Training hunting dogs at Hutson Heritage in Idaho and living vicariously off wonderful videos like these just barely gets me through the summer to hunting season(s)! I've been hunting for fifty years and am sorry that I didn't come up with the garden sprayer idea! Brilliant!
@UnderFortyYards5 ай бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate that! We can't take credit for the garden sprayer idea, although it's a great one, that tip goes to Robert Poor @borderland_upland I do recommend one with a wand to get under the dog, works really well. The season will be here before we know it.

Just got home here in Michigan from our annual trip to MT for Sharps and Huns. We and our dogs had a great time hunting mornings and late afternoons (midday reserved for meals and rest). Birds were up this year, both species, and in and around our favorite habitats on private ranches. Without exception, every area we hunted was very dry and fire danger high; as a result, we were very cautious in the field and careful with where we parked our truck. We had planned to make opening day, but the wx forecast forced us to push our trip out until 9/18, when the highs were only in the 60’s each day, all week. Much easier on both Brittanies and men. OBTW, I met your partner in the motel one morning as we were preparing to head out; also noticed your Raptor parked next to us…good luck!
@UnderFortyYards Жыл бұрын
Hi Jay, the weather was hot for us as we were there opening weekend. Bird numbers were good, saw birds on every walk just not the best conditions for us. There must be another Raptor out there as we were there opening week. I did want to go closer to mid month but work schedules didn't allow it this year. Hope you guys had a great trip!

What make/model SxS is that? My go-to upland shotgun is a 20 gauge cz bobwhite g2. I love the doubles!……nevermind, I see it’s a Tristar Bristol. Very nice looking shotgun. I’ve heard good things. Hope you enjoy it. You certainly appear to shoot it well. I’ve always heard folks complain about side by sides being difficult to hit with, but to tell you the truth, when I made the switch, I found that I shoot it better than just about any shotgun I’ve ever owned.
@UnderFortyYards Жыл бұрын
@@leifhoklin2681 I agree, SxSs are just more fun. I was surprised how well I shot it to be honest. It will take some time to adjust but I love the way it handles. Lighter, swings faster.
@leifhoklin2681 Жыл бұрын
@@UnderFortyYards Also, I like that’s my support hand is positioned so much closer to the bores with a SxS, as opposed to O/U, autos, etc. It seems to help me get on the birds faster. Idk if that’s true, but it feels faster anyway.
@UnderFortyYards Жыл бұрын
@@leifhoklin2681 Could be, makes sense. this Tristar has a swamped rib which I like for sight picture faster than a raised rib. But I suppose I could manage either way. The Bristol is only 6.7 lbs in 12 ga which is much lighter than most in the mid price category. Most advertised weights are always heavier in reality, but not this one, I scaled it to match their listed weight.

May I ask who bred your shorthair? How do you find they do on Ruffed Grouse? Any holes in their grouse game? If you wanted a GSP where would you go next to get the best grouse pup? Thx!
@UnderFortyYards Жыл бұрын
He's out of Shining Star GSP. I think GSPs are all around good dogs, there are probably better ruffed grouse breeds but he does OK on them. I like their toughness and durability. I can put him down on any cover and he'll adjust well. He's great on Woodcock. A fine ruffed grouse dog of any breed is a special find. Arguably a setter may have more finesse for ruffies bring more success. But the long hair is not for me. Not sure where I would go next.

Great territory- is this where the Lakota gave Custer a lesson in how not to attack an enemy with superior numbers and fieldcraft? Do you hang these birds before cooking?
@UnderFortyYards11 ай бұрын
Good question on Custer, no idea. I don't hang them, clean as fresh as I can.

Thoughts on your new Bristol? Fit, Finish, Barrel alignment?
@UnderFortyYards Жыл бұрын
It's better than I was expecting. The wood is very nice, wood fitment to action is tight but not flush, expected in this price point. Barrel action fit is very good, tight hinge no slop at all. Handles well and shoots good. The advertised weight was right on (most guns are heavier than advertised). I did have problems with failure to fire on a couple shots. Firing pin was a bit sticky, I oiled and worked that out I think. Was a light strike on the primer. Overall I'm happy with it, just plain more fun that O/U or semiauto.

Do you have to worry about rattlesnakes that time of year? I just came back from eastern Montana and had a blast on pheasants and even found an area in late Oct. where we found sharpies that flushed off my dogs nose. We limited out on sharpies on one wind break that day. Must have been 40 of them.
@UnderFortyYards Жыл бұрын
Yes but we've never come across any but they are around in September the temps are still high. 100x more likely to hit a porcupine than a snake.
