Was in Jaffa Flea Market in Tel Aviv two weeks ago and was buying a decorative chain of gourds(!) for the grandkids to get musical sounds from. The vendor wanted 70 Shekel - so i took out the money and he said - OK you can have it for 50. But I was quite happy to pay 70 I said but he said he expected me to "ding" but I'm too British to do so. In the end I got it for 40 Shekels. Nothing seems to change much in the past 2,000 years this part of the world! Same wars - same people. Very happy with my gourds which hang from a wall - a bit miffed though to find a label saying they were made in Turkey!
@jackxiao9702 Жыл бұрын
That’s hilarious. Like he expected to haggle to 35 (it’s almost automatic at this point), but felt bad, didn’t want to feel like he was cheating you totally so went down to 50. It’s like our health care system in America but more fun.

I was in a shop in Cairo, and I asked about the price of an object. The guy said it was 100 Egyptian lira (which back then was equal to about $20). I suggested 60. He got a strange look on his face and said 55. It was now my turn to have a strange look on my face. I had no idea what was going on. Obviously, he thought I had said something much lower than 55, but I didn't know what, so I wasn't sure what price to suggest, so I just said ok. After all, he had met my price and even gone below it. Afterwards, I figured out (I think) what had happened. He was speaking English, and I was trying to speak the Egyptian dialect of Arabic. I said 60, which in Egyptian Arabic is sit-teen, and he heard it as sixteen. He probably thought I didn't know any Arabic, and that if I did, it would be Modern Standard, in which 60 is sit-toon. So, there was just no way he was going to hear sit-teen as 60. If someone has a better explanation, let me know.
