He stated in an interview once that he originally wanted the Spinosaurus model to be scientifically accurate for the time but the producers didn't let him, so he tried to sneak in as many loopholes as he could (neutral position wrists, no fenestra outline and crocodile like throat pouch etc.) And that's the reason why most of the other creature designs look kind of decent

You forgot to mention how the butchered Elasmosaurs. They’re portrayed as fodder for Mosasaurs that get killed easily and move to Deeper water to avoid competition. (They we’re deep sea creatures, but that because the neiche was open) In reality, they were effective predators in their own right, with super flexible necks that would have been more then capable of at least badly wounding a Mosasaur attempting to attack it.

That was quite a generous and fair review, great video! I do have one correction: Edward’s Wolf wasn’t a coyote ancestor. It and the Armbruster’s Wolf were in the Dire Wolf lineage, which separated from all other canids back when Eucyon was starting to expand from North America. Unfortunately, the Dire Wolf is the only one so far to have been officially renamed outside Canis. All modern North American wolves and coyotes came here during the late Pleistocene.

A small correction. Rugops isn't being portrayed as the size of Spino's head. Also while they say it's 30 feet, it never appears to actually be that length when compared to any of the other dinosaurs. It does appear to be closer to the actual 20 feet that they believed it to be. It's tail is roughly as long as its body and head, and its tail is a little longer than Spino's skull. Indicating that the skull is around 10ish feet, give or take a few. Rough guesstimating.. That still puts Spino in the 70-120 foot range though. Which is obnoxious.

@LuigiG145
@LuigiG145 2 жыл бұрын
I know you mentioned that the _Spinosaurus_ discourse would erupt in the comments, but I feel like it is inevitable to mention the following : We literally cannot even be confident about referring specimens to _Spinosaurus_ anymore. Both Hendrickx et al. (2016) and Barker et al. 2021) make a pretty good case for that. We know that at least *3* different _Spinosaurids_ are found in the Wealden Group (Baryonyx, Ceratosuchops, Riparovenator), and we have elements overlapping between all 3 of them so the splitting of them into 3 genera is supported by evidence. The Kem Kem beds span a very vast range of time and localities, and we do not have Stromer's holotype for detailed comparisons. At the very least, we know that Ibrahim's specimen + the paddle tail are probably one animal, though whether it actually is a _Spinosaurus_ can't be conclusively said. The large snout that the body size estimates of ~15 meters comes from cannot be confidently referred to either _Sigilmassasaurus_ or _Spinosaurus_ because we do not have overlap (holotypic, or connected to the holotype) to tell us what either of their upper jaws actually looks like. So all we know right now is that 1. There is probably a 15-meter Spinosaurid from North Africa, and 2. There is definitely a spinosaurid with reduced hindlimbs and a paddle-tail, but there is no way to precisely say that the former is _Spinosaurus_ and the latter is _Sigilmassasaurus, or vice versa. Hell, if the Wealden supergroup contains 3 distinct spinosaurid genera then that makes the Kem Kem situation even more complicated.

Hypothesis: Spinosaurus used it's sail in the same way as a sailfish or marlin does. In these fish the sail creates lateral stability when swimming so the head doesn't move side to side as much, this in turn makes it easier to get your head to point where you want it when trying to catch a fish. I believe that, other than the sail, Spinosaurus essentially behaved like a crocodile and was built like a crocodile. The tail: great for propulsion underwater The small legs: bad for terrestrial life but great for being held against the body while swimming, small legs reduce underwater drag and can be tucked away. Nostrils: higher up and near eyes which are also higher up, perfect for being submerged but still looking and breathing above water, while waiting to ambush, resting or swimming along the surface (just like a crocodile). EDIT: those hands and feet were webbed

Even though this documentary has many flaws, horrible inaccuracies and in general hasn’t aged well, I’ll admit watching this back in 2009/2010 brings back childhood memories and I actually liked that pre-2014 era of the spinosaurs being depicted as the JP3, edgy Dino-monster of the 2000s until of course it was later found out that it wasn’t accurate and it does look too kaiju esque/monstrous. It’s unfortunate to see other dinosaurs either getting nerfed, misrepresented or just treated as punching bags when it ignores actual scientific research that gives a much better look at these animals (I did however like the design of the Tylosaurus featured in this documentary despite it being a little outdated). It’s not impossible to make something that’s both entertaining and features scientific accuracy with speculative ideas (Prehistoric Planet did just that).

Red Raptor if you read this can you please cover prehistoric predators because even though it might not be the best, it is one of my favourite documentaries. it is about life after Dino's with kelenken, entelodont, hyenadon, etc

Maybe instead of not comparing anything to the T. rex we should compare everything ever to the T. rex. I just want to see a documentary say something like: the quagga zebra was a lot like the T. rex but more zebra shaped and not at all like the T. rex.

As someone from the nautical history community, I feel your pain with the T rex comparison as literally time every ship is brought up in the media it’s compared to titanic

The discovery channel certainly learned from their mistakes on this when they made Last Day of the Dinosaurs that’s for sure.

Ah, I remember this series. Now I see why I focused on certain episodes such as the Terror Bird one or the Megalania one. Do I dislike this series, not drastically but I can understand the disrespect people have for it. Intrigued to see Part 2, till then, keep up your informative content Red Raptor Writes, stay safe and have a great day.

I vaguely remember seeing the first 2 episodes (and maybe the third) and how I thought the animatronic stuff was so cool to see.

I will agree with dinosaur behavior wether accurate or inaccurate they should act like normal they should act and behave like real animals , not blood thirsty monsters .

While this documentary series has its' flaws, I did enjoy the Terror Bird and Bear Dog episodes, and I still have a soft spot for the Giant Ripper (Megalania) episode. It's always nice to see the Australian megafauna get some attention.

An issue with the megalania one: a 6m monitor lizards would weigh at least double of what they claimed in the video.
