Good effort!! It would be easier if the expenses are given based on take-home pay; which means most employers already cover medical insurance. Also excluding the shopping like clothing which won't be done regularly. To survive in a month, here are the mandatory expenses you have to spend for 2 people: Rent - $1600 to $1800 Utilities (Electricity, Water & Trash) - $200 Cell Phones - $90 (2 connections with international calling to India) Internet - $40 (MB Connection) to $60 (1 GB Connection) Car Payment (1 car) - $400 (A decent car, it can go lower if you buy a cheaper car) Car Insurance - $150 (This can come down eventually once you build a good driving record) Fuel (Gasoline) - $140 (if you limit your travel, NJ requires a lot of drive) Groceries - $300 to $350 (ALDI is a good option if you can deal with minimalism) Toiletries - $40 Amazon Membership + Costco membership - $12 + $5 (Monthly) Renters Insurance - $8 The above are necessities to the bare minimum. In addition to the above, Eating Out - $150 (3 to 4 times depending upon the restaurant) Miscellaneous Expenses (like haircuts, going out for a coffee, Oil Change for car, etc.) - $150 Entertainment (Like Movies, Recreation once a month) - $75 These expenses are for simple living, nothing lavish. If you have one kid like a toddler and require daycare, the expenses can add up very quickly. If you are a pet lover then add pet insurance and pet food supplies. If the wife and the husband want to drive separate cars then almost double the expenses of Car payment, insurance, and fuel :) NJ is one of the most expensive states (I think 9th rank) to live in after CA and NYC due to its close proximity to New York or the tri-state area.

For a family of four, a minimum of $8500 is the bare minimum. If, savings and future including education is $10K/month. Therefore $145 K /year is a good salary meaning middle class comfortable (having freedom in travelling and entertainment) living. (145 net or gross?).

2000 for grocery not possible. You can eat at restaurant for 15-20$ per person. Even if you eat 2 meals outside everyday its going to cost 1800-2400$ for the month. Cooking at home is so much cheaper so 500$ per month for 2 should be good. Depending on what you eat it can 20-30% up or down

If you can find an apartment before coming here then great otherwise stay in hotel for few days like we did. Also, you will need to pay rent for 2 months when you sign a lease and initially also you will need money for expenses. So I would recommend to get some money when you come here. 2 months of rent plus other expenses
