MOON KNIGHT: Every Clue That There's a Hidden THIRD Identity in the Show

Moon Knight's first two episodes have introduced us to two of the hero's alternate personalities: soft-spoken gift shoppist Steven Grant and hard edged mercenary Marc Spector. But if you pay attention, there are actually three identities in the show. Marc would not have gotten a date with Steven's co-worker, or killed his fish. So who is the third alter? We think it's straight form the comics--cab driver Jake Lockley. Except, Jake may be far more violent and dangerous than anyone ever dreamed.

The first two episodes of moon knight have introduced us to two alter egos for the hero: lovable civilian Steven Grant [clip] And the other dark, brooding, assassin Marc Spector.
But, if you look closer at n the first 2 episodes, there’s numerous hints that we have actually been seeing 3 personalities, not 2. That’s right, there’s a hidden character and you missed all the clues. You know Marc and Steven, but we’ve already been introduced to Jake Lockley without knowing it.
So we’re going to break down all of the clues that you missed so far. First, there are a lot of symbols all having to do with the number three. Pyramids and triangles are a huge motif in this show.
Sure-but even the secret cut-out in Steven’s apartment wall was a triangle, with three sides. Every scene where Steven’s next to a mirror, he is surrounded by 3- The elevator, dressing for a date, and the museum bathroom. When Steven walks through the gallery, we have the trailer shot where he walks off and the reflections stay - but instead of one, there are 2 other reflections. Finally in the credits, Oscar Isaac has not two but three faces cut out.
But these aren’t the only hints. We’re just getting started.
First let’s go over what we know about Steven’s day to day life.
He starts off as our protagonist. He’s a sweet, quirky, caring awkward British guy fascinated with Egyptology, and wants to be a Museum tour guide.
He’s meant to lead a happy quiet life with his daily routine- feeding his fish, calling his mom, and going to work. But through his day, a lot of things just don’t add up.
Steven wakes up confused, feeds his lucky-finned fish Gus, and pins postcards sent by his mom. He tells her voicemail, indicating he hasn’t actually spoken to his mom recently.
While he’s at work as a Museum gift shop cashier, his tour guide coworker reminds himSteven has no memory of making a date-and even sounds surprised at the CHANCE to date her. Apparently he’s taking her to the best steak in town, but as his supervisor Donna asks [what's a vegan gonna eat].
When doing inventory Donna mentions which seems a bit strange to me. If this is his daily routine to work, he should know the bus schedule by now. Donna calls him lazy-but he doesn’t really seem the type to slack off, considering he’s vying for the tour guide position. He’s friendly with the entire staff but the security guard keeps calling him Scotty.
After work, he mentions to the living statue that when sleeping, [body wants to move, wake up wherever] which could explain why he feels like he got hit by a bus when he wakes up in the morning. When he leaves, he says [see you on the flip flop] a clear nod to his switching identities.
We enter his dream in Germany which obviously shows the audience that Steven’s identity is only one facet of his being, especially when he hears Khonshu’s voice in his head saying [hand the body to Marc]--who is a more experienced fighter.
Steven wakes up in relief because, [alas twas only a dream]. Everything’s normal, until he sees Gus. [yesterday 1 fin, today 2 fins]. The clerk says he was there yesterday, which he wasn’t, and then-greatest tragedy of all he loses his weekend.
He comes home, finds a secret phone and keys hidden in his walls, and a man in the mirror saying. After getting chased by a demonic bird man, he just suddenly wakes up on a bus.
By the beginning of the second episode, Steven becomes aware that there is another identity inhabiting his body - Marc Spector. He sees a different version of his face in the security cameras and is willing to seek out help for his Dissociative Identity Disorder. So let’s talk about DID, so we can understand this hidden identity that we’ve been missing all along. [clip]

I like this theory and had similar thoughts while watching the episode. We all know Jake is in the comics as the 3rd identity and from what we see of Marc, he’s not likely to be the one maintaining Steve’s life with dates and postcards from mum. Marc doesn’t even seem to like Steven at all. But Jake? He’s a simple cabbie who doesn’t have the trauma Marc has. He’s the healthy middle ground between Steven and Marc, so it makes sense he’s the one doing things to keep Steven’s life in order.

