We do water our ferns here in NZ from the top that’s why it’s a rain forest. I have lots of natural growing tree ferns in my garden and they would die if they weren’t watered from above.. Not sure where that ranger was referring too.l

The rangers advice is incorrect and the rangers aren’t really gardening experts, I grow my naturally seeded ferns here in NZ. You lightly water the tops a few times a week. The top rot is from pouring tonnes of water in the top which doesn’t really happen very often. The bases need watered but the tops are more important.
