Just a little surf guitar miming to this track we recorded forever ago. I've always loved this melody and playing it on guitar. We copied the Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet arrangement.

Flawless, masterful playing. 👏 You are a surf guitar wizard! And that tone... 😮 I have so many questions 😂 my first guess would be tube amp and spring reverb + mic with some gap between mic and the cab? I could be conpletely wrong though. It might be pedals or modeling. I'm super curious if you would mind saying, but 100% respect if you just say 'my secret' 🌞 I get it. 😂

Thanks! I'm a little self-conscious listening to this old stuff because it's a lot sloppier than I would like today, But at the time we were just thinking about capturing something raw and authentic. As for the sound, No secrets. So in that band I actually always used solid state amps. (I had a Fender chorus from the 80s -- plenty of clean headroom.) The "secret" is no secret -- the sound comes from the Fender 6G15 Reverb Unit. I had a reissue from the 90s. So that thing had tubes and a large made-in-America Accutronics spring pan. (The made-in-Korea ones are not as tight.) We tracked everything live, so guitar amp was at a good volume. I don't think we were too scientific with mic placement. We had no idea what we were doing. SM57 right against the grill cloth. Recorded onto 8-channel 1/4" Fostex reel-to-reel, which I think we pushed a bit into the red.

@@Thoracius wow! 😲 Thanks so much for that response! A dedicated tube reverb unit. Taking notes over here... It sounds so wet. I have some in amp reverb tanks and some decent spring reverb pedals and always wondered why it never sounded quite right. Now I know! Thanks so much
