i dont think the writers did very good with him since he was put in the same situation twice and did different things even though he doesnt have any character development regarding it(Alex pulls a gun on him and he doesnt care, but when alex pulls a knife on him in s3 he's scared)

I think he wasn't scared of the gun because Alex tried to commit suicide with a gun but ended up surviving. So he assumed that Alex wouldn't be able to shoot him. He even said that to Alex that "he couldn't even shoot himself" in the gun scene. His father abuses him with objects, a nightsick and a hammer that we know of. He may be impulsivly more scared of something that's not a gun because of that.
