It was New Years Day 2011 in Montreal, Quebec, Canada and I was using the metro (Bonaventure Metro - Orange Line) and heard people yelling for help. They told me that they had been stuck in the elevator for close to 45 minutes and that no-one was responding to them! I took matters into my own hands and immediately called 911 and advised the Fire Department of the situation asking them to hurry that the people had been stuck there for quite a while already. Strangely enough I was constantly told that they would send the Fire Department only if and when they decided to...? I was then passed on to the Fire Department and although I was answering all their questions to facilitate appropriate intervention... they also told me that they would only send someone if they got a confirmation from the Public Transport People!!!
When the firemen finally arrived.... they could not do anything and it took someone from the public transport to arrive and "think to shut off the power to the elevator".... allowing the doors to then open and free the people.
NB: THE FIREMEN HAD A SPECIAL KEY TO OPEN THE ELEVATOR DOOR - BUT AS YOU CAN SEE, IT SEEMS THAT THEY SIMPLY DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE IT!!! BEWARE WHEN USING THE MONTREAL PUBLIC TRANSIT. YOU ARE AT THE MERCY OF PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS - OR THEIR INACTION.