This might be a bit far-fetched, but I'm really hoping we'll be able to see another unique suit to fit Jake's personality, like how Marc has the classic suit, and Steven has Mister Knight. This is a really interesting theory that I'd like to see play out in the show.

Very plausible, even likely. I was hoping that a part of Jake was looking out for Steven but it makes more sense he was messing with Steven. If Steven is Mr. Knight and Marc is Moon Knight, does this mean Jake is just a selfish jerk with no other identity? It makes sense.

there is definitely a third personality as in episode 1 when steven wakes up in germany konshu says "you are not supposed to be here give control to mark" and then says "oh the stupid is in the control" meaning konshu thought he was the third personality who might be aware of the marc and steven identity and about being an avatar but kosnshu later realise that steven is in control refering to him as stupid !

I had not noticed this so I went back and watched, and I think this is the most glaring evidence Jake is involved. Along with what you laid out, there's Konshu's dialog: "surrender the body to Marc". As if Steven should already be aware of his own DID. Jake's playing middle man, Marc hasn't mentioned Jake to Steven because he doesn't want to further confuse Steven and send him into more of a spiral. Bravo.

I think Marc actually cares for Steven. If Marc had created Steven to research Egyptology and also protect his wife it would make sense he’d do things like replacing fish and send post cards from his estranged mum to allow that identity to continue. When Marc try’s to comfort Steven about the feeling from inside the mirror he shows genuine compassion and try’s to calm Steven. If Marc is telling the truth and he’s being dealing with watching Steven from the inside for, “a long time” it’s likely he’s grown sympathetic towards him. Marc may have even seen a more compassionate and innocent side in Steven that he doesn’t have.

100 agree! Marc doesn’t mess up Steven’s life. If anything he takes account for it by only changing and taking control when Steven is sleeping. He could easily just show Steven that he was there from the start by not putting all the traps back when going to bed but he doesn’t. He fits the norm which makes me think that Marc isn’t bad necessarily more so used. I think Jake would be the evil or “prick” personality. The personality that would mess with Stevens head such as the “Scotty” theory.

Also.... Marc loves his wife and is going to great lengths to protect her. I dont think he would've been hitting on other women. Also also the storage unit is immaculate. Clean, organized, soldierly. He's not a slob and there's no mention of him liking to drink. This personality we see at the end has the room thrashed and he's clearly been on a bender. Very uncharacteristic for both Marc and Steven Also also also... If Marc already had plans to go the Alps to steal the scarab, why would he plan a date in the first place?

Ok but think about it, nobody is talking about how Marc is very likely the one drinking in the last shot and ripping up his room because he was doing everything he can to stay awake so Steven couldn’t get control and mess up his mission, just like Steven tried to do with his cube and studying in episode 1. The broken mirror and furniture might be a result at mark dealing with Steven annoying him and mark getting extremely frustrated like when he burst that glass in the park when Steven was first put “behind the mirrors”

In the last shot you can actually still see both personalities. Steven is in the mirror sitting on the bed holding his bloody fist as if he’s been the one punching the glass trying to get out and then there’s Marc sitting on the floor with his legs straight out having a drink.

Interesting points! For the first, I do think it is possible that Marc just wanted to create the illusion that he has moved on from Layla, to protect her. Why exactly he arranged for them to have a date at a steakhouse is the only question I get from that. Maybe Marc doesn't know Steven is a vegan, since, as he said before, until recently things had always been pretty seperated between them. For the second point I agree with Chicken Girl. I think his room is trashed to show their recent struggles (Steven wanting to go home and Marc wanting to finish the mission) and how things are sort of falling apart. The last point does make me doubt if asking the woman out was actually Marc. The only way to explain that would be to say that he only after asking her out discovered the leads to an oppertunity to steal the scarab. Tomorrow the next episode will come out, can't wait!

