This movie is a masterpiece. I LOVE watching this movie, for me it is Beatty's best movie. Another great movie of the same era: Three Days of Condor.

I thought this was MUCH better, no comparison. A little too much sneaking about in the Condor, started off well but got boring after while.

Arguably the best movie score of the 70s.

" . . . he acted entirely alone, motivated by a misguided sense of patriotism and a psychotic desire for public recognition."

in Poland too, all the American movies were played on TV already in the 70s and then in the 80s we were very americanized and I think it was deliberately orchestrated from the top either as a "safety vent" to let off anti-government pressure, OR stirring up ourselves to overthrow communism because even our commies didn't like the system?

The Parallax Corporation is not in the business of recruiting assassins but patsies. It is meant to be a subsidiary or subcontractor of the big boys, the alphabet agencies of one kind or another. According to some theories, the political assassinations follow certain protocols, you have your operational management, then you have your “mechanics” if you like, professional hitmen that most likely are eliminated in some far-flung mission later down the road, and finally you have your patsies or fall guys. They can have some connection to agencies albeit in a limited and low-level capacity, just like Oswald. The crime must be “solved” in the most public fashion as to not leave doubts to its true nature and intent as far as the sheeple are concerned. Most importantly, the suspect must not make it to a court trial. The “lone nut” is a preferred stereotype. That is the western oligarchical model with its “free democratic” pretensions. The depots of the east just disappear you. It is the cost of doing business, both models have their benefits and hazards.

I'm surprised it isn't more popular than it is. Could the reason be a subtle or quasi conspiracy?

I mean. How can you question this in terms of excellence? Peerless. Check out the films of British Social Realist, Peter Watkins, by the way.
