While I haven't gotten much feedback about speed, I know that sometimes I put quite a lot of information into a concise video. I always want to be respectful of people's time, so I prefer to make videos as brief as possible. I also have some limitations on how long I can comfortably talk for, but I'll try to listen to get the right pace. Thank you for chiming in :)

thanks for the stirring tip...hence the reason I guess that my moonglow in my pan...looks NOTHING like swatches...no separation nio granulation...no nothing...big let down...think I am sick and tired of D.S. paints...except a few pigments...which are exceptional...in granulation...like Genuine Burnt Scarlet Genuine, for example. Catching up with youtube (such an annoyance - they used to send an email for those channels you have a subscription for with every new video that appears - I miss those emails, hence I miss - read: don't see / have to catch up much later etc. vids- ) This one must have slipped through finding it only after so many months. A great one. You analyze these (and other) paints with a surgical lancet. I love this criticism :) and I learn much of it. Thanks again, for doing this. As for Paul Rubens... I don't find a colorchart from all their paints (the way DS have). PR also is not easy to buy in Europe. And from the little I saw till now: they're chock-full of typo's, other mistakes, omissions etc.

In my opinion Moonglow is warmer and Artemis has a cooler undertone . They are both beautiful but I prefer warmer Moonglow 😊

I was interested in the Artemis when I got the email about it over the summer, then I saw it had the same red in it 😄 Oh well. I'm going to get some viridian and mix my own. The only green I have is pthalo green BS. Might try it tomorrow anyway to see what it does.

You can achieve a very similar color with Phthalo Green instead of Viridian... but it does not granulate the same way as viridian so you will have some differences in texture and color separation. It may be a useful test because it's probably still beautiful :)

Just a warning about the Roman Szmal version - my swatch card faded to almost nothing in the space of a few weeks - and it's normally in a folder that's in a cupboard. I touched it up thinking that perhaps I did something wrong with the swatching, but it faded again despite the lack of sunlight.

Very interesting, I'll keep an eye on mine. Is this the only swatch you have had any issues with? Sometimes I have had my color charts fade when the sizing/surface coating goes bad on my paper, which was really the worst with Bee brand. I had the paper basically absorb color, instead of properly sitting on the surface and staying saturated. Thanks for the heads up!

@@KimberlyCrick so far, it's the only swatch I've noticed that's gone through such a drastic colour change. Even the neons haven't shown any kind of change and I know they're very notorious for fading. I typically use Bockingford paper for swatches, and occasionally there's an issue with the sizing, but it normally shows in the form of a coin sized patch and nothing bigger.

Wow I love how in-depth you get with your color mixing tests here! Do you think it would be possible to DIY a mixture of Moonglow using Quin Rose instead of Quin Coral? Also, would Ultramarine work instead of French Ultramarine, you think? I haven't actually bought any Daniel Smith Paints yet and I am debating about which tester sets to purchase. I absolutely love the effects of the granulation and color separation in DS paints so I'm eager to try them. Thank you!

You will have some degree of success with any cool red, any ultramarine and any viridian. However, the color separation will be less dramatic with a less dramatically granulating ultramarine (ie non "french" ones) and the neutral purple will lean a little more towards royal purple because of a slightly cooler red being used. It will still be a lovely mixture, just a touch different. If you have a pretty granulating viridian it would help carry a less granulating ultramarine. I like M. Graham, Daniel Smith or Roman Szmal the most for that. Happy painting :)

Did you add ox gall to your water in the mushroom painting segment? Or did all the paints race like that?

I have never added ox gall to my water or paints, I like to appreciate the way each company makes their formula. Some smooth light weight pigments race quite quickly without it though, fast disperse vs slower heavy granulating ones in wet washes.

Can you use Daniel Smith Jadeite or Diopside in place of Viridian when mixing your own version? Those are granular. I have tried mixing my own substituting Quinacridone Rose or Permanent Alizarin Crimson for Anthraquinone Red with some good results. Also does this work better on rough paper than on cold press?

