My Dad hunted with a flintlock with a round ball, I remember him showing us the ball he found while processing the deer, it was flattened. I also wanted to say thanks for the videos and podcast! I am a women who passed on the love of hunting to two of my sons, my Dad took all 11 of us chidren hunting with him when we were children (not all at the same time😅) I hunted some as I grew up, but I have supported my sons in their hunting experience.

You need a Lyman "trade rifle" or "deer stalker". I have a .54 percussion deerstalker with a peep sight and 1:48 twist that shoots hornady conical bullets very well with triple 7. I don't think these are made anymore, but you might be able to track down a used one.

Cocking a hammer without spooking game is simple. Use your thumb pull back on hammer partially. Use index finger to pull trigger. Cock the rest of the way with thumb. Release trigger. Slowly lower hammer to resting at full cock. If you do this it is silent to go from half cock to full cock. Also when your talking about pre rev war America all flintlocks were single trigger. Also you flintlock woes could be fixed by a quality rifle. I recommend kibler if you want something period correct and of the highest quality very reasonably priced. TC and other retail flintlocks are responsible for your misconceptions about flintlocks. a quality rifle with a sharp flint and dry powder is going to go off with near 100 percent success.

At least third time heard this about using the set trigger........JUST DONT USE IT.......got into muzzle loader hunting with my dad as a kid growing up KY/OH/IN tristate then flintlock seasons in PA.. Got a few including a custom walnut beautiful flintlock. Non I've ever had or shot for that matter are those set triggers a must to actually function. The main trigger will engage just a stronger pull weight. The set can be used to set a hair trigger...so imagine taking your out of the box, modern rifle with it set at around 3.5Ib and changing it to a triggertech, with the weight of 1oz pull.

Ohio and Ontario are like that. There is a line dow. The middle, if youre over jt kn either side you nered the other license to fish. Hard to enforce in the Central Basin. 28 mikes to the middle and from there no landmarks in sight. Of course our GPS mapping shows us where we are in relation to the line. In the Western Basin, the better smallmouth fishing is on the Canadian Waters.

11:00 I'll reply on behalf of Steve's wife. The whole point of speech & debate is to teach kids how to advocate for their ideas. If you have an idea or value and your "adversaries" are well trained in debating against you, it's because you either have a bad idea or bad skills at defending your ideas. Speech & debate inside a subjective echo-chamber is not speech & debate - that's just like-minded people agreeing with each other. AKA a podcast.

I have in fact been doing the "pull method" since I started hunting at the age of 9. My dad taught me that method and he had being using that method for many years. I first heard Steve mention the "hat grip stabilization trick" years ago on a podcast, and couldnt beileve it wasn't more mainstream. It is at the top of the list for most usfeul hunting tip, in my book. The "pull" trick is definetly an added bonus to an already great trick.

I don't know what this pull method is but I pull my binoculars into my brow bone to hold steady. Works pretty good
@saxtongreer21 күн бұрын
@@Eric-dr5bjso it’s hard to explain but I’ll try. You clamp the bill of your ball cap with your hands, and then “pull” everything away from your face. If you start your hands positioned just a little further back than you want, then pull it puts tension in all the right spots, and is rock solid.

California (I know, it’s a shit place to hunt in general) if you get the California lifetime hunting license, it’s good even if you move out of state, you just pay the non-res fee for any additional tags. BUT, if you buy the tag upgrade to the lifetime license, it includes the fees on your first tags even if you move out of state…

MN has a 40 acre min landowner tag
@tjspence239021 күн бұрын
I’ve shot several deer with a patch and ball out of a percussion muzzleloader with actual black powder. If you hit a bone, the ball can flatten out and come apart. If you double lung broadside it generally goes straight through. Usually blood trails are minimal for the first 30 yards and then you pick it up. They seem to make it about 80 yards and then tip over from a double lung broadside shot. In my experience at least… With a Maxi ball (heavy “conical” that is shaped like a soda can) they generally have a better blood trail and seem to only make it half as far. A high shoulder shot will anchor them in place.

Indiana residents who own land in Ohio are granted the same license exemption as Ohio landowners. The 5 acre "rule" is not a state requirement, however certain local zoning authorities can/ do mandate acreage minimums.
@rayrosendohl719220 күн бұрын
I live in southern Illinois, we got some bullshit laws. I know a land owner that has about 80 acres. He got a nuisance permit, and in 2 years he killed over 150 deer, he said they was all does, all year long. And it was a law that you had to leave them lay,. That’s crazy to me, what do you guys think, would love to hear you all talk about it
@JohnVerzuh19 күн бұрын
I do not get what the big deal about landowners needing or not needing a tag for their own property? Just buy the damn tags! They are usually the cheapest part of hunting and provide lots of recreation for the hunter (and non-hunters too).
@craigmcvey28083 күн бұрын
Imagine you had fruit trees on your property and had to go buy a special license to eat the fruit. That's the idea behind harvesting meat. I understand both sides of the argument because those deer also wander on other people's land or public and eat. But the idea is, "why do I have to pay extra money, to eat food from my land?" I can imagine that's the big deal to landowners who pay taxes already and also have food on their land already. Maybe helps explain the other side of it. Any thoughts about it?
@jobbybohnson68182 күн бұрын
@craigmcvey2808 i would agree landowners don't need tags but definitely need limits
@craigmcvey2808Күн бұрын
@@jobbybohnson6818 yeah absolutely! Same bag limits, less regulation to harvest their own land. I'd be fine with this. But...no obvious bait and only for the landowners and kids. No extended family, friends, business buddies etc. If landowners and their kids wanna go harvest, let them.

Steve's right about a lot of stuff, but his misgiving about teaching kids to debate are misplaced. It's just teaching them to articulate their positions. In order for for us to resolve issues through public discourse, we need to get past the lower levels of debate- like ad hominem attacks- something children learn when practicing in school. We need to learn about the logical fallacies and rhetorical tricks you learn to call out in serious debate. I'm not worried about someone being better trained in rhetoric than me. No amount of sophistry will change the salient facts of a genuine argument I'm making, and I'm just not afraid to stand on the merits of the facts and the logic I put forth.
