does this painting need varnish? with the backround being gloss i wouldnt think it needed varnish but the flower however is acrylic only.

Hi Amanda, great question. We'd recommend adding a coat of varnish for a few reasons - it helps protect your artwork, it creates an even, glossy surface and your artwork will be easier to clean further down the track. We hope this answers your question!

Hi Sharon, some techniques are done in real time the first time they are shown, and in subsequent shots are sped up to save time :) we recommend watching the video several times before starting this project, and once you've begun following the PDF attachment and instructions Joe suggests as he paints in the video. Can you paint same way orchids with oil colours?

Hi Stiina, thank you for your question. If you plan on painting with oil colours, you would use a different approach to the one you see in this video. In this tutorial, the quick drying attributes of acrylic paint have allowed multiple coats to be built up on top of one another to reach the correct tone, colour and texture. For this to work, the underlying coat needs to be dry before the next coat is laid down. In contrast, oil paints dry very slowly so they cannot be dried and layered in the same way. A benefit of using oil paints, however, is that they blend seamlessly so you don't need to build up the layers to achieve the required tone, colour and texture. We do have a lesson about how to paint a rose in oils which shows a good method for painting flowers using oil paint.