So here's the thing; the information provided is representative of what SOME people with DID experience, it is not representative of what MOST experience, and there is a growing understanding in psychiatric circles of DID as a spectrum, and bureaucracy and regressive biases are slowing progress, as they always have regarding psychiatry. Also, the definition given is inaccurate as well, as alters typically represent splits that occur as a result of (typically) childhood trauma. Entirely separate identities can emerge, with little or no direct knowledge of each other, at least first, but so too can less formed "personalities modes" that are typically 1 or 2 dimensional, and have no real separate self-awareness. Also, memories can be shared, to varying degrees, although typically in such cases, shared memories are the strongest memories, moderate to major in importance, whereas the identity that formed them typically retains greater recall on the finer details associated with a given memory, and memories of lesser importance or impact. There can be a physical expression of switching, but there most often isn't, which can be especially unsettling for anyone who witnesses a switch between very different identities, such as family, friends etc. Yes, sometimes alters can be actively helpful, and others harmful. Some alters are protectors, nurturers, or simply know they're an alter, and use their ability and knowledge for the good of the core identity, and/or all identities. And sometimes identities are assholes, emotionally abusive, rarely even physically abusive or predatory, but the last two are very rare, and in fact people with DID are far more likely to experience abuse, than to abuse others, and more than 70% attempt suicide, whether as the core identity, or as an alter. Some people experience lost time, others experience warped time. Some identities may possess knowledge, skills, or interests that others, or the core identity, don't. They may have different foods they like, music they like, etc. Identities can possess different genders and sexualities. Sometimes, a person experiences a form of trauma regarding their own thoughts or feelings, and may reject them, and sometimes this can manifest as an alter. Every person's experience with DID is different, and it's expressed differently in every individual, though there can sometimes be commonalities. A person can have a single alter, although this is rare, or a few, several, or even dozens, in rare cases. What we're seeing in Moon Knight, is at one end of the spectrum, and does not represent the breadth and complexity of the myriad expressions and experiences of living with DID.

That's a good theory. Just remember that DID is usually the result of severe, sustained trauma. If Marvel's gonna delve into the backstory of the character, it can't be that he just woke up w/these alters. The alters are a maladaptive coping mechanism. We need to know what his own mind was trying to protect him from.

Since we're exploring the DID route, am I the only one who thinks that steven has more chances to be an alter? I think normaly alters comes from childhood trauma but what if mark's death caused him to create an alter based on what he loved about layla, that's how I interpreted the scene where steven and layla discovered they had the same interests

It's because Marc died and he confirmed it. And then he started to behave differently creating different personalities but his trauma was so damaging that those creations became DID. At one point he lost control. For example as Ryan said on previous videos: Batman is the real guy, there is Bruce Wayne the billionare playboy party man that no one would think he is Batman, and there is Bruce wayne when he is with alfred or with the league moments before suiting up. Those are 3 different personalities of one same person. In this case Marc could have begun like this but becasue of the trauma of actually dying he lost control

There is however one clue you missed. In Episode1, Steven gets away from the Jackal in the museum’s bathroom, The Jackal is pounding the Door to get in, {Steven First hears a Distinctly different him say, “Steven!” From his ‘Right’ side and looks that way to see himself arms folded one way, Then hears a distinctly different voice from behind him, on his ‘Left’ side, say, “Steven... I can save us..” which is Marc, arms Folded in a complete different way than the reflection in the Mirror to Steven’s Right. Then from that point on, Steven only talks to the reflections to his ‘Left’ or behind him opposite the door being broken through, he never looks to the ‘Right’ again.} I think the reflection that’s to Steven’s Right, that first gets his attention when the Jackal is trying to bust through the door, the one we only see for a split second, I think that’s the Third personality in Marc/Steven’s body, What ever the show decides to name him...

Mark is the one mostly keeping Steven's life 'normal'. He's a trained operative and knows how to maintain cover. He also promised Konshu that Steven wouldn't be a bother or get in the way.. or even know what was going on. Mark is the one doing cleanup after a mission, (re-taping the door and re-doing the shackle) AND after Jake goes on a bender and allows the fish to die..

Yeah as someone who has a dissociative disorder myself watching episode 1&2 everything points to Marc keeping him safe. He talks Steven through his panic attack and he is doing as much to protect Steven as he did his wife. Which is really lovely but also very much how DID does tend to work. They have muddied the original alters a fair bit so I think Marc being a protective alter makes sense. It’s just that Konshu’s bullshit doesn’t work on a good schedule and Marc’s body does have to have some sleep to function. His alter’s aren’t super Powers. Also fun is that Marc is a trained boxer in the comics so Steven pulling the boxer stance and getting a good hook in could be showing the mixing of the memories and such now that Marc has let the wall between them down somewhat. I think the post cards were from Marc to get Steven to call his ‘mum’ who is really Marc so that he can keep tabs on Stevens life since they don’t communicate.

