Wow Brett! That was such a powerful testimony. I think it so important that these oral histories get shared--both our true story & our more "light-hearted/humorous" versions. Thank you for sharing this.

We have another thing in common. My wife initially received multiple positive results, though they wound up being false positives, but it helped me get over my irrational fear of HIV. I still have the rational fear, because I would rather not be sick, like anyone else. But it's not a "don't look at me, you're poz" now.

OMG how terrifying!!! I cannot imagine...I'm so glad they were false but wow, what a scare...

First you are so ridiculously beautiful. Most beautiful face I’ve ever seen. 3 months after I lost my partner in the south tower on 9/11 I got deathly ill with full blown AIDS. My mother was supportive when I came out. But she was an angry RN who was disgusted with me

I cant speak on HIV but I have bpd and Jesus... what a dramatic existence. I feel like I constantly carry the wrath of hell inside of me. I want to unleash it on the mortals but I also have a very tender side that I've learned to hide bc ppl just dont care.

I can. Not many people know about my status and for a good reason, which is the stigma it carries. I always knew it was very stigmatised, but prior to my diagnosis I had no idea just how much. It felt like having to come out all over again, only this time it isn't about my sexuality, but the fact I got infected with a virus that people still think can spread through non-sexual physical contact and so they avoid everyone living with hiv. The worse part is that people living with hiv are at a real risk of losing their job, their connections, social status and maybe even their relationship. The idiots screaming "sick bastard" and such aren't capable of really affecting me, but the dangers of people potentioally losing their livelihood because of people's ignorance about the virus is something that keeps me feeling bleak and sometimes very angry at the world. People like me (monitored, taking their meds daily, having an undetectable viral load) are physically incapable of infecting people with the virus through any contact at all. The antiretroviral medicine we take every single day can't kill the virus, but it suppresses the amount of it to such low levels that the virus can't multiply and can't attack the immune system (which is the purpose of this virus). We pose no threat to others and we aren't less healthy either.

While your attempt to be encouraging, positive, and supportive of gay men IS admirable, well intentioned, and ideal in concept, I'm afraid that unfortunately it's ultimately a disservice to the community in general. It's an unrealistic statement, a wishful thought painted by a broad brush. I'm not proud of that sad reality. It truly pains me to say such. We simply can't afford to give bigots oppurtunity and ammunition. They wouldn't have any hesitation or qualms about taking it. I'm sorry Dubon. 💔
