I think it could also have been from alligators that happened to have a crooked tooth or growth. I remember one of my family members having one in their pond that had a tooth that stuck out one side of its mouth.

Having an alligator in one's backyard sounds quite exciting. The most vicious invader of ponds here is a turtle, so I can hardly imagine the feeling.

it would be nuts if a reptile developed a pouch for easy protection instead of burying because carnivores or humans wanting to take them

An alligator seems unlikely to me. I live very close to Blanco, Arkansas where the most famous encounter happened and its just not the emvironment where alligators would ever be found. This area is forested and mountainous, which aligators are never found in. It also gets well into freezing temperatures here and despite the legends that it lives in caves which generally maintain a steady temperature, alligators still couldn't survive the cold with their need to hunt. Additionally and most importantly, there has never been an alligator spotted in the wild in this region. Which, if theres a monster sized animal in the wild somewhere, it only occurs when there is a corresponding population of normally sized examples of the same species living in the area. I dont know what they are, but they aren't alligators.
