Phil, thank's for the mention, both sides of my family were very involved in the areas of prostitution and Shebeening in the Monto. In 1896, five people from this area were charged with murder, one of which was my great grandmother and her older sister, a row broke out about the punter not paying enough and down he went, never to get up again. All of my photos that you have used were taken by my late uncle, Paddy Coffey, I have his entire collection of over 200 photos...

That's a great story. Have you any others from that time? The history of that area seems to have been whitewashed since independence. Would love to hear more about it.

For those who don't know the Monto was a massive 'red light district' in Dublin back in the pre-independance era roughly bordered by Talbot St, Amiens St, Gardiner St and Sean McDermott Street on the northside. It takes it's name from Montogomery Street (which is now Foley street) down by what is now Connolly station. Basically Luke is talking about picking up a brazzer and lamping her out of it

Ah yes just before the 1916. Rising . And then after that. The counter revolution. As the great historian Desmond C Greaves described it ..The great irish revolution, Strangled at birth by the English Ruling Class ..
