Very informative. I used your method and set-up with herring rig I used after watching a video from Angler West TV. First time out produced a very nice Silver from Coos Bay; my first out of the Bay after three attempts. Also liked and used the leader storage idea; good stuff. Better to be schooled than skunked...thanks for the tips.

This is a *lot* different than we do it in California, at least where I am, near Bodega Bay. We try to minimize line angle, and we don't cut the head off the bait, we thread it differently, and we put the bait (usually an anchovie) all the way on the bottom. Drop the rig down and then crank up 5 or 6 times. And to the person saying downriggers/trolling works better, in my experience that all depends on the conditions. If the fish are spread out, trolling usually works better. But if they're schooled up, as they are around me later in the year, mooching kills it. But that said, some days the trollers will get more fish, and then the next the moochers, then the trollers again. Such is fishing. But the moochers will have used a lot less gas and a lot more finesse, in my opinion at least.

Try using 15 pound Maxima for the leader material. Your hook ups and landings will improve dramatically. Also it is wise to drop the bait towards the bottom much more slowly. When dropping fast the leader will often wrap around the main line.

I've been trying to mooch here in the puget sound, and more often than not, when the bait hits the bottom, I get hit by a bullhead or dogfish. What am I doing wrong?

I know just enough to weigh in on your dilemma. As I found out the same way as you did, there are times and places in the Sound were the dog sharks and bullheads are so irritating, the locals use only spoons and hootchies trolled or jigs jogged so as to alleviate losing their bait to said marauders. Read Fishing in Washington by Frank Haw. (Printed in the 70's). As i said, I did the same thing you did at point defiance up there before I figured it out.

Thanks for the reply and reading suggestion. Man, you nailed it, as I've been fishing outside of Gig Harbor, over by Vachon, and the Pt Defiance cliffs. I'll shoot you an update if my luck/skill improves. Cheers!

What was that rod?
@alaskawilderman3 жыл бұрын
Lamiglas is the brand of rod he uses. I am also an Alaska resident angler and this rod is very popular here. Be aware however, a Lamiglas is easily broken due to dropping the rod or banging it against a boat or rock etc, it's a great rod for fishing but poor in terms of durability.
