That weird cell-like structure is the same as the one you'll see in the tails of lizards that can regenerate. Apparently, the MHW team specifically designed the tails after reptile tails that can be voluntarily severed. In other words, they're _exactly_ the kind of tail that grows back.

My first time fighting a Ratholos, I cut off it's tail, and got a Rath Plate, while I knew full well there was roughly a 2% chance of that happening. I was very amused by this. When luck balanced its books, however, and it took me four Great Baggi fights to get a drop that had a ~70% chance, I was not amused.

Fresh Hunter from the New World here. Can confirm. When you get somehting super rare but don't get common fucking shit that you need only ONE of to complete something awesome. Not cool. Not cool at all. That shit made me rage more than Teostra did when I was just 4 or so hits away from bagging it on my first run. Thankfully it's not that hard to fight an Azure Rathalos..at least to me.

Nah 'plate' is just a shorthand word to fit in english. It's actually a 'reverse scale' a spot in the wyvern's scales where a scale grew in backwards ( against the normal scale pattern 'grain' ) afaik theres no explanation for what orbs / gems or mantles are.

@@SunrisenStar Fascinating, I always assumed the plate was a unique, flat piece only found in certain, heavily built areas, like the head or tail, whereas the rest of the beast was covered in a regular flexible carapace of uneven shells. Also, like the description of MH4U says, the gems are likely crystals formed from impurities that found their way under the skin of the monster and were compressed by intense pressure to become the gems they are now. I mean, I only have like 6 total after 360 hours, so it's definitely a very rare thing.

And the idea is that in folk lore this is the most important scale of a dragon that can't be touched by others, and thus probably carry some sort of special property. As for orbs, it's probably some sort of solidified essences. Could be liver stone.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate has a mission set up for this kinda thing. The High Rank Guild Hall quest "Heat Exhaustion". The subquest is to cut Rathalos's tail. High Rank Rathalos in 4U has a 10% chance of giving a plate from the tail carve. Feeling lucky?

Fun fact: in MHGen, I took my Prowler team out and we hunted a Rathalos, and we were able to carve a Plate off its tail. (Not long before that, hunting a Rathian yielded us a Plate as well.) This has been the only time so far I've actually acquired them. And this being said, the random nature of monster drops is indeed . . . odd sometimes. Like, I'm fighting a monster and it dropped a shiny which turns out to be ... its pelt. (Or bone marrow.) Or we cut off its tail for a carve (acquired tail item), and when the quest is complete, in our quest rewards we get . . . TWO tails.

The point is they wanted it as fast as possible with as little risk for wasting time and resources as they could. Most pro-hunters do this, it's called "sub-quest exploiting". If it's not the sub-quest, it's called "hoping you get it, retiring if you don't, triple carting if you do".

You get more rewards if you do both the sub quest and kill or cap any monster you are fighting. Most likely you dont get it is because you quit without finishing what you started. Dont be lazy seriously

+LupineGamer Severing a tail several times is far faster than just killing a monster, especially if you flash bomb it repeatedly, stun it, put it in a shock trap, and have a lancer with the Taunt skill. You do all that, and with three other hunters, you can sever a tail in less than 3 minutes. Three minutes is a lot shorter than 15.

Thanks to a friend who's a big MH fan I got back into the series (overcoming my childhood memories of the game being frustrating as hell lol). With me being newbie we joked how I was Biggins. I've been doing runs on Rathian for a Plate and I got spike earlier. All I could think is "God dammit I am Biggins."

Is getting the plate worth the multiple runs though? Whenever I notice a plate as a part of an armor set or weapon upgrade I usually give, move on to something else, and end up getting it without trying.

It's really more about the old days of the series where the only way to get Plates (which used to be the rarest part) was carving tails. You see the part where the Lance guy holds it up to Rathalos' head/neck? That's a reference to Headlocking, it used to be that a player with a sufficiently powerful Lance could stunlock certain monsters (most notably Rathalos and Rathian for plate runs) by continually stabbing them in the weak point (face).
