In 1970, I worked at UPS. They had yard guys that put trailers into the docks. They often put 2 trailers in one door. You would see them pull up and beep beep then back they came. Always got it right the first time. You could not fit a broom handle between the trailers. I'm still amazed to this day.

They're still like that. UPS has such a high standard, and they train drivers intensely, and ultimately they can do really hard maneuvers that most drivers will never encounter.

I did my road test with the same setup as in the video. KW900 super 10 trans with a 53’ dry-van. I have no CDL but I have a ton of practice at this I am a full-time Yard Switcher at a Distribution Center, we never leave the yard so no CDL required. If you have a big Distribution center in your area try to get a Yard Dog job it is a great way to get paid to practice moving trailers around and learning how to do a pull through, and button hooks, 45 and ally docks or button hook away from parking space so you can straight line back. Lots of practice I move 75-90 trailers a shift. Good exercise too climbing them 3 steps up to the truck and walking back to open swing doors and kick chocks. You also learn how to hook up gladhands and operate the airbrake system valves you learn what it means to slip a king pin or fail to couple and almost drop a trailer "even though you tugged it and it passed the tug test." cranking landing gear and if you are lucky you will get to move around pup trailers as well fast reacting little terds they make 53' look easy.

When you back up to ally dock get about 15 15 on each side of you and pull up 90 feet from your nose to where your backing when you start backing up turn your steering all the way to the right and start moving back watch your surroundings and keep an eye on your landing gear and the back of your trailer. Once you see the second foot of the landing gear go about 2 3 inches past it and you will be about 80 85 90 degree position once your angled to the right position counter steer back the way to straitin your trailer. try to do it on the side you can see your trailer on. Blind side sucks but still achievable

25 years of cdl driving and I DO someone to explain why backing is being taught with only 2 pullups. No shame in several pullups. The real shame us standing there waiting to file the police report after smashing something with your trailer . Then calling your safety guy and explaing it to him.

In Florida, we literally have like HALF of that distance in this video to do a pull up. It's seriously like 5 feet before the examiner screams at you and stops you in your tracks!! Not to mention where we are doing our testing is at our fleet maintenance facility, which is an insane place to do testing.. tons of traffic coming in and out, fire trucks, dump trucks, people and everything of the sort is a distraction while testing. It's actually ridiculous. I have failed alley dock twice as of today.. getting very discouraged with it. I have completed the test both times but got too many points. I swear the distance you can pull up in this video, looks like a country mile compared to what we are allowed to do.

My driving and downshifting is good. I'm just 50/50 on the 90° backing. Hoping I luck out on test day. Glad to hear you passed man. It's encouraging

I never learned to alley dock in my training but honestly it's way easier to do than offset/parallel parking if you ask me. Just remember that you're driving the end of the trailer into the spot. Move slowly and correct/pull up as you go. You always want to use the actual end of the trailer as the point of reference, while also paying attention to your tandems and your drives to make sure you get in straight. You want your tandems and yours drive tires to be in line with each other AND the cones/lines by the time you finish parking.

in the situation of alley dock you can get alittle more room on the cones to just don't hit em you'll do fine

Yea, except you have nowhere near that much room in an actual parking lot or truck stop....10x harder when you are trying not to damage a $200k truck on either side of you
@heinzkitzvelvet6 жыл бұрын
TjThaReal13 That's when you slide the tandems back. There's WAY too much ass hanging off that trailer. That's the quickest way to hit something.

This back would be a whole lot easier with your tandems set back all the way.
@heinzkitzvelvet6 жыл бұрын
Jeffrey Whitworth Absolutely! It's better this way in a controlled environment where you can only destroy a little orange rubber cone. But I think students should practice with the tandems in a more realistic setting. There's a sweet spot for those tandems, about 13 holes up from the back, that makes the trailer a dream to drive AND back. I know weight distribution doesn't always allow that, but when you can, it's the best spot.
@jeydub85416 жыл бұрын
I have only been driving 17 years, but I am still learning. If it's tight, I slide my tandems all the way back since some shippers/receivers want them slid back anyway.

I set my tractor about 10ft from box and wheels about 8ft over shooting the box. Turn right all the way and back until your 90 degrees. Push the trailer until it’s about 45 degrees into the box and then get under it guiding it in. The way they show it here seems more complicated 🤷🏼♂️
