Hi, I teach English in Oslo Norway. It is extremely rewarding but also quite challenging as I have students with mixed competency and I have to adapt my teaching style and my vocabulary to each student. For example, I have a 10-year-old student who is almost fluent in the same class as a student who is a complete beginner and the rest of the class can be anything in-between. If you can give me any tips I'd appreciate that a lot. By the way, so far loving your videos and I find a lot of inspiration in them. Good job!

Thanks for another great video! Was just thinking about the advice and lesson plans, what are some unspoken things the Chinese TA's and school would want you to do or not do, given that most of these are unspoken and expected of you.
@MooncakeEnglish
@MooncakeEnglish 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nathan, thanks for watching! I'm not quite sure if you mean things that are expected of you from the TA's or things you expect the TA's to do for you while in the class? I think most TA's biggest concern is the safety of students. Sometimes the ESL teacher has some fun ideas that involves students getting excited, standing or jumping etc. But if the teacher doesn't manage the student's energy well during the activity and calm things down after the activity, it's easy for students too get hurt. So communication and safety planning is important. Before my classes I always let my TA know what I will be doing and what I expect from them. I always have them sing and chant along with me and encourage students in their native language if students aren't joining in (not translation or explanation, just encouragement). I hope that helps!

Hello, if possible, please! I really need your help. How to teach complex grammar to young children? My students are between 8 and 11 years old, they are not able to read and write properly. I will give you an example: If I am going to teach "Present continuous", I think it will be easy for them to learn the structure using simple verbs, that we only need to add "ing", but things get hard when we need to explain complex rules of verbs termination. So that, should I focus on the main structure for now, or is there a way to go deeper into this subject?

Hi Jema. Firstly, great video tips, I've learnt a lot from them. I'm looking at looking getting back into teaching after 7 years being out from it (I had been an Cadet Force instructor for 13 years, teaching 12-18 and some adults, so have a good idea of lesson plans, class layout, and interaction etc...), but for me, I would like to get my TEFL qualification and teach abroad, but have realised it'll be a different ball game to what I'm used to. So my question is, how would you start/structure your very first lesson into teaching English/Introduction to the English language. I am potentially looking at the 4-18 year old age group!?
@MooncakeEnglish
@MooncakeEnglish Жыл бұрын
Hi Warren, thanks for watching and welcome to the Mooncake community! I'm so glad the videos have been helpful 😊 Great question, but a little tricky to answer. You seem to be teaching a very large age range and the approach to teaching a four year old would be very different to teaching an 18 year old. In fact, teaching an eight year old is also very different than a four year old because of where children are developmentally. Generally speaking, my goal with my first few English classes with students is to get an ideas of their English level, and to have a fun and enjoyable lesson. Especially when teaching younger kids, you want to give time to make a connection so that students can relax and have fun while learning. So, I would prepare a larger variety of material so that you can adjust if you find your student is a higher or lower level than you expect. Try to also choose topics or activities that you think your students will enjoy. As I mentioned, its a hard question to answer directly 😂 but I hope that helps!

I've been teaching my brother for a couple months now, and I feel really lost about how to teach him the grammar and vocab, I mean I am kinda fluent in English and I'm able to understand quite a lot, but I have zero experience in teaching, and so far what I've done is just sit him down and read him the grammar, make him do some activities and that's it, and even thou he learnt a lot about the verb to be and is able to say a couple phrases, I feel like I could teach him in a more fun and dynamic way, I'm still trying to figure it out, and is a little stressing bc I really want him to enjoy my classes and learn English but it's hard to teach and I really want to do it right or at least more fun.

@@MooncakeEnglish Thank you! I think it's one of those things in which I'll rapidly improve. I'm definitely not as nervous as I was on day 1. My main issue is running out of content in the first 45 minutes when classes last an hour and a half 😬 Let's, uh... let's play several games.
@MooncakeEnglish
@MooncakeEnglish 3 жыл бұрын
@@nightknight7208 I used to have that issue too! Now I try to have a ‘circle time’ structure where we go through the same things before the main topic. For example, self intros, weather, days of the week, date, etc. although we do these topics every day we build upon the language constantly. For example, self intros might start with ‘my name is’ or ‘I’m five years old’ but later over time change to ‘for breakfast I had cereal’ or ‘after school I will play with’. That way the lesson is structured so kids know the routine but there are always new things being taught. Then your main subject doesn’t feel like it needs to be stretched out as much. I hope that helps 😊