One of the more confusing parts for me is why Stevens coworkers don’t comment on his accent, but that honestly suggests to me that Jake does just like to mess with Steven, and he puts on a British accent when at the museum. He knows he’s a vegan and chose the steakhouse on purpose, and he also knew Steven would probably miss the date and it would just cause him disappointment. STEVEN WITH A V

There was another part in the last episode where Steven and Marc were fighting side by side with Harrow and his men. Marc switched his personality and everyone on the ground died when he switched back to Marc. Then he asked Steven "Did you do this?" He said no, Steven and Marc were both confused of how it happened and Layla said "What did you do?" That is a definite proof of a third personality which is the most brutal one, existing in the body.

2 things. 1. Layla speaks THREE languages in Steven's apartment. Harrow says they all learn 3 languages. Layla either IS or WAS working for or with Harrow. Maybe even his gf given the look they give each other at the end of episode 2. 2. When Steven wakes up in bed in episode 2 and runs out of bed and hits the ground, then talks in the mirror? That's NOT Steven. He is surprised he's locked in the bed, so it's obviously not Marc, bit when he talks in the mirror, he had no accent. That's the third personality talking.

In the first episode when konshu first communicates with steven he tells him to give the body back to marc. Only after steven responds does konshu say 'oh great its the fool'. Implying that konshu thought it was not steven or marc.

I wonder if laylas voice matches with the voice on the podcast in the first episode. The statements in the podcast and the stuff steven is looking at while hearing them pretty much foreshadow the shows events. My theory on this is kind of difficult to sort out but basically steven is hallucinating a great deal more than we realize and there are people trying to keep him that way because he is easier to manipulate (not just konshu). We see signs of this but have no idea how deep it goes. Sleep deprivation can cause hallucinations and steven seems determined to deprive himself of sleep. Who knows how long he has been doing it. This effort on stevens part greatly undermines marcs efforts so surely his enemies would empower steven to keep interfering with marcs goals.

Also forgetting the most obvious hint when Steven keeps appearing in the mirror when Marc is trying to figure out where Ammits tomb is. Marc dissociates and then regain control only to find the men around him to be completely beaten up. This is not Steven who wakes up to Marcs violence but are we really meant to believe Marc wakes up to Steven violence, we are to believe that Steven took control and did that to those men? There’s no way, it most likely was jake. especially when Marco says “Steven what the hell did you do” to which Steven replied “me? I didn’t do anything”. Again highly likely Jake was the one who took control and beat those guys.

One thing about DID that some people tend to forget about is that not all alters are aware of each other. I believe Marc was the one who was actually trying to help Steven maintain a normal life and for the longest time Steven was unaware of Marc's presence. Jake definitely was the one that called that coworker on a date and told the other coworker that his name was Scotty to mess with Steven. When you put it all together we can figure out that Marc was the "original identity" and that he was aware of Steven, Steven on the other hand lived most of his life unaware of Marc. Now that they both are aware of each other it makes sense to think that its only them, but in reality I believe neither Steven or Marc are aware that there's a third alter, Jake. Jake is definitely going to be the darker and more dangerous one out of the three of them just based on the scene he left after he took control of the body during a fight in a later episode. As someone who is extremely interested in DID I was shocked at how accurate this show portrayed what is like to live with this disorder (of course ignoring all the magic and fantasy), they gave us the reason why Marc developed the disorder, all the trauma he suffered that made his young still forming identity to split, they showed us who Steven Grant was based on, a character from a movie he watched a lot as a child, which is something that can happen in a DID system, an alter based on fictional character. And I cannot express how happy I am that they didn't make Konshu one of his alters or had an alter with super powers, because that's just basically impossible to happen, DID doesn't give people super powers and I love that they made it clear that the only reason why Marc and Steven had these powers was because they were Konshu's avatar and without Konshu they were just regular people.

