Montauk State Park Trout Fishing

"Opening Day" at Montauk (March 1st each year) will attract about 1,700 to 3,000 anglers (depending on whether it is a weekend or not) from all over the country, and probably more than a few other countries. An experience like no other. Some go every year. I recommend doing it at least once; the KZbin videos don't do it justice. You can find lunker brown trout out of the park, in the 3 to 10 pound range. Some specialize in hunting these fish - find a large fish, use a white jig, and then keep working on it. They keep a "lunker boatrd" in the store, and I guess they catch maybe 20 or more over 6 pounds each year out of the park.

Your tag number 20,555 - an average of about 205 per day in the first 100 days or so. I was there March 7, missed opening day, and my tag number was 4,246 - so you see a lot in the first day and week.
