stopped working the last time I tried to use it about six months ago, I guess I went too long without using it, it just wouldn't quite go into playing mode, I'm assuming it just needs new belts, cleaning, etc. from just being 40 years old. I downloaded the shop manual, gonna order a belt and roller kit and hope it fixes it! Cassettes are making a comeback, want mine up and working again! This is a cassette deck with a lot of intricate moving parts, might be above my paygrade for attempting this work. Suggestions?

This is a bit off topic but do you use that Mastech MS8268 for high voltage (tube amp) applications? Would you consider it safe to use, assuming all other safety precautions are followed (better leads/clips, etc)? Any other comments on that meter would be interesting, thanks!

Thank you for your kind words. I love them all. Each of them show the engineering skills of the manufactures both cosmetically and electrically along with many skilled factory workers to make the products a success. A lot of talented people made these products what they are. 40+ years later each of them are ready to be used daily and be reliable. Pretty successful I'd say.

Greetings from the USA! I don't plan on selling anything in my collection at this time. eBay is always an option as some sellers will ship to other countries but is usually more expensive. A swell display of some hefty and freakin' heavy receivers. I never owned a TOTL receiver, couldn't afford one back in the day. I did use a Marantz 2252B and Pioneer SX-880 but like my Hitachi SR-804 much better. Purchased in 1979 and still in use, the SR-804 is my main amp. To bad you left out Hitachi's SR-2004 and receivers from Yamaha and Kenwood. My SR-804 weighs under 24 pounds and is a 50wpc class G receiver. Do a video on vintage speakers???