Both cold press and rough press work very well, with hot press being the least suitable for showing off granulation and color separation. Diospide and Jadeite are a much stronger green with a large portion of non-granulating bright green mixed in with a smaller amount of granulating darker green. It will not behave the same way in mixtures as Viridian, but it may be still beautiful in a different way. The non-granulating part of Diopside will cling to the cool-red more, causing brown tinges in a Moonglow-like mixture. If you own it, no harm in trying, but it is not a replacement for the more gentle Viridian.

@@raymatthews4319 Daniel Smith's Perm Alizarin Crimson is a multi pigment mixture that includes pr177 anthra red, so there will still still be some minor fading over time. It has a good amount of PV19 (often called permanent rose/quin red/quin rose) in it, so it's more stable with less drastic fading than with full pr177 pigment, but it's not perfect. If you're looking to avoid the lightfast problems you can use any stable cool red like PR122, PV19 or PR209. Happy painting :)

PV23 Varies by brand. I haven't seen any fading in Daniel Smith or Qor, so those ones seem lightfast. Dioxazine Violet can have slight chemical differences between brands so some people will see fading due to a different pigment source. I'll have to check my LF tests to see which brands are the worst.

as on handprint, PO73 is actually listed as a lightfast color. So was wondering why shadow violet from DS would be fading

@@Chen-sl9ev Yes, PO73 fades. It is less than PR177 in long term uv exposure when severely diluted / in tints. It is a stronger color in masstone than some commonly fugitive colors, so it evades lightfast testing problems unless in specific scenarios such as this. When a tiny amount of PO73 is used in a mixture, some forms of this pigment (certain brands may be more stable than others) fade over a long time of daily window light. This would mainly only be a problem if you have art hanging in an office building with a lot of natural light coming in from large windows. PO73 diluted fades on a rate similar to LFII to LFIII, where as the PR177 in Moonglow fades more dramatically between LFIII to LFIV. Unfortunately handprint has not tested all colors in all tints and is getting pretty out of date for new findings at this time.

For all the work that companies put into making their paints, it seems like someone could come up with a red for the moonglow that isn't fugitive. And with the color separation in the moonglow tube, maybe they should only offer it in a pan version. Has anyone tried mixing a sub using DS amethyst genuine? I'd love to try but can't afford the Amethyst right now.

It's more complicated than you'd think, since paint makers don't make the pigments themselves. They buy ingredients (pigment powders) from a chemical company. There's not a ton of good transparent reds with high lightfastness, only a dozen or less that are commonly manufactured. Then cost, toxicity and pigment properties like being gritty, granulating or providing the effect they're looking for comes into play. I've talked to Roman Szmal about this and it's been a challenge finding a good replacement for PR177 that will still result in beautiful mixtures. He is slightly improving it though with a new supplier for PR177. There are a couple chemical colorant manufacturers that make more or less durable versions of PR177, Golden/Qor invested in a more durable one than these other brands - it takes a couple more months for theirs to start fading. I'd suggest that the paint companies use PR209, but it is apparently easier to work with on the palette for us to DIY mix prz.grey/moonlow replicas, since it doesn't play nice in the mixtures at the factory on a large scale (like the tubes, sinks/settles in the vat). I agree about the moonglow tubes from D.Smith though, they are definitely less problematic in the dry pan.

What do you think about mixing something with the amethyst genuine, since it has a sort of red/violet cast to it already? Maybe the color separation wouldn't happen with the amethyst? Since Amethyst has a little sparkle and grit to it, the resulting mixtures combined with ultramarine and viridian may be really interesting. There's no light pink in Amethyst though, so that part of the color separation will be a darker purple, not so reddish as moonglow.

Although it's disappointing that these Shadow Purple/Moonglow dupes (and the originals) are fugitive, I continue to find them irresistible and want to collect them. Daniel Smith claims their mixes were made by accident, but regardless of whether this is true, the other paint manufacturers should have taken lightfastness into account when formulating their dupes.
