I am humbled, I love your channel and that you referenced my walk though so much makes me really happy.

It's a great channel, and I've been meaning to replay this since I watched that walk through a year ago. I think if you've encouraged someone to go back and replay a game, even if that encouragement is delayed by a year, then you've done a great job!

@@RoseTintedSpectrum Thanks, are you still thinking of trying to complete it without save states? It is possible, I managed it but you need to get lucky with some of those crushers.
@RoseTintedSpectrum3 жыл бұрын
(whisper whisper) I may be planning on doing another 12 hour charity event next year, and using the Monty Mole games as the front runner for it. If by some miracle I manage it, I can then move onto the sequels.

I too battled with this game when I was 9. Far too hard. Excellent review mate. Really enjoyed it.

To this day I still remember taking the train to Waltham Cross, going into John Menzies and buying this alongside sabateur as a Birthday present for myself in January '85 and then reading the inserts on the way home.
@mrtiff993 жыл бұрын
I can relate to that. Great memories of getting the bus to my local Menzies, WH Smith's or Boots (yeah kids Boots sold computer games). Spending what seemed like hours pondering over what game to buy. Oh and as for Monty, too darn hard for me, love the Graphics though

I remember those were the two games I played round my friend's house, on his Commodore 64.

Commenting for the algorithm! I loved Auf Wiedersehen Monty which I think was a Your Sinclair covertape at some point? I say loved it, I only remember getting to like, screen five. When you're little you only care that games are happening, game quality is a bit of a mystery. At least that's how I was.

Brilliant, the game is totally a love-hate game for me. Nice to see Geoff mentioned too, the guy like you is a Speccy legend!

Another cracking video. we had Monty on the Run as kids, with some sort of items you select at the start. Never got too far with that either...
@RoseTintedSpectrum3 жыл бұрын
I had that, but every time you selected your items and went to start the game it crashed for some reason. From what I've seen, you have to select SPECIFIC items in order to actually win, which once again... Feels like it's giving you agency but it's actually not? It's setting you up to feel before you've even begun. The little gits.

Back in the day I cam nowhere near completing ANY of the Monty Mole games - but that didn't matter, I had a blast playing them. They were / are tough as nails, but getting just one more screen further was always something I'd enjoy.

Impossimole was my favourite Monty Mole game, although it was absolutely savaged in Your Sinclair magazine.

Brilliant video!!! I hated these games with a vengence lol! I just don't get on with "you need this crazy random item to destroy that crazy random item that kills you" shenannigans...

I played some of one of them for the first time the other day via a GBC port and it was surprisingly good. Got to a point where i couldnt find where to go though but i had fun with what i played! Edit: it was Monty On The Run!

I don't think MoTR had a linear route (or I managed to still get lost despite it) 😂 Which was the sequel? The items here make this look newer but I think M:OTR was newer and set after this story wise?

This is one of my favourite reviews I think. The algorithm suggests an RTS I've seen and I watch anyway as enough are absolutely delightful like this one 😍

The original Monty Mole is one of the few Speccy games that I actually completed legitimately. The random crushers were evil, and I must've done that nasty screen with the wall in the right order by accident, but the game's really not that bad. It's only 20-something screens long, and as long as you pick up everything you'll always have the item you need to "defeat" whatever's in your way. I think my only gripe with it now, being older and surlier, is that the game's politics have a strong Thatcherite stench - caricatures of pot-bellied picketing miners and evil union leaders in their castles, cruelly preventing nice folk from getting their coal, as if that's what the Miner's Strike was all about - but of course I was blissfully unbothered by such stuff as a schoolkid 😆

Monty Mole and Miner Willy are both characters i cant believe an indie studio has not licensed for modern games. 80s hero falls into the modern world and discovers new mechanics and gameplay. Could be a great platformer.

Man it must of been mint to work for Crash magazine, because to give a score like that ..like one of the colleges I've been to, there was always a random drug dealer at the entrance of the building.

Loved Monty Mole! I watched a play through and realised I didn’t get very far in the game as a kid. I always thought you need to pick up an item to not get killed by a baddie. As long as you don’t use your item on the wrong baddie you’re golden.

Never played any Monty Mole games except Moley Christmas. It probably is a good game from the perspective of the time it was made as it will keep you occupied for a long time. It does not care how sane you are once you are at the end but then do many zx Spectrum games?
@pedroamaralcouto3 ай бұрын
Probably many programmers were the QA testers and played with higher lives and reduced them before release without testing again. I doubt the developers and testers could finish those games fairly.

Excellent video. I think that's why Monty Mole was written back then. I hated it instantly and wouldn't play it again for a second. Round here we call those sort of things "una hijoputez" (and we had a load of sonofabitch developers so...).

Exploration platformers were fun for children but playing them as actual games is awful. Just got to the bit of the video saying there is a linear route. Hmmmm. so far im going to play this post video!

Great video. I thought it would put me off by the end but actually want to play this now. I always thought Monty Mole was a JSW maze game and dismissed it

@arostwocents use the poke to make the crushers non-random and its a solid playthrough without any bullshit
@burbercat3558 Жыл бұрын
I'm gonna say it, Monty Mole isn't a good game and your right it's just spiteful and uses unlogical rules to purposely make you lose. When the magazines got review versions I'm pretty sure it only got such high scores as they had 9 lives or more to play with which is going to make the difference for the early reviews. It's unfair and I hope Monty gets scurvy.
@nigeltrigger44999 ай бұрын
Nah, nobody from the 80's actually completed the game!
