I love this song! K.S.O., another Moody Blues song that I think you'll really like is "Question" (released in 1970), which has a drastic tempo and melody change; a very interesting composition. Also, there's another song on the same album as "The Voice" titled "Gemini Dream", which I think you would enjoy.

The 'Long Distance Voyager' album was a big hit for Moody Blues. Lot of good tracks. 'Meanwhile' was a good track too. As I said, it was a big seller for MB. The Wikipedia seems to think this is their tenth album, but some of us know that the band itself don't count the first album (with Go Now) so this is in fact their ninth album ( 7th= Seventh sojourn, 8th = Octave). Their next album was 'Present'(1984) and the present on the cover was an X (10th album). I have wondered if there was some indication of number 9 on the Voyager album, but haven't discovered it. Maybe someone has?

Of all the great and wonderful songs by the Moody Blues, this one is my favorite. This is the song that kicks off the "Long Distance Voyager" album and it's one of those that has no bad song on it. Love, Love, this song and this band. This is another beautiful, magical, yet powerful song from them because of the message it conveys, which I believe the Voice is from within. I believe they are saying that no matter what we experience in life, especially during the darkest times, we must follow the voice within us and not to any "voices" or opinions externally from other people, campaigns, marketing, etc. That true voice within will guide us to the Light and ultimately Love, happiness, peace and harmony. Great reaction and song.

The mellotron was what they used - it actually used recorded instruments that were stored and played back from tape. It was a British version of the Chamberlin which was created much earlier. The instruments could be changed out by changing the tape set being used. So instruments like flute, violin, cello, etc were recorded to tape as note samples. When a key was pressed the sample would be played. Here is a video explaining how the instrument worked: kzbin.info/www/bejne/eKqnaZp-bNCMrtU

You won't be able to get through "For My Lady" without crying. Its one of their most well love songs. The LIVE version from 1992 at Red Rocks is just as good as the studio version, and you get to see a crystal clear video of them at night outside at the beautiful Red Rocks amphitheater with a full symphony orchestra. Its MAGIC!

I have been a die hard fan since 74 and have been to 5 concerts with the one in 2001 at Paul Masson Winery in California to be my favorite of all the concerts by any band I have ever been to. An 80 year old man on one side of me and a late teen on the other side of my wife. We the audience, sang every word to every song with ushers dancing in the isles . Just them with no back up Orchestra. They span generations with their style. I still have the jersey from then. I agree with "For my Lady" being a soulfull love song. Great reaction. The Moodies do take you to a sonic landscape, an inward place, where you can connect to your deeper dreams and yearnings. You put your finger on that. I’ve been listening to this song since it came out 40 years ago, mostly because of the music-how the keyboards, guitars, drums, flute and strings work together. Lyrically, I think it is about being at a crossroads or decision-point in life, and feeling uncertain, and asking “the voice within” to speak more clearly to you about which way to go. I’ve never tried to study the lyrics to determine the meaning; this is just my “felt sense” of what the song is about lyrically after thousands of listens. I can’t think of a finer rock song.

I interpret this song as what they say...' the voice within ' very literally as the voice inside yourself saying I have to go forward...I have to keep going. We lose people along the way...especially when you get older, it's inevitable. They can't stay...you can't go with them...we will meet them later but now we're carrying the torch...they're hands are around yours as you move forward. I have a bias as I always love Justin Heyward's voice...such a sweet tenor. When I hear him sing it's like he's standing right next to me and I feel comfortable and content. Thank god he's not in sales because that voice would make me buy whatever he's selling :)

Not long after it came out I was sitting in a mall parking lot in Yellow (black int) Firebird formula sweating in the summer heat with the windows and the music up! The car belonged to the salesman of course. The system was Alpine and shortly thereafter my car stereo was worth more than my car. Fun. haha Each and every rising sun, is created by the lonely one... Incredible how word salad like that can be so full of meaning when music is added. Many song lyrics can move you and give you a level of communication beyond the words themselves which, out of the song, are complete nonsense. ha ha.. yeah I love listening to your lyric interpretations too and agree with you on this one.
