Hello, which methods are there working with a corpus? I am writing a term-paper about a single word. I wanted to analyse its usage (gender, age, social status of speakers), meaning, grammatical categories it is used with, its collocates. Maybe its development through the ages. How can I do it? Thank you!

What software are you using in doing Corpus Linguistics?

Hi Darren. We use a range of corpus analysis software - some of which was developed here at Lancaster. Amongst others, many of our researchers use CQPweb, Wmatrix, LancsBox, and AntConc. Find out more about some of the work we do here: cass.lancs.ac.uk/ ^Mathew

How to create my own corpus?

Or do you have a software wherein the researchers can make their own corpus?

Hi Darren. Wmatrix allows users to upload their own corpus (providing it is in the correct format). There's a lot of tutorials on the website that you should be able to follow. :-) ^Mathew

I am analyzing negative and positive emotional words from 19th century text. Which corpus tool should be the best I can use? so far I use LIWC, is there any other software out there better than LIWC? I am analyzing gender and race as well for my project. I don't think Antconc can work with with my project because it doesn't give me any score on each word from part of speech such as pronouns (I, you, she, etc) negative emotions, articles, etc.

Hi Richard. It depends what you're trying to do - I'd recommend giving Wmatrix a go, as that comes with a built-in USAS semantic tagger which might be useful for you. There's plenty of tutorials available on the site to see if it's appropriate for you and your research. :-) ^Mathew
