The statement that one 'cannot afford it' is not always a shutdown for many but instead their immediate financial truth. Maybe they have decided to not spend for a certain period of time due to their financial status at the time and this statement helps them to keep on track with their no-spending season until they have gotten back on track financially. I do agree about looking at other means and ways that one can fund something which does not cost them anything on their end or placing it in their budget in the future if it is something they really want to do.

Thanks for your comment. I hope this part of the video didn’t come across as dismissive of peoples situations. I understand that people may not have the financial means for certain things, myself included. However, I do stand by what I’ve said about avoiding solely using that phrase. “I can’t” holds so much weight and is limiting. “It’s not in my budget right now” would be a better way to rephrase it.

Just accept the compliment! No need to reply back w/another. In turn, what you’re doing is still not completely receiving the compliment by feeling like you need to give back. When you receive a surprise gift do you give a gift back in return? That’s what it’s like for your brain when receiving a compliment. But Typically you’re surprised when you receive a compliment. I think the part of having a hard time receiving was a programming about if you do something for me, then I am obligated to do something for you. So, you feel like you don't want to owe anyone, anything. I just had a friend last say to me, I know you have a hard time asking for help, but I want to do something for you. I said OK :-))))))))))))))))) Its a process to get to a point where I feel comfortable asking for help for the simplest things. Example, I needed to changed battery in my smoke alarm, instead of asking my son or the maintenance person, I put a small step stool on top of a night stand. and did it myself, when I could of easy fell off and injured myself. The list goes on :-)))
