Kev Leahy is the last dot left on the tracking system for the Montane Arctic Spoine Race 2024. He is steadily but relentlessly making his way toward Jakkvikk where he'll find the next official checkpoint.
It's been tough going today. He's passed through an area where the snow is soft and deep once again, making building any momentum near impossible. Still, nothing seems to bring Kev down. Our team met up with him for a short while as he carried out some kit admin in one of the refuge huts, and found an athlete enjoying the uniquely isolated position he's found himself in.
But for our team, there's not another soul on this stretch. He has the Kungsleden to himself and appears to be thriving out there in some of the most beautiful, though brutal, scenery on earth.
He has nobody to beat.
Nothing left to prove.
The effort required is colossal.
He is choosing to do it anyway, seemingly for the sheer love of being in the moment he is in. Where we might see only isolation and hardship, Kev seems to have found tranquillity and purpose.
