The Elmo is the pen that made my peace with the Montegrappa brand. I love that pen! Somehow I never had a good writing experience with some of my other FPs from the brand. Until I pulled the trigger on an Elmo! İt's a fantastic everyday writer; great weight and balance as Brian said, it doesn't tire my hand; and the newer versions are a delight to look at as well. And personally, the pen feels perfect in my hand. İt's a joy to write with. I'd totally recommend the Elmo over quite a few gold nibbed pens

I got the violet and I am so happy I did. It’s one of my all time favorite pens actually. 💜 love the weight and feel, it’s nice and smooth, the color is just so vibrant and beautiful.

Brian, very nice and extended review of a pen. It is truly beautiful but when I spent $55 on my triple tail from Noodler’s I thought this would be the most I would ever spend on a pen! So I am probably not your target audience, but I did enjoy the video I think you did a great job in presentation and for those who will spend $200 or so on a pen I am sure you made a sale or two! Good luck and be safe out there!

Everyone is a target audience. :) Maybe you won't buy this specific pen, but we all love fountain pens and if new people are attracted to them, all the better! There's something for everyone at every price range, which is also what I love. It isn't "elitist" like a lot of hobbies/interests. At least that's what I think and hope for it.

I am lucky to own two Elmos, and they are the pride of my collection. I have both the Verde Altipiano (Green) and Genziana Sfrangiata (Violet). Without a doubt they are some of the most dynamic and interesting pens to look at. I know its a bit of a cliche but the pictures don't do them justice. Brian nailed it spot on too about them being great writers! Knowing that each pen is unique, coupled with their superb writing performance makes them feel special. If you're on the fence about picking up one of these pens I couldn't recommend it more. Pens and Tea has a good video on her channel, showing off the Violet one if anyone wants a closer look

I love my Elmos but they were dry writers for me - had to do some flossing and pressing to get them a bit wetter. I have to disagree with Brian - they are not a good candidate for sampling, as those feeds are complex and it takes a long time to get them clean, even using a bulb syringe. While I loved the video, I do wish in a "deep dive" review that maybe some info on disassembly would be included (yes I know, voids the warranty). I had read that the nib unit unscrews, but only one of mine will (any more force and I think I'd break the feed). However, the nib and feed are friction fit and come out really nicely. It does have a specific orientation to get it back in, so be careful, but it's easy to do. I just discovered this and am so happy, because believe me cleaning these is a pain otherwise!

Great overview! Love the Goulet exclusive versions! One question: I've seen that the nib unit can be unscrewed from the Goulet exclusive Elmo's, but can the nib unit be unscrewed from the Fantasy Blooms series as well or is that nib unit glued in?

Brain great review. It's nice to see these pens close up. I just picked up the Chrysocolla on Fountain Pen Day. I had a hard time choosing between Chrysocolla and Sea at Dusk. I usually go with either Extra Fine or Fine Point Nib. I stepped out of my comfort zone and went with the Broad nib. After seeing your video I'm looking forward to the arrival of this pen and inking it up. Budget allowing I'll be back at the end of the month for the Sea at Dusk. Depending on my experience with the Broad Nib, maybe I'll try the 1.1 Stub Nib.

I’m very fond of Montegrappa. I have several of their pens, including two Elmos. The Chrysocolla and the Sea at Dusk one. And unlike many other of Montegrappa’s customarily gaudy, over the top, overpriced pens ( I have one myself), the Elmo is understated but still stylish and elegant in appearance. And fairly affordable. Very comfortable in the hand and ideal for daily writing. I really just wish Montegrappa, like awesome Aurora, made their own nibs. Although they tune the nibs on their pens quite well, I’m hardly too enthused about the Jowo nibs. They just bore me now. My favorite Montegrappa remains their Fortuna line of pens.

I liked the review. I own the Chrysocolla. It is a very nice pen for the money. The color saturation is very appealing as you state. I am wondering about the Montegrappa Miya collection which feature the same colors but at three times the price. What is the difference in quality and build of these pens that differentiate them from the Elmos? Res they worth looking into in your opinion?

I've never spent $250 on a steel nib, but I'm curious about this pen. The colors are gorgeous, I love the nib etching, and I've never owned a Montegrappa. My two workhorse pens right now are a Pilot Custom 823 and a TWSBI Diamond 580. How does this pen's nib compare in smoothness and feedback to those two? I know they're very different pens, but I'm trying to get and idea of what it feels like to write with this.
@Gouletpens
@Gouletpens 3 жыл бұрын
The nib will probably feel closer to the TWSBI in the way it writes. TWSBI also uses JoWo nibs (like Montegrappa) though the 580's nib is slightly smaller (#5 size, compared to the larger #6). The Custom 823 nib is around the size of the Montegrappa, but it's 14k gold so if has a little softness to it, a little bounce. Smoothness is about identical, but you'll feel just a bit more give on the Pilot nib. The 823 filling mechanism is really unique, but the material of the Montegrappa is really what makes it stand out. All 3 of these pens are phenomenal though. -Brian

I wanted to like Montegrappa but I decided not to buy anymore. I noticed they were extremely difficult to clean out. There must be a gap somewhere in the section that retains ink...

Yes, I just discovered that the nib and feed are friction fit and come out easily. Doing this voids the warranty on your pen, but it's something most of us FP peeps do (Brian has some vids on it). But, when I did get that feed exposed I totally understood why it's hard to clean, definitely some odd nooks and crannies.

10,000 cycles on the clip wheel, though rugged testing, a little excessive. Likely shortened the life of the clip. Not an issue, unless you get the pen in your teens, and wake up in your 60s with a broken clip.
