Actually as a Brit I can say that, if one replaced the sensible party with the very silly party, it would be like the modern Labour vs Tory Party: One party is obviously insane and incompetent, the other is also obviously insane and incompetent. Whoever hides it better wins the election unless there's a referendum on, in which case the opposite occurs. American politics are more like The Batshit Insane Party who believes that Muslims cause cancer vs The Rich Arseholes Party Who think that basic human decency is communist. Which party is which is determined by how many people with any sense don't bother to vote at all/ whoever screams the loudest. Basically, the way our votes don't matter is different from the way your votes don't matter.
