A netrunner is someone who travels the net using either a cyberdeck or interface plugs. Netrunners are very capable hackers and can traverse the net with ease. Netrunners usually specialize in hacking enemies rather than traditional combat with guns or cyberware. Most Cyberpunks or Edgerunners who are netrunners do illegal things such as steal valuable information or cause mayhem on subnets such as a building's network or a company's network.

So now that you are at episode 4 at least, some minor backstory: Night City - founded by Richard Night was meant to be a beacon of capitalism (you can see how that went) located in real world Coronado bay in cali. The US as we know it is splintered between The New USA, the free states, and some states that fall between. The world runs on big corporations (Corpos) like arasaka (japan), militech (usa), kang tao (china). the currency is the Eurodollar as the european economic community became a power house after the fall of the old usa (note that alot of what u see in cyberpunk was from the 80s tabletop game so pretty good on some predictions). You may hear the term ‘old net’. What we know as the internet today didnt survive fully in their world after a netrunner named Rache bartmoss released what he called RABIDS and it corrupted 70% of the net in a day. In night city with the corruption, pollution and crime most people will likely die young and if you want to make money, you either gotta go into a gang (like the tiger claws from episode 3), join a corpo (but most feel like that is selling your soul to the devil), or you become a edgerunner. edgerunners fall into a kinda gray area where they arent good or bad. They are mercs for hire. Edgerunners fall at least in respect to the series into 3 categories: 1. Fixers like faraday get the job from someone looking to have something done and the fixer will find the merc(s) needed. 2. Solos - maine, pilar, dorio, and rebecca fall on this - think hired guns/muscle. 3. Netrunners - lucy and kiwi fall into this. Rather than muscle and guns, they are hackers. Lucy being in a ice bath is a cheap way to cool her body when doing a deep dive into the old net. Deep dives will lead to cyberware overheating and killing the person ( roasted inside out) Lucy at show start is 20. David is 17. Some people will cringe at that but in many other countries today, consent is 16-18 and given the average low lifespan of the average night city citizen, you can probably let that slide. Only in their world could you just be minding your own business when a corpo hit squad, gang turf wars, cyberpsycho attack, or just plain starvation will kill you. Its why brain dances (BDs) are popular. Reality stinks. Escape reality

Love this anime, was amazing. The game is also great and made better because of Edgerunners because you can see all the locations from the anime so it brings a new element to the game that it didnt have previously.
