This scene is brilliant. The whole movie is brilliant. As is The Life of Brian. That movie caused a big stir when it came out. British MPs wanted to ban it. Monty Python itself recently said that they could not make a movie like that in the current political correct climate and they certainly could not make something similar about Islam. Satire is being persecuted everywhere under the banner of political correctness and sensibilities. Well, F your sensibilities. Long live satire!

Trust the circus to drop profound truths and then distract the viewers from them immediately and then do so for the duration of the film. To top it off, they tell the viewers that's what is going on before they go about doing it. Such irony is lost on most, but to the enlightened, it is brilliantly hilarious. When it comes to hats and religions, please reference George Carlin. ;)

@@videosuperhighway7655 Maurice Nicoll, Psychological Commentaries on the Teaching of Gurdjieff and Ouspensky Volume 3: Now I return to the "hat". That part of the invisible psychology or psychological body of a person that is connected with how he or she thinks is the "hat"-the thinking-cap. The head thinks-so its covering is what clothes it. A person thinks from what to that person is truth. You think from what you take as truth. What forms of truth you have been taught and accept constitute your "hat". So it is a legitimate question to ask a person, not only: "Why do you think this or that is true?" but "Where did you get that hat?" which equals the question: "Why think like that?" The answer is, of course: "Because I was brought up to think like that". Yes, but another person, brought up differently, thinks in another way-that is, wears another hat, of a different colour or a quite different shape. And so on and so on. Yet each thinks he thinks aright and each thinks he thinks from absolute truth. So everyone wears a different hat-an invisible hat, because it belongs to the invisible body-that is, the person's acquired psychology. Cleese is well acquainted with Nicoll's work.

I know it wasn't meant to be the "True" meaning of life, I did find what they said to be very profound. Not many people are wearing enough hats.
