The Each Usige being able to grow to accomidate its riders reminds me of Bayard, a french folklore horse that could do the same. But that horse was bay, not grey. But the french were celts once, so a facination with magic horses isnt surprising.

Great video! In Sweden we have our own Kelpie and we call it Bäckahästen. It trick children to ride and then jump in to the river or lake to drown them.

Interesting, I haven't heard of that one. Water horses that drown people seem to be pretty widespread around the world. I wonder what might be the exact reason for this. Thanks for sharing!

@Evelina Gillheim That and keeping kids away from the waters they can drown in. It does combine two life lessons into one, after all, which might actually be the reason.

In Scandinavian countries and Germany there’s a folklore creature called a Nøkk, Nixie, or a bajillion other very similar regional names for some reason. They seem to usually be attractive men or mermaids that play the fiddle or sing to lure victims but some stories also have them be water horses that drown people. I think the water horse in Frozen 2 was based off of them. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nixie_(folklore)

It's been a while since I made this video, but as far as I remember I didn't include them because they are primarily humanoid creatures. They are somewhat similar to kelpies, but there are a lot of creatures associated with water and drowning.

I've heard it's pronounced something like aggh whisky. I also heard it's a water bull and the opposite of the kelpie, they cancel each other out.

I'm don't know about Scottish, but "Uisce" is Irish for water, and it's pronounced "Eesh kay." One thing to note is that the regions of Ireland and Scottland are quite distinct, and with that comes a myriad of different accents and pronunciations, so it's entirely possible all are correct.

When it comes to designing a plausible real kelpie, would've gone with a moose base. They're excellent swimmers, to the point of finding themselves a regular on an orca's plate, and have a very equine silhouette. Kelp getting caught on their heads could easily look like a mane. Actually, now that I think of it, it's entirely possible moose are the origins of kelpies and similar tales. I don't think they live on Scotland or Ireland, but Scandinavian cultures have many water horse myths themselves, and the Celts were from that area originally.
@ACrowingCockatrice2 жыл бұрын
Yes, working with a moose is an option, but it is difficult to justify their transition to a carnivorous diet. Not impossible, some ungulates are known to occasionally snack on small animals, so one can work from there, but for me entelodonts were a more fitting choice. As for moose being the origin, I think it is unlikely. Water horses are not generally described to be massive and I don't think any of them have antlers, which the Celts were bound to have seen atop a few moose heads. Additionally, moose would have been hunted, so they were likely rather familiar with the animal, knowing they are not fully aquatic or man-eaters. Now, it is possible that a few parents pointed at one of these animals, showing their children that water horses do exist and that they should indeed steer clear of the pond lest it takes them under. Therefore, a connection is possible, but I wouldn't go as far as inspiration. An interesting factor to consider nonetheless.

@@ACrowingCockatrice what I mean is two or more things; 1.) Could a human continue mythical bloodlines? 2.) What effects would this bloodline sired by a normal human have on the other bloodlines over time? 3.) If this is a case of ring speciation, can humans introduce intermixing starting with themselves mating with each subspecies?
@ACrowingCockatrice3 жыл бұрын
@@praetorianrex5571 Well, it all really depends on the established lore, on a case-by-case basis. If you mean froma realistic standpoint, that can also go many different ways. Incompatible genetics would produce no offspring, but hybrids are always possible, especially if we are talking about subspecies of humans.