As someone who has DID, I approve of the manner that Oscar and the crew are addressing in the show. The main thing to remember about DID and those who deal with it 24/7, everyone's system of alters is very unique. You can't compare any one system to another. My system is quite unique and has changed over time, because I, as the owner of the body, have changed. For the last few years, I have been in control most of the time. It didn't start that way, but I became stronger and didn't need my alters as much as before. The other thing to remember is that there is no cure for DID. It may seem to diminish a bit, but as the owner/host experiences another trauma, it's certain that the alters will take control again. I've been dealing with my alters ever since my Junior year of high school. I'm now 54 and most of the time, my alters don't bother me. They even allow me to handle difficult stresses in my life. One of them basically told me that I can handle tough times on my own now. He's still here, in my mind, but he's quiet or sleeping. All my alters are male, which is rather unusual but not unheard of. I am very glad about the show and how it depicts someone with DID. Thank you for portraying it as something other than evil or criminal.

Both the 3rd episode and the 4th really support this theory. Edit: Same thing with 5th [SPOILER ALERT] The 3rd: Someone killed everybody in the beginning of the episode but it wasn’t Steven or Marc. Both Steven and Marc didn’t really think about it because they thought the other person lied.The person who killed everyone could have been Jake. The 4th: In the scene where Marc frees Steven from the tomb thingy, there is another tomb that was shaking. Both Steven and Marc just ignored it, but I think that was Jake. The 5th: During one of the parts where “Marc” was speaking with Harrow, it probably wasn’t Marc. He had a cut nose and Boston accent (or maybe not Boston, I’m not good with accents). He also threatened Harrow with the glass pyramid. The other times when it was Steven and Marc they never had a cut nose or did any of this. And the 6th basically proved it

I had the same Theory, posted yesterday, with additional ideas. Maybe the Security guard calls him "Scotty" because Jake Lockley speaks with a Scottish accent. Also Lockley is an Anglo-Saxon name which is now Scotland. And Khonshu knows Jake, because he says "Oh no, the idiots in control" knowing it's not Mark, but calling him the idiot because Jake will most likely be "The Ass hole" which is also not Mark.

In episode 1 when Steven wakes up after stealing the scarab khonshu says surrender the body to Marc.... which sets up that khonshu knows that Marc's not in control, but then he is further disappointed that of all the alternatives to Marc, it's "the idiot" who gained control. As though any other identity would have known what "surrender the body to Marc" means and would have done so.

I think that all of the evidence you've put forward still perfectly falls in line with Marc helping to take care of Steven's life. he doesn't want Steven to worry about these gaps in time or weird things that don't quite make sense in his own memories so he sends these postcards and he gets a replacement fish and he tries to give Steven a good life by occasionally asking out a pretty girl.

I think Marc might replace Gus and (maybe) send postcards to keep Steven from finding out about the DID, but setting Steven up on a date with a co-worker seems like a huge risk considering the likelihood that Steven would be confused and start to pry into the situation. I don't think Marc would take that risk. I think Marc cares for Steven by trying to keep him in the dark and protected. I think it would be a nice twist to introduce Jake as the source of the date.

I think Steven (with a v) is the amalgamation of the person Marc wishes he was for Layla. There's subconscious influences (same favorite poet, interest in the languages and ancient history) and he literally he says he would never leave Layla. I do think there is a third personality but I doubt that's the person we're seeing in Cairo at the end of episode 2. The idea that Marc is disciplined isn't substantiated and when put up against his violent outburst towards Steven trying to take control back ( he smashed a mirror out in public in the middle of the night) makes me think we're still seeing Marc at the end of episode 2. I do however think the steak dinner suggests there is a third personality likely Jake who is a version of Marc without a sense of compassion. I figure the end of the show is reconciling and sharing control across these three personalities through more of a symbolic interactionist approach.

Ok but think about it, Marc is very likely the one drinking in the last shot and ripping up his room because he was doing everything he can to stay awake so Steven couldn’t get control and mess up his mission, just like Steven tried to do with his cube and studying in episode 1. The broken mirror and furniture might be a result at mark dealing with Steven annoying him and mark getting extremely frustrated like when he burst that glass in the park when Steven was first put “behind the mirrors”

I'm wondering if Jakes own "suit" Might be Moon Shade? I know the comics version is weirdly tied into The Magus and such, but if they were to reinvent it and make it a little more elegant and connective, his powers are actually a nice paralell to Arthur, being someone who absorbs the life force of others to kill them, but he especially ties into the current MCU really well because he's actually kind of Kang-ish, in the sense that what he does is hunt down other versions of himself across the multiverse. I think as you and others have pointed out, Jake is going to be the one you DON'T want in charge, the dark ID, what happens when a gods Avatar embraces their purpose far too much, like Harrow.
