I lived for a year in Monterey in 1986 when I was studying at the Defense Language Institute and again another year in 1991 when I was doing clinical training at the Fort Ord Hospital. In 1986 it was nice to just walk or bicycle from my apartment two blocks above Lighthouse Ave to see the attractions. During that time the Aquarium was closed for a couple of weeks for filming Star Trek IV. I fell in love with the Wharf's chowder in a bread bowl and chocolate and nut covered toffee. Great SCUBA diving if you are tolerant of the cold water. We go back every few years. We're retired Army so we don't have a huge income. We camp with our travel trailer at a Navy campground that is right behind the fairgrounds. Always enjoy our visits.

Also visit Point Lobos State Natural Reserve, downtown Pacific Grove, and, if you have children the Dennis the Menace Playground.

Aloha Josh! Thank you for this beautiful and informative video! Due to new job for my husband, a good opportunity, he may not have the flexibility like I do for us to go back to Maui in November. We stay at the Colton Inn on Pacific Street. California residents usually stay there, convenient walk to downtown & the trolley (runs Memorial Day to Labor Day). The Portola Hotel is wonderful, but pricey. Casa Munras is still downtown & has a good restaurant/bar. There are several decent motels on Munras Dr. but not really within walking distance. There are some very nice B & B’s near Cannery Row, Pacific Grove or Carmel. There are some nice but very pricey hotels along Cannery Row.
