The carrier oscillator in the Moogerfooger Ring Modulator can be reset by an outside audio source. Here it is being done with the Moogerfooger FreqBox (with additional voltage control!) and an Etherwave Standard theremin.

This shows off a very central concept of Moogerfooger design. If you have two Moogerfoogers, you not only have the features of each, but you have a third set of features that spring from the comb...ination of the two. For each Moogerfooger you add, your sound-sculpting power grows exponentially. Great use of the Etherwave Theremin in this one as well!

The end part is totally whacky and fun! Great sound demo!

Moog makes its own expression pedal, the EP-2, which can be used with the Moogerfoogers. To my understanding, though (anyone else please correct me if I'm wrong!), the expression pedal has a TRS ("tip-ring-sleeve") plug. Moogerfoogers are designed so that if any one TRS cable is plugged in (EP-2 into a Freq. control, for instance), no other CV jack will work, period. This is a safety feature designed to protect the circuitry.

Nick, I've been watching your videos for over an hour now. You're videos completely kick ass. Really educational, sometimes hilarious, very experimental and occasionally totally rock. Please keep posting when you can! Totally awesome stuff here!

Hey, thanks! As of January 2017, I'm on hiatus from producing new video content. I'm in my junior year studying electrical engineering at the University of Washington, and I'm also getting married soon--those two things mean ZERO time for video editing or playing live music. Maybe I'll get back at the KZbin thing in a couple of years. Cheers!

Ah, thank you for the speedy reply. I'm dead set on getting the MR-102 (and some others) and I was hoping I wouldn't have to lean down to twist some knobs to get some crazy sounds

wow! now that is a REAL guitar synth... i hate how a lot of brands sell you enevlopefilters by saying "guitar synth"... so moogerfoogers have control voltages... wow, the cp251 must be a must-have!

@penguinrock Yes, you want one!! I have a dual oscillator bass guitar synth board, and finally plugged a MIDI keyboard into the MP201; controlling the freqbox's and a lowpass as oscillators and using a Gate or ADSR Envelope (new firmware) into the Ringmod's Carrier In as VCA-- quickly turns my bass guitar synth into a keyboard monosynth! You could do it with your Freqbox&Ringmod, using their Osc Outs instead of Audio Outs. :)
@Spaghettaboutit15 жыл бұрын
@penguinrock Actually you can use the MP-102 as the expression pedal, it can do Midi to CV and all loads of shit, aside from their synths I'd say this is the best thing they make.
@dontbelievethahype14 жыл бұрын
@penguinrock Another trick with the MP-201 and Ringmod Carrier In: In Expression mode with the CV to the Carrier In, the Ringmod acts as a Volume pedal with full volume at about 2.5v-- with a full 5v you reach unity halfway in the sweep, and then back to silent at toe down for manual tremolo tones. If you use the MP201's LFO's into the Carrier In, you effectively have Tap Tempo/MIDI sync-able tremolo with multiple waveform choices. The MP and CP are must haves in a moogerfooger setup!

@rediculus08 Yes, there is a Rate input on the back of the ringmod, you can change it with control voltage.

hey nick, what are those red guitar patch cables you are using? i love how they don't block your other ins and outs.

If I remember correctly from when I filmed this 2-3 years ago, for whatever reason the SYNC function didn't work when the two pedals were hooked up in this manner. I left it out, but perhaps I should have explained or demoed that instead.

@penguinrock The EP-2 also works, just isn't nearly as good at the MP-201 :D

I failed to mention, I tried running the stereo output from my Boss DD-20 Giga Delay into the Ring Mod's Carrier Input. The tone begins to snowball fast as the Ring Mod is fed into the delay, which is then fed back into the Ring Mod... Then I tried it with the PS-5 Super Shifter, which gave me less than desirable results.

