According to legend, this entire scene was basically improv. The loud, slightly disembodied laughter isn't actually from an actor. It was the cameraman, who couldn't keep it together any better then the Romans.

@1977ajax
@1977ajax Жыл бұрын
You clearly have no idea how films are made. The team may have 'improvised' somewhat when they originally wrote the scene, but the filming is strict to a script, with only very minor variations on the day. Microphones could never pick up sounds from the filming crew; they are specifically concentrated on the actors alone. Maybe it's better not to parrot out junk just you've overheard for the sake of it, when you have no idea if it is pure b/s or not.

Oh the comedic roller coaster. The tension is nearly unendurable when Pilate says "He has a wife you know...". Then comes the line "She's called Incontinentia", where the soldiers (along with us, the spectators) are off the hook for a brief moment. It seems like the storm is over, and the soldiers are safe. Only for the punchline to hit twice as hard. The 3-second interval of hope between 3:59 and 4:02 is what elevates this scene to legendary status.

Some assume it mocks Christianity but from what I gather, it really mocks the Jews particularly back then. Monty Python must have thought, "Well the Jews did not believe Jesus is the Messiah when he said he was what if they believed some random dude is the Messiah and he says he is not and still think he is?" One more, thing the funny part in this scene is not the "questionable humor," it's the actors trying not laugh whom were told, "If you laugh, you will not get paid!"

I still laugh at this scene though I've seen it so many times! I'm Aussie, but married to a lady from Mindanao Philippines and living there. We speak Bisaya (Cebuano). To my complete astonishment I recently came across a version of this scene dubbed in Bisaya! I fair dinkum laughed my tits off! There was no way to get the names "Naughtius Maximus" and "Biggus Dickus" to be understood in Bisaya, but, hey, they did a great job with funny Bisaya names, and I learned some new words! In the Bisaya version, Brian says his father was a "barangay tanud", a local area official who helps keep the peace. This was actually pretty much what the Roman soldiers were doing in Judaea. When asked for his father's name, he replies "Richard Bangoton". "Bangoton" in Bisaya means "moustached", but the root word is "bangot" which means "crotch hair"! In Bisaya Pilate says his friend ("ang akong amigo, ang akong higala") is called "James Kabahog Bugan". "Kabahog" means "stinky", and "Bugan" means "groin"! I love the Bisaya version just as much as the English one!

Imagine reading the script for the line said at 1:30. You would think he was saying "your father was a WOMAN"!

This might just be the funniest thing the Pythons ever did. First time I saw this I couldn't stop laughing for a half hour & missed a lot of the following jokes.

The scriptwriter(s) had a lot of fun putting as many Rs as possible into Pontius Pilate's script. Stwike him wuffly indeed.

It's tremendously hard to even try to pick one Python as being the funniest, since they are all so hilarious, each in their own ways. But with a gun to my head, this one scene might have elevated Palin like 1/10th of a percent over the others.

"He has a wife you know..." and you could see the guard to the left blinking and mentally shaking his head, most probably saying, "Oh God, no, please help me"

Classic Monty Python. Michael Palin has always been my personal favorite of the group. Silence then..."He has a wife ya know." The two guards are like, Oh chit!
