The first written sources on Montecchio date back to 1154. Located on a hill overlooking the Tiber valley, the town of Montecchio still retains the character of a medieval village intact with its small and curious alleys and mighty walls.
The history of this territory, however, begins much further away; in fact, already in pre-Roman times, the area was known and inhabited, as evidenced by the vast Necropolis of the Vallone di San Lorenzo, discovered in the mid-1800s by the archaeologist Domenico Golini.
The original nucleus of the castle dates back to around 1165 by the Chiaravalle di Todi family who retired here following the struggles between Guelphs and Ghibellines........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................

I went to Montecchio over the summer of 2023 and the people there were very kind to us. I hope you got to experience the Bar Pizzeria Dami or the restaurant Kilometro Zero, which has amazing food and staff. This was a great video to relive my time there and to see the sights and history again. Thanks for the wonderful video.

Another lovely vid, Ric! LOL @ the cats getting laid at 25:40, OMG!!!!!!!!! Being from the land of houses made of lumber, I'm always amazed at the amount of stone/masonry work in Europe. Trees grow back, but stone doesn't; with all the stone used to build italians cities, I have trouble putting things in perspective; the quarries must be huge!

To me this town looks like a museum of a really medieval town kept in original form. The stone houses and brown doors are beautiful. From the video intro I see down in the valley what looks like vinyards. The town must grow their own win. Thanks for the video.

Potrebbe essere sicuramente un borgo interessante, se non si presentasse in completo abbandono. abbiatene maggiore cura , potrebbe rappresentare una fonte di guadagno poiche' attirerebbe più visitatori.

Great STEADY video, you have experience! My background is TV & Video production, so it's so REFRESHING to see footage from someone that knows how to shoot PROPERLY! We are looking at a residence in the historical castle you shot. It can be seen in the drone footage! What is your impression of the village? If we purchased it we would love to rent it out. However I don't see a single soul, just two feisty cats!

Hi Jesse, thank you and glad you enjoy the way I try to film those tiny towns. I have always been VERY bothered by that "up and down" movements in other videos I found around... and I tried to mitigate it somehow by creating a kind of 4th axis stabilizer, in addition to the 3-axis one of the DJI Pocket. It works quite well in straight horizontal walks, a little less so in climbing and descending from stairs for instance. But I try to make it as "smooth" as possible. Glad somebody can appreciate it, I rarely see any comment about it. Generally speaking I just LOVE all Umbria to be honest, so I'm a little biased perhaps. Montecchio , as I found it that day to be honest, is indeed, as you wrote, quite lonely and quiet. I found it very sleepy, but in a good way. A kind of "retreat" from the chaotic cities for instance. Position-wise it's quite well located, actually extremely well, being near Oriveto and not too far from Todi and from the A1 Highway. A tidy town, but as you said, I found it very quiet. Perhaps it was the day though