@TenebrousSounds Stick the Phaser or Ring Mod in the 104Z's loop to get some crazy delay repeats! Or use the Ring Mod's LFO Out to control the Mix, Rate, or Feedback of the 104Z...? I don't have the Phaser, YET. I actually ordered the Moogerfooger Analog Delay upon hearing that they would no longer be made, but I wound up canceling the order. Had other gear on layaway I needed to pick up. Maybe I'll own one someday in the future...

@penguinrock trying to control the LFO rate in the pedal using an SH-101, or even a sampler, basically im just looking to get the LFO on tempo with other equipment. Would you know anything about that?

*correction* MP-201 Multi-Pedal... I definitely want one.

Why not set the Freqbox to SYNCH to get more of a tuned ring mod effect? I just thought that would have been a neat addition to the video.

hello . on my freqBox the output jacks look different than yours ?from left to right it goes like this audio out -env out-osc out- on your video it is look like that audio out than osc out and than env out from left to the right ! what is wrong yours or mine freq box jacks Frieder

why is the Pedal tracking at 1:30 is this because the Mix is not all the way up on the Ring Mod?
@NicholasGreenwood12 жыл бұрын
@MrCandleBurner Just normal patch cables.
@NicholasGreenwood13 жыл бұрын
@electronicpoision You're right, mine does read Audio, Osc, Env, from left to right. If I'm not mistaken, the bottom row of jacks are "point-to-point" wired rather than extending directly off of the circuit board, so it would be easy for Moog to make a change. There is nothing "wrong" with this. My FreqBox has a relatively low serial number, 1768. What's yours?
@NicholasGreenwood15 жыл бұрын
I tried what you suggested by switching the order of the Ring Mod and FreqBox altogether. Turns out, the Oscillator Out from the FreqBox stays exactly the same, i.e., the Osc Out does not reflect being in sync with the guitar's tone, even with the pedal on (and Mix knob down). ...But I like what you're thinking!

Does the synch function on the freq box Vco have any effect when it’s routed into the ring mod?
@NicholasGreenwood14 жыл бұрын
Can you be more specific? Are you trying to control the LFO rate in the synth, or in the pedal? Also, what kind of synth are you using? I still don't own any synth of my own at this point, so I think it would be better to leave this question for any another synth aficionado to take on....
@rediculus0814 жыл бұрын
I just got one of these, and have been having alot of fun, well worth the money. However I am wondering how would I be able to control the LFO rate with a synth using control voltages?
@Slekkevet13 жыл бұрын
What happens if you turn the SYNC on while you send the VCO into the ring mod? This is the one thing I was dying to know, but you didn't flip the switch! Aargh

@dontbelievethahype: Thanks for the tips! You should be making demo videos! The CP-251 is still on my wish list... And I ask myself, just why did I buy a Playstation 3 instead?

Can you use an expression pedal with Moog pedals?
@thesskep6894 жыл бұрын
are you using stereo or mono jacks for the carrier out etc...?
@NicholasGreenwood4 жыл бұрын
I'm confused by your question. If you mean TS (mono) and TRS (stereo) cables, then it's all TS cables interconnecting these here. However, the Moogerfoogers can take expression pedals like the EP-3, which have TRS cable ends.
@thesskep6894 жыл бұрын
@@NicholasGreenwood Sorry for the confusion. You answered my question: TS cables can be used, but when EPs are involved then TRS. Many thanks!
@NicholasGreenwood4 жыл бұрын
@@thesskep689 I need to make a distinction here--the Carrier In, Carrier Out, and LFO Out jacks on the MF-102 are audio only (TS cables). Probably not a good idea to plug a TRS cable into them. Be sure to double-check the individual jacks on any other Moogerfoogers + other gear you may have.

always a big fan of these great pedals - but why does most of the stuff going through all that great gear come out sounding like sour Rockman recordings on old cassette tapes? Ya know? Waiting to here .... something majestic. Just sayin' for all that potential sonic firepower ... results usually nasally, wow and fluttery.
