The urn kick is a PRIME example of their genius. They slow down to a serious bit, about audiences not laughing, and Terry Gillam, the python no one ever looked at, is the one to kick it over. And after the cleanup, Cleese goes IMMEDIATELY back to his place in the story and finishes the point.
@tommyt19712 жыл бұрын
Yup, and the point was that you didn't need to put the punchline at the end of a line or a joke -- you could get a roiling laugh from your audience at any time!

Monty Python's humor was unique. I doubt you will ever see its like again, because I don't think we will ever see assembled six minds of such creative lunacy. I don't think some people realise or appreciate how incredibly clever these guys were.

There is a phomenal cue at the kicking the urn. Right before that second, Cleese just finishes telling a story and saying .."the audience didnt laugh ". and then bang, Gilliam kicks the urn and the audience is roaring with laughter.

When Gilliam knocked over that urn, I swear I couldn't stop laughing for 20 mins, missed a lot of the following jokes. My brother & mother thought I was crazy but -- aside from Cleese's biting eulogy to Chapman at his memorial service -- that was the funniest moment the guys ever had post-Graham.

I was just watching a *Geographics* video by Simon Whistler about the U.K.'s secret nuclear bunker, during which references to Monty Python were subtly added, due to one of the bunker's many code names.

It is funny about the Hobbies. I had a 13 year old kid once who I put on his Basketball card (which he is literally the player on the card): list of Hobbies as I had to fill it out because he was (after repeated reminding) did not do so, and it needed to get done (aka he was lazy). I wrote for his hobbies: Playing Basketball, Playing Video Games, Not Cleaning his Room, Making messes around the house, and Eating (especially Hot Cheetos) He was not happy about that when he finally got the deck of cards with each member of his team and looked at his own card. Everyone got a deck, so everyone saw those cards. The reaction he had was priceless. I filmed that. It is a cherished memory.

Idle's trying to pile the ashes under the rug, Gilliam's making an even bigger mess with the dustpan & brush, Palin's trying to scoop them back in the urn with the lid, Jones looks aghast and stamps them with his shoes and Cleese actually rubs some of them on his teeth like they were cocaine. Honest to Christ, these guys couldn't be funnier if they TRIED.
