Imagine this-you're living on a tropical island, you have no threats, just living your life when one day a gargantuan hunk of wood appears at the beach and suddenly some strange, gigantic creatures start wondering the island, emiting strange noises to one another, creating fires that don't spread and leading smaller, fuzzier monsters whenever they go. Wouldn't you be curious as to what the hell those things even are?

Even back then, people knew the Dodo Bird was an exotic animal and would often keep them as pets or put them in Zoos. Eventually, all of these birds would be overfed, meaning they became fat and overweight. This is why so many depictions of Dodos are that big compared to wild Dodos, which were much more skinny. Not only explorers, but Pirates would have had some as pets since the 17th century and early 18th century was the golden age of piracy. 1630-1730 is what I go by.

Dodo - largest species on it's island. - survived many deadly drought and harsh time. - strong powerfull chad beak and legs. - able to outrun an human with ease. - had an important ecological role on it's island, making it a dominant species. - amongst the most intelligent animal on it's island behind parrots. Idiots: dodo was dumb and deserve to die. (Even there it's only fault was to be friendly toward us, and not being able to build nest out of the reach of rats, that's like saying native peoples were dumb cuz they weren't bulletproof).

It is infuriating how some people try to justify the extinction of some animals by claiming they are too dumb to survive and deserve to perish. That happens to pandas and koalas even though it is not true at all.

Fun fact: In czech language, dodo’s common name "blboun nejapný" literally translates to "crude fool", which has definitelly contributed to this myth by a large extent in Czechia.

I'm not sure what the exact source was anymore, but I read an article saying the dodo's were described as being very social towards each other as well. When a dodo was captured, sometimes fellow dodo's who witnessed it were angrily running towards the captors, resulting in them being captured as well. If that would be the case, that'd make it extra sad :(

I remember a documentary about dodos that went over everything talked about here and came to the same conclusions. Another thing they pointed out was that according to records the dodo was also rather ornery and snappish, it didn't fear humans but it didn't like them, either.

There’s a similar claim about Neanderthals being stupid and how it’s also a synonym for idiot, which is also not true as Neanderthals were just as intelligent as Sapiens.

@@LincolnPeddle Because of how lightweight it was. Quetzalcoatlus was only 300 kilograms which is really small for it's height. This low density allowed it to be able to overcome it's weight pretty easily.
@MastaBaitaAmbatukam10 сағат бұрын
@@LincolnPeddle Pterosaurs are more weight efficient flyers than birds. Birds need to have back legs that are muscular and heavy enough to support their entire body, and powerful to jump off the ground. Pterosaurs had super light back legs and used their strong forelimbs to support most of their weight when grounded. They took liftoff by using their arms to throw themselves off the ground, not their weak back limbs.

That which does not grow decays, nature only selects for what’s best for circumstances not what’s objectively better, that’s why it took billions of years for us to evolve. also there intelligence didn’t really matter, it’s that, like all birds, they have a primitive two legged gait which is inferior to mammals, that’s why almost all flightless birds live in places without mammalian predators, the only exception being ostrich’s which are so skinny they provide little nutrients for predators so they prefer to hunt other animals instead of them.

Another myth is that the Dodo was naturally fat and pudgy. This comes from the only drawing modeled off of a living bird, being that from an overfeed animal from a minagory owned by a Chinese noble.
@adamzabielski36854 күн бұрын
Based on the complete skeletons of the dodo, that myth would've been true. Because it couldn't fly, most of its meat would've been on the rump. This means that the bird would've been a horrible meal. It also explains why the Dutch named the bird 'Dodaars', meaning 'fat-arse'.
